Beside that credit life is a terrible life , it racks up debts and it is depressing ! You can't say the car you bought on credit card is yours till you finish paying unless repos will show up and trust me low rung jobs in USA aren't the best and they live in some funny neighborhood |

Love800: Not for the standard of living in those countries… the pays are just enough to get by if you’re doing full time, and pointless as a side job if you’re on a another full time job! |

olawonder: Not true, you're absolutely WRONG....I'm writing of the USA in particular. There's lots of ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS doing these jobs and since some people think SELF EMPLOYMENT is the only way to prosperity, well most of them are self employed....because they don't have work permits. They're doing better than "get by" please. Again, I know MANY Nigerian adult men with families who've NEVER done anything else but drive taxis or work as car mechanics. They live in neighborhoods that are as good as any GRA or even Lekki in Nigeria. These are people I've known all my adult life, I saw them get married, I baby sat their children, many of those children are now doctors, pharmacists, plumber, coaches, accountants. The best known TAILOR here is a Ghanian. He started his business in his house, now he has a regular shop. As far as I know, that's all he does for a living and he lives OK as far as I can tell. Some Nigerians have done so well as ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS with these "low jobs" that they even established businesses and have become employers. Yes, that is true. There's one fellow that built a huge business and only got his Green Card maybe 3 years ago, after over 25 years in the USA. I have no reason to lie. Any Nigerian who has lived in the USA can tell you this. There's a town near me here where a Liberian became the Town Manager, the town is Zebulon, North Carolina, he started as a maintenance man. Town manager in the USA is equivalent to Head of Service for a town. Somehow after some years it became public knowledge that he was an ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT. Same thing happened with a full Professor of Mathematics at a government owned University here. Students and in fact the whole academic community supported him and he got to stay. This was over 20 years ago but we're talking about "low jobs" so that's just as an aside. Right now in the USA is a good time for skilled or semi-skilled trades. I'm sure it's the same in any other Anglo-Western country. Good Luck to Nigerians. |

Gerrard59: US consumers are struggling with soaring credit card debt and rising interest rates. Experts said the debt increase is the most concerning for younger adults. Buy now, pay later programs could mean the problem is even worse than it appears According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, total household debt in the US has risen more than 24% since before the pandemic in 2019 and now sits at $17.5 trillion. Of that total debt, credit card balances are growing the fastest. Americans owe a record-high $1.13 trillion on their credit cards. That total increased by 4.6% in the third quarter of 2023 — the ninth straight quarter with a rise — even before the holidays, and faster than the overall debt growth rate of 1.2% in that period. Fact is, debt stress syndrome is linked to a number of mental health issues, including a massive increase in denial, anger, depression, and anxiety. |

ariesbull: Bros, the US economy is a beast. Even top EU chief executives acknowledge it (https://www.ft.com/content/58fe78bb-1077-4d32-b048-7d69f9d18809). Chinese companies are going through the corners to be able to sell to Americans. South Korean companies are building factories to serve American customers. Japanese companies are investing billions, and even a senior politician visited Trump to ensure both sides of the political divide are satisfied. Bros, forget anything you hear about the US' economy doing kini kon kini kon. It is a beast. 2 Likes |

Gerrard59:nobody is saying that USA economy isn't the beast what I am saying is that debt is dealing with majority of citizens from student debts to credit card debts to insurance to mortgage ect...this is depressing and we all know debt is depressing As of the third quarter of 2022, the average American held $101,915 in debt, according to Experian. Keep in mind that while this number might seem staggering, it's an average — some consumers carry more or less than this amount of debt There's a strong link between debt and poor mental health. People with debt are more likely to face common mental health issues, such as prolonged stress, depression, and anxiety. Debt can affect your physical well-being, too. The most common debt by total amount of debt in the U.S. is mortgage debt. 2 Other types of common debt include credit card debt, auto loans, and student loans. The average American owed $103,358 in consumer debt in the second quarter of 2023, the latest data available, according to credit bureau Experian.... This means an average American will be in debt till he dies! Cos it is hard to pay off the over 100k in debts when many don't even have upto 2k savings .... Now is this life ? I prefer a debt free life ! Even if I will be in debt let it be business related like buying office equipment or doing import/export or business expansion...not using credit card to buy phones, cars or mortgage or some even boxers and buy beer. |

