In recent years, progress in eradicating Malaria has made a considerable setback. The disease continues to directly endanger human health and cost lives, not only in the most vulnerable areas, but also in countries with adequate resources.

World Malaria Day serves as a reminder of the importance of Malaria prevention and control efforts, particularly for those living in the underdeveloped areas. The day also emphasizes the need for sustained political support and resources for Malaria control and eradication efforts.

FACTS ABOUT MALARIA

Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by plasmodium parasite that commonly infects a female anopheles mosquito which feeds on humans.

People who get Malaria are typically very sick with symptoms like high fevers, shaking chills, and flu-like illness.
This usually appear within 10-15 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Some types of malaria can cause severe illness and death.

Severe symptoms include: extreme tiredness and fatigue, impaired consciousness, multiple convulsions, difficulty breathing, dark or bloody urine, jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin) and abnormal bleeding.

Although Malaria can be a deadly disease, illness and death from Malaria can usually be prevented.

RISK GROUPS
The risk of severe infection is higher in the following groups of people: Babies, children younger than 5 years, pregnant women, travelers, and people with HIV or AIDS.

MALARIA PREVENTION
Malaria can be prevented by avoiding mosquito bites or taking medication.

1. Vector control:
WHO currently recommends either the use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) or indoor residual spraying (IRS) for malaria control in most malaria-prone areas.

2. Prophylaxis:
Travelers to malaria endemic areas should consult their physician several weeks before departure. The physician will determine which medications are appropriate for the destination country. In some cases, medication must be started 2-3 weeks before departure.

3. Preventive chemotherapies:
Is the use of drugs, either alone or in combination, to prevent malaria infection and its consequences. It requires the administration of a full course of an antimalarial drug to vulnerable populations at specific times during the period of greatest malaria risk, regardless of whether the recipient is infected with malaria.

4. Vaccine:
Beginning in October 2021, WHO recommends widespread use of the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine in children living in regions with moderate to high P. falciparum malaria transmission. The vaccine has been shown to significantly reduce malaria and fatal severe malaria in young children.

Today is World Malaria Day. Let's join to eliminate malaria in Africa.

Malaria is an African sickness since over 94% of it occurs in the continent. Those having malaria in other continents probably could be migrants from Africa if they check it well.

Such a mystery that covid came and the vaccine came out within 3 months but here we are still commercialising malaria to make money.

If Malaria was worldwide and a threat to world presidents, the vaccine would have been released 100 years ago.

And, Yes, Africa needs to wake up because it seems like it is on us to make the vaccine if not, we will continue to be a global market for indians and other drug manufacturers.

Truth is in Africa we re less concerned about health and research, if a whooping 94% case is peculiar to Africa tell me why our research facilities shouldn't have sprung up to action to look for vaccines, or improved Chemoprophylaxis, yet we still rely on antimalaria drugs produced in India and the likes. The black man have to brace up

That says alot about how dependant Africa is on the west. Why can't Africa develop it or rid themselves of mosquitos themselves?? Even treatment for malaria was developed and patented by the west and years later Africa still depends on those treatment

This disease is still as deadly as ever...

Let's take it serious ..

So much more needed to be done..

Stay aware..

Keep your environment clean and get rid of breeding spots.

Stop self diagnosis..

Stop self medication..

Visit a certified health care centres if you have symptoms.

Enrol yourself and family on Health Insurance to cater for cost of medication and treatment.

Now this is much better.
But then Embracing diversity and having dialogue would not solve our problems. We have been doing this since 1960.
But the other points you made are not so bad.

You make a valid point. While embracing diversity and engaging in dialogue are important steps, they alone may not solve all of Nigeria's challenges. It's essential to complement these efforts with concrete actions such as supporting local businesses, advocating for good governance, and fostering a culture of unity. These actions can contribute to tangible progress and address systemic issues that have persisted over the years.

No doubt ..... why can't we make our own?... can't our universities and research centres find a way? The bushmen be living in the jungle for centuries .... in the midst of the malaria mosquitos ... without vaccines ... doesn't it mean they know something? ... why don't we look to them instead of looking for pharmaceuticals? We are willing to spend billions on imported vaccines .... vaccines we should stay clear of since we know of the population reduction agenda and do not know the contents and long term effects of the vaccines... we cannot trust the manufacturers. It is time we take care of our own peoblems.
