Organized Labour, consisting of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, has outlined details of its proposed N615,000 minimum wage.

The details were contained in a statement released by the NLC on Friday.

According to the statement, Food and Transportation took the larger proportion of the proposed minimum wage.

The breakdown showed that N270,000 (for thirty days) was benchmarked for Food and N110,000 for Transportation.

Others are Electricity/Power (N20,000), Accommodation (N40,000), Utility Water (N10,000), Kerosene/Gas (N35,000), Clothing (N20,000), Education (N50,000), Sanitation (N10,000) and Medicals (50,000) resulting to a total sum of N615,000.

Recall that Festus Osifo, President of TUC and Joe Ajaero, the President of NLC, in separate statements, had revealed the N615,000 minimum wage proposal.

Meanwhile, in his May Day message to workers, President Bola Tinubu said an upward review of the minimum wage is imminent.

The development comes as Nigerian workers grapple with high cost of living resulting from rising inflation, which stood at 33.20 per cent in March 2024.

I am sure these guys are not really serious with this thing they are doing. Increments in salary will only invite inflation. For me, I think what the workers should fight for is the naira purchasing power. If my salary is 20k, I should be able to purchase good things with it. For example, with 20k salary:
Bag of rice.... #950
House rent (annually)... #230
Sch fees (private sch)... #110 (very expensive)
Car (moderate).... #6500 cheesy grin
Buy a house... #4250 etc
Oya wake me up!!

We are just pursuing shadows.

Higher Minimum wage will only lead to higher inflation.
Very soon ₦50 & ₦100 notes will join ₦5, ₦10 & ₦20 in becoming worthless.

It's only Good & Effective Governance + Increased Productivity that will boost workers' purchasing power, not wage increments.

will your suggestion be done over night or even in one year? . So workers will keep perishing till they land on a solution after these trial and error policies?

Prices of everything have increased by more than 200% and the salaries remain the same. If you were a civil servant, you would not have made this suggestion.

Anyhow e go be make e be. Make them increase the minimum wage.

I've been a civil servant since February 2016 sir. This is what I always tell them at the office anytime a conversation like this pops up. Since the introduction of that wage award, a lot of them are beginning to think along my line.

I think 615,000 is a tad much. It should be somewhere around 80k but most importantly, what the NLC should be fighting for is price control so that even 80k will have so much value.
And that's why I think investors love Nigeria, because we open our market to all sorts of foreigners and they set outrageous prices for goods because we don't have price control. Even our very own Dangote that we gave license to use our natural resources, we can't afford the things he created with our resources!

you are correct, what matters is the purchasing power. of what use will minimum wage of N615k be to you if bag of rice becomes N500k and children school fees N1m per child in a term?

If you want to purchase anything as small as 10 usd online? It means 1/3 of your monthly salary is gone. Just for 10usd that someone earns in half an hour in the United states
Will the remaining 20k be sufficient for you for the rest of the month?
What if you’re buying something of 50usd?
Is that what you want?

Inflation has always been around, forget about it
We need to be able to purchase goods in the international market without breaking the bank!

Unserious labour leaders, they don't know the enormity of task at hand hence throwing up figure recklessly oblivious of other factors as government earnings and amount that should be for capital project from earnings.
All earnings cannot be for recurrent.
N80,000 is realistic and OK.
Someone that has been surviving on N35k will.survive on N80k

I agree with you but I ask you a simple question. Do these guys look like people that are interested in strengthening the naira when they travel out just to discuss matters that could have been done here. They purchase jeeps at 160m each for themselves allocate to themselves all sorts of allowances and use the dollars to bribe each other during elections and then expect workers to depend on them to strengthen the purchasing power of the naira. You are on a long tiin.

Labour know they will not get that 615k they are asking for but the 615k breakdown highlights the reality and it's a good place to negotiate and get a good minimum wage for the workers because these guys don't send you a civil servant and they also no send consequences of their frivolities. It doesn't matter to them so why should it matter to labour.

They will continue to spend as they like and make you a civil servant be expectant for better life till you retire.

Why is nobody talking about the fact that the naira was devalued, but always rush to say new minimum wage will cause inflation, I guess through the years of inflation, minimum wage was increased yearly thereby causing the galloping inflation we are facing..

Workers should earn a living wage. Politicians should cut down on their pay and allowances and cut down the cost of governance. Corruption should be brought down to the minimum and see how the country gets better.

Then be ready to buy a bag of rice for 500k,cement 50k,fuel 5k/litre and the shortest transport from CMS to Ajah 5k.
2BR in Ajah 5m and in Lekki 8-10m/annum.
1room self con in Banana Island 5m.
Ikorodu 2-3m for 3BR
3 Families of 4 each would be sharing 3 BR flat or 2BR flat.