Okay. But some guys on the thread are countering what you just said. So which countries will this be productive and why is it not productive in UK and canada? olawonder: |
Re: Japa: Top 5 Lucrative Side Hustles For Nigerians To Survive In UK, Canada by olawonder(m): 7:51pm On Apr 25 |
Love800:I’ve lived in both countries and I can tell you that the pay package for any of these jobs is not as much as they’re being overhyped on the internet! And trust me you can’t do any of these jobs as a side hustle cos there’s either not enough demand, like in the case of a phone repairer (cos gadgets don’t get damaged as much for obodo oyinbo as such), or too physically and mentally demanding like in the case of a caregiver! When you’re able to do any of the jobs you simply just do it as a regular job, nothing over-earning as they make them seem! |

olawonder: My reply stated.... IbeOkehie: As I've said it many times, all the Anglo nations...UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand and Canada...are the same. I know plenty of Nigerians in Canada. When President Donald Trump was chasing illegal immigrants many Nigerians ran to Canada. I used to work for a Canadian company and got to know many Canadians. Canada is USA in a cold pack. Thanks. Good Luck to Nigerians. |

Gerrard59: True but we have some serious issues at our own level here. I believe you know that. You're someone worth discussing it with for the chops. What's going to be the outcome of all the deficits and debt being piled up by the USA? The USA is in exactly the same FISCAL condition as Nigeria but at a higher level. It's the difference between Dangote saying he owes too much and a roadside vulcanizer complaining about the cost of garri. Things can go awry quicker than we think. Go back into Nairaland and see how the latrine rats of urban Nigeria were VERY HAPPY during the Great Financial Crisis that hit the USA in 2007. It could happen again. The basic framework of free markets and property rights will likely ensure a recovery but best to get ready for the storms. Good Luck to USA. |
Re: Japa: Top 5 Lucrative Side Hustles For Nigerians To Survive In UK, Canada by olawonder(m): 9:35pm On Apr 25 |
IbeOkehie: Wrong! The gap between the various legislation for working in these fields in these countries are far and wide! Caregivers in the UK for example are mostly employed by the NHS-related companies, if not directly with the NHS. They’re mostly paid from allocation grants from the government, which put a kind of limit on the earnings… most wages are in line with most regular jobs, even lower up North! In Canada, each fields are often dominated by certain countries folks, which means simply getting up and decide you wanna go work in that field can be a mirage. But then again, the wages are not all that imo! Many in these jobs end up being workaholic with no social life and despair sets in in no time… they too still hv to rely heavily on credits lifestyle to keep up. |
Re: Japa: Top 5 Lucrative Side Hustles For Nigerians To Survive In UK, Canada by IbeOkehie: 10:13pm On Apr 25 |
olawonder: OK...how many people STAY in these jobs for the long term? It's best not to adopt a static outlook BUT when discussing these "Nigeria better than Abroad" themes I try to adopt the lowest possible outcome just to be fair I know several Nigerians who migrated from the USA to Canada. Some of them did these lowly jobs and now a decade later most have moved up the income and skills ladder. Similar to the USA. Even those that stay at that level earn good enough wages to live at the world middle-class standard. I maintain that ALL the Anglo-Saxon nations have basically the same socio-economic setup driven by the same culture on any continent. Good Luck to Nigeria. |

IbeOkehie: Two fellas here have mentioned war. The US would instigate a global war so that those debts would be wiped away. On Twitter, I read that folks accused the US of trying to dodge paying up its debts with the purported plan of sanctioning Chinese banks because they trade with Russian firms using the dollar. Well, if/when the US is in disarray, it would be internal. Too many competing groups with diverse interests. Diversity is not good on a wider scale. I am surprised many people are yet to realise this. As for urbane Nigerians mocking the US, that is expected especially seeingthe wealth and development divide. You have mentioned how many Nigerians in Nigeria do envy those in the diaspora. So, an economic meltdown would have them ecstatic. We see it with issues in the UK when discussed on the front page. Generally, in life, successful people are envied by all and sundry. It behoves those successful people to mind how they navigate the world because there are many praying/wishing/hoping for their downfall. It is a global phenomena. 2 Likes |
