If you want to leave NG finally, just do so at once.
Living with your aunt for 5 months and to return to NG is just a lot of strain on her and a lot of money you want to spend - return ticket and other costs. I must let you know the US is an 'individualistic' society, people dont cater for others easily or freely. After a while your relationship with your aunt (her husband, kids) will become fraught. 5 months is a long time. She may be willing to do so for you for a month, or 2 months or even 3 months, pending when you start playing your part. I am not sure you'd get a whole room to yourself. You can't bunk in someone living room for 5 months or even share room for 5 months with your 'cousins' before stories that touch begins.
Back to my question of what you want to do for the 5 months while in the US, waiting on your response.
Also, if you are away for 5 months, what happens to the things you are currently doing in NG (work, business or school)?

I work online
For the 5 months maybe I will work on finding better foot in the US or just being there so as to increase my travel history

My main plan is to run a Canadian school visa which my admission term plan is January 2025. And I'm still in the application stage for now

What if I stay like 3 months?
Shorter time you stay the less likely they will scrutinize you when you return

Or you don't return to Nigeria

These are choices you make

You can't increase your travel history while "being in the US".
Focus your attention fully to the Canada School and maybe look for a US School also.
The cost and time and money and everything in between you will use to get a visit visa to the US and stay 5 mths there and return to NG and jet out again is more than enough to just fix your Student Plans twice over.
You still need to apply for the visit visa and interview dates are way past your stated Canada School timeline.

I had applied for IW for my dad -- but instead he got his passport back with form 221g. No reason was indicated on the form itself.

I booked his interview appointment which happened Wednesday. I had suspected he was summoned to appear in-person because he had stayed in the U.S for 22 weeks on his last visit. And sure enough, during the interview, he was asked to explain the extended stay. He was there for medicals and it took weeks to run diagnostics and tests -- not to mention, another couple of months to get an appointment for surgery. Of course he was asked to provide documents to support the claims: luckily he brought his medical receipt, showing payment (with zero balance) along with dated transcripts of his hospital visits. This is important.

He was asked a few more questions: like purpose of trip this time, how long he intends to stay, etc. Visa was approved and the process lasted 10 minutes.

Anyway, I haven't been on this forum in a couple of years but just wanted to share the experience in case it might help someone in a similar situation. I just wish they would make the 221g a bit clearer so the candidate can come prepared. I had only second-guessed and fortunately he brought the documents; otherwise, this could have gone either way.

One other thing that stood out to me: he mentioned that the process has changed a bit from the last time he visited the embassy back in 2019. He said, they now scrutinize applicants and some are sent away without an interview during the pre-screening process prior to being allowed in. I thought that was wild considering the time and cost involved in applying only to be told one doesn't qualify for interview.

Thank you for sharing your Dad's experience. I'm sure it will help some people. Most applicants turned back don't have passport pictures that meet the requirement. They are usually asked to go and take another passport picture. One or two other things might be wrong with their application. They don't turn back people without reason. I was in the embassy earlier in the year and that was my observation.

Hi.

I filled my USA visa DS-160 form February 2023 and was given an appointment date for much later in August 2024.

I’m fine with waiting for the appointment date. But my question now is that some things have changed since I filled the form. Good changes though. I work for a different company now. I earn much more than I did then. My travel history has expanded by about 8 more countries since then.

What do I do? Do I need to fill another DS-160 or can I use the old one and explain to the interviewer? Please let me know.

I’m also looking for link to group that gives date updates so I can try and get an earlier date. Thank you so much!!

Hey 🀠

**Yes. If you have 5 years visa today and you travelled to the USA and stayed let's say 1 month and return back to Nigeria. You won't need to go back to the USA embassy again let's say next year 2025 if you want to attend a wedding in the USA. All you have to do is pick up your passport and buy flight ticket. The 5 years you got in 2024 will last you till 2029.

1. Focus on securing your B1/B2 visa first. When you are able to secure your visa , the United States embassy will issue 5-yrs tourist/visiting visa to you .

2. Effective from last year (2023), people
holding business and tourist visas (B1/B2) can now apply for new jobs in the USA. Ipso facto, with your B1/B2 visa you can appear for job interviews for prospective employment .

