The naira, Nigeria‘s currency, has continued to fall across official and unofficial foreign exchange (FX) as speculators scoop dollars amid increased supply.

The local currency opened trading on Friday morning with the dollar selling at N1,430 on the parallel market, popularly called black market. This represents 2.09 percent depreciation against N1,400 quoted on Thursday on the black market. “Dollar is scarce, very scarce in the market,” one currency trader told BusinessDay on Friday.

At the official FX market, known as the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM), the naira closed flat as the dollar was quoted at N1,309.88 on Friday, weaker than N1,308.52 closed on Thursday, according to the data from the FMDQ Securities Exchange.

Dollar supplied by willing buyers and willing sellers increased by 61.02 percent to $318.08 million on Thursday from $197.54 million recorded on Wednesday at NAFEM.

The intraday high closed at N1,435 per dollar, weaker than N1,367 closed on Wednesday. Similarly, the intraday low depreciated to N1,100 on Thursday as against N1,098/$1 closed on Wednesday at NAFEM. Last week, Olayemi Cardoso, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, reflected on the significant challenges encountered during his first six months of assuming office.

He highlighted grappling with inflation and addressing volatility in the foreign exchange market as major hurdles. Cardoso expressed optimism, stating that relative stability has now been achieved, particularly in the FX market, marking a transition from firefighting to strategic planning across key areas.

“We have transitioned from firefighting to strategic planning across key areas,” Cardoso remarked. “This includes improving the ease of doing business in Nigeria and consolidating gains through an efficient and transparent market system.”

Cardoso emphasized the importance of boosting financial and economic inclusion for small businesses and households, exploring smarter use of technology and remote banking to reduce transaction costs and expand accessibility to the financial system.

Highlighting recent developments, Cardoso noted that April witnessed the naira emerging as the best-performing currency globally, buoyed by bullish sentiment from leading international investment institutions. He pointed out robust activities in the FX market, with turnover reaching levels not seen in over seven years, instilling confidence among investors, businesses, and other partners.

Despite the positive trends, Cardoso remained vigilant, acknowledging persistent challenges such as elevated inflation driven by rising food prices, transportation costs, and energy expenses. However, he expressed confidence that inflation, though rising, is doing so at a decelerated rate and will soon begin on a downward trend.

“We remain vigilant in addressing challenges such as elevated inflation,” Cardoso affirmed. “We are confident that with strategic planning and continued efforts, we will overcome these hurdles and sustain economic stability.”

Naira slumps seventh times against Dollar in days at Foreign Market
The Naira has slumped seven times in recent days against the US dollar at the foreign exchange. FMDQ data showed that the Naira recorded a seventh drop against the Dollar, quoting N1309.88 per Dollar on Thursday from N1308.52 on Wednesday. This represents a N1.36 loss on a day-to-day basis.

At the parallel market section, the Naira dropped between N1,300 and N1,370 on Thursday from between N1,250 and 1,300 the previous day. In the last four days, Naira has recorded depreciation against the Dollar in the FX market.

Last week, the Naira dropped three times against the Dollar in the foreign exchange market. Accordingly, the Naira had lost N237.14 since April 17, 2024 when it traded at N1,072.74 per Dollar at the FX market.

The development comes despite the Central Bank of Nigeria releasing 10,000 dollars each to BDC at N1,021 to a dollar with a caveat to sell at most 1.5 per cent above the bought price.

This is the third recent intervention for BDCs amid the bank’s effort to defend the Naira. BDC operators blamed peer-to-peer cryptocurrency platforms like Binance for the recent depreciation of the Naira against the dollar in the foreign exchange market.

Meanwhile, do you agree? Can you stake your dollar or investment into the hands of those who have no accountability and unbridled penchant for institutional corruption?

If you want naira to grow in Nigeria, ban all Nigeria-based businesses from asking for payments in USD. If they won't accept naira from Nigerians, pack up and leave.

Then, criminalise and punish those seen with foreign currency in this country. People who are paid in foreign currency can sell their USD as digital currency and not carry the physical cash.

Unfortunately, this cannot happen here because politicians and their friends are the first set of culprits. When you see the government folks chasing Binance and AbokiFX up and down, they are just looking for ways to distract Nigerians - they know this.

The pattern with which naira was gaining recently looked suspicious and appeared fake. There was no significant policy shift that necessitated the rise of naira so it was just a matter of time before it goes back to it's real value. That notwithstanding, don't rely on this momentary fall to make your speculations. I heard many people are paying their school fees abroad this period thus driving the demand for foreign currency ...

Under tulumbu's government the exchange rate is making the headlines day in day out. When will agriculture, massive production of goods for export make the headlines. I thought tinubu grew the GDP of Lagos to trillions of naira. Seems he has lost his old tricks

This Naira sef.. when it wants to fall, it can lose N300 in 2 days.. but if it is to gain, it would gain N5 in one month.. na wa 🤔

I remember shouting my lungs out that these thing should not be left to CBN alone.. the fiscal people should come hard with their own policies too to help the Naira..

they should be seen engaging in productive activities, supporting the private sectors and industries, MSMEs, discouraging oil theft, drive up ease-of-doing business, know what is happening in the mining sector, revamp the steel sector...

these are the real sectors that would drive up growth and contribute to GDP.. but no, everyone is just busy doing nothing, waiting for oil money..
