NERC Deregulates Meters Prices May 1 by Godszilla: 4:15am On Apr 30
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on Monday released an order on the Deregulation of Meter Prices for meters deployed under the Meter Asset Provider Scheme.

It said the prices of meters were deregulated after Meter Asset Providers and other operators requested a further review of meter prices in consideration of the significant changes in foreign exchange and inflation rates since the last price review of the prices of meters by NERC in September 2023.

It said the significant changes in these macroeconomic variables had constrained the abilities of meter providers to supply meters at the approved regulated price.

“The commission has noted the need for the efficient pricing of meters to respond more quickly to changes tongue in macroeconomic parameters, particularly exchange rates.

“The commission has further taken cognisance of the constraints/challenges faced by MAPs and LMMAs and therefore approved the deregulation of prices of meters deployed under the MAP scheme with effect from May 1, 2024,” NERC stated.

It added, “With effect from May 1, 2024, all prices of meters under the MAP scheme shall be determined through a competitive bidding process with customers provided with a choice of authorised vendors.”

It said the combined effects of sections of the regulations on the regulated pricing of meters deployed under the MAP scheme was hereby derogated.(otilo - its gone)

“The cost of prices of meters deployed under the MAP scheme is hereby deregulated to enable end-use customers acquire meters from MAPs of their choice based on competitive open market prices wink determined from transparent bidding frameworks,” the commission stated.

It said, “All MAP permits holders are henceforth eligible to provide services and transact for the provision of meters and metering services with any Disco in the Federal Republic of Nigeria with their existing permit.
.

“The lifting of the restriction on permitting to operate in all Discos is subject to the mandatory requirement for MAPs to comply with the associated Disco specific requirements/specifications.

“All Discos shall ensure the effective and seamless integration of smart meters deployed by MAPs with the Disco’s head-end systems and meter data management systems.” - the gift that keeps on giving"

A joke, they are bringing new things every time but nothing to truly improve the power supply
Electricity has greatly improved. The major current problem now is pricing. The subsidy keeps mounting and FG knows it's not sustainable to keep the subsidies. If people price electricity well and pay for it they will demand for the best service but if FG keeps subsidising it there will be too much wastages and inefficiency like predominates before now.

May God bless Nigeria for ever! Check my signature for free stuffs!

Consumer should not be paying for meter, it is the responsibility of the Disco to install it for end user. That was the arrangement when they were privatized.

Whose property is the meter, the end user or Disco?

If at all consumers are compelled to pay, it should be a subsidized price.

I thought the agreement during the privatisation was that Discos will install meters free to customers?

In a situation the customers pay for the meter, whose property will the meter be? Why can't a tenant buy meter in the house he lives, and when he moves away, he moves with his meter?

Government propaganda agent.

Where and where has electricity improved when your inept government has not been able to generate more than 6000MW of electricity since 1960 and dilapidated poles, wires, transformers and other distribution facilities still litter everywhere?

I don't know how simple things in other countries of the world suddenly becomes rocket science in Nigeria.
Electricity that even war torn countries are providing uninterrupted to its citizens, Nigeria even in the best of times is still groping in the dark because of incompetence, tribalism, corruption, extreme greed, useless politicians, weak laws etc...
In short i am tired.

It was totally free before but all of a sudden they started charging way too much maybe when they realised the households to be metred are just too much for them to bear..

The Disco's still retain the ownership of the metres even if you buy it for a million naira just like that if the transformers too.

It is not just about deregulation.

Remove the bottlenecks associated with it.

Stop the electricity union from extorting people.

Imagine you want to pay for metre, they will first say union has to assess the wiring in your house. These are people that look like criminals on a good day.

Then the idiots would now give their own bill and if you refuse to pay that, the DISCo would not sell metre to you.

Government needs to understand that you must first clear the fraud in the system for something to work right.

It is not just waking up one morning and removing 'subsidies'...

Meter is free.
The cost lies on the heads of the DISCOs.
If a consumer pays for meter, he/she is entitled to refund via credit tokens.