3. However, the USA Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) stipulated that your employer (s) must change your B1/B2 visa status before you resume the job.

4. If you go for 1 week conference and after the conference you find a vacancy you can go and apply with your B1/B2 and if they gave you the job your employer will work out how to change your B1/B2 to a relevant work visa and there you go, you can then start your job without coming back to Nigeria.

5. Focus on securing your B1/B2 visa first and attend your conference. ** However, if you cannot find employment on time do not stay longer than 6 weeks if you enter the USA on business purpose. You can always return back to the USA as many time as you want within those 5 years .

Hey 🀠

1. On the day of your visa interview , the consular officer would stand in front of you and be typing on a computer while asking you questions , the page he opened on that computer is your DS -160.

2. Therefore , you should not have more than 10 munites to defend yourself verbally why you think you qualify for the visa . The helper that will do the remaining talking for you is what the consular is reading on your DS-160 page.

3. Go and fill another DS-160 and input the necessary changes in your overall profiles and discard the old one. Besides , you don't start talking stories that the consular did not ask you to analyse.

4. For the group , look out for the group that is authorised by the admin of Nairaland . Don't join any external group.

Quick question - @OyoTunjiUSA - When changes are made on DS160, thereby filling another DS160 and discarding the old one, does this have an effect on the B1/B2 interview date booked?

1. No. It does not affect your interview date. Changing DS-160 just means that you are transmitting new information (s) about you to the USA embassy ahead of your interview.

Hey 🀠

.A2A.

1. After filling your DS-160, login to your caec (cgi portal) site and click on update profile . It will bring out your data page and look out where your old DS-160 is written and clears it off (write your new DS-160 number in the space) then stroll down towards the right hand and click save .

2. After 2/3 days , log back to your caec sight and click on Appointment (it will take you to email or download appointment) and print it out . ** The new printed appointment will automatically reflects your new DS-160 confirmation number . Thereby , your visa appointment letter is now match with your DS-160 as required by the embassy .

3. For the visa (MRV) payment receipt, you did not pay it with your DS-160 but you paid it physically or online with your Travel Passport information. Therefore, leave the MRV alone and take it along with the 2 documents (ds 160 and visa appointment) above.

4. If however, you have paid the visa fee (MRV) with your old travel passport number , all you have to do is to take both (new & old) passports to the embassy on the day of your interview . Even, if you did not see the old passport , your new passport still carries the old passport number as a bona-fide successor of your old passport , therefore , it will still be accepted to continue your visa application journey.

The little idea i have about this is that there is a "90 day rule". You are not to contact your school within the first 3 months of visit to the USA of your intention to study otherwise USCIS will take it that you had a pre-conceived intent of going to the USA to study and not for visit. After your 90 days stay, you can reach out to your school of interest of your intention to change your status to F1 and apply to the school.

An officer in the school should be able to guide you on the required forms to fill, payment to be made and necessary support documents to file your case with USCIS. The implication is that once you file your case with USCIS, you are not to leave the USA until a decision is made. You are also not allowed to resume studies or work, you will just have to wait.

Decision from USCIS is what no one has control over. It can come in 3months and could take as much as 6 to 12 months. The process requires a lot of patience and you can research more about it on YouTube so you are well aware of the facts before embarking on it.

Let me allow the gurus with more experience about this to give their input.

I appreciate your response Olasubomy thank you.

Oh now that you explained it to me, I now understand that the 90day rule is for visitors. Before changing of status.

I didnt use a visa entering usa though, but i am thinking of getting one, lets say for study, so I am asking if that interview will be easier for someone that has visited usa before. lol

I would like to take a IT course in English. My q is, if I can get a 8-1yr course I can try visa you know for study/go for a training course.

I need a school that offers that kinda course I have searched search they only offer online IT courses. I want the Onsite lol

Hey 🀠

1. In specific term, B2 is what you are going to choose (online or when paying for visa fee).

2. A foreign national traveling to the United States for tourism needs a visitor visa (B-2). Tourism is a short visit for vacation, for visiting family and friends, OR for medical treatment (B-2) as stated by @Candybright.

3. B-1 is for business (conference, etc). But USA embassy most of the time usually issue the 2 categories together in order for the beneficiary to juggle between according to purpose of travel.
