Was 2nd Niger Bridge A 'Wasted Venture' Since You Already Had 1st Niger Bridge? by Tellmeastory: 9:38pm On May 06 |
Was 2nd Niger Bridge A ''Wasted Venture'' Since You Already Had The 1st Niger Bridge? I don't recall any complaints about the multi-billion dollar state-of-the-art 2nd Niger Bridge being ''a waste of resources since we already have the 1st Niger Bridge, and there are numerous bad roads in the country that need fixing''. Or is it one rule for a section of the country and another rule for others? 2nd Niger Bridge (and 1st Niger Bridge to the left) 1st Niger Bridge 2 Likes 1 Share |

samwash: Start a new thread for that. We're discussing Onitsha here. Is it One rule for ONITSHA and another rule for coastal Nigerians like Calabar people and others? Did you see that first picture? Two expensive multi-billion dollar deepwater bridges sitting right next to each other. You can even walk from one bridge to the other in a few minutes! How is that fair when we have so many roads in the country that need fixing? 10 Likes 1 Share |

Betanaija42moro: But things were terrible when the 2nd Niger Bridge was being built. Or was it not the same Buhari era when you people claimed Nigeria was the 'world poverty capital' and a failed zoo? When Boko Haram owned territories across northern states? With herdsmen, banditry and kidnapping MORE rampant than today? When IPOB gangs were shooting Igbos for not sitting at home? And bad roads everywhere? Why did NOT ONE of you stand up and say ''this 2nd Niger Bridge costing billions of dollars is a misplaced priority, since we already have the 1st Niger Bridge, and have so many other challenges facing the country''? 22 Likes 3 Shares |

Tellmeastory:This is common sense; if the 1st niger bridge was dilapidated and barely motorable, and there is acute shortage of funds, the sensible thing to do with the limited funds will be to fix the existing bridge before embarking on a new one. 5 Likes |

Tellmeastory: One is sinking, therefore a disaster waiting to happen. And the other is a timely replacement. Now tell us, what's the compelling argument for a coastal superhighway in a country that is, for all intent and purpose, broke?. Why was due process side stepped, why did this government change the initial financing arrangement, and why was the tender awarded to Tinubu's friend?. 2 Likes |

It was not, but the toll gate there is a waste of time, when u know only celebration time u get the traffic u need and make toll money, For me Buhari tried on it but it was political, knowing how they budgeted every year for it, it was used to enriched themself |

The second Niger bridge was a good development but it was also another propaganda that have been awarded and reawarded multiple times by the Buhari govt. The bridge was also another avenue for corruption because most of the roads in the SE were unmotorable but the then govt choose it for propaganda sake. 1 Like 1 Share |

Cindypresh: “Vehicles plying the coastal road are expected to pay a whopping N3,000 per toll gate, per trip'', according to news reports. And the difference is that, UNLIKE THE USELESS 2ND NIGER BRIDGE, many people WILL USE the coastal highway, so it will pay for itself many times over, and fund its own maintenance. But Nigerian taxpayers have to COUGH OUT MONEY to pay for the 2nd Niger Bridge! So the 2nd Niger Bridge is far more of a waste of resources than the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway. 2 Likes |

obailala: True, but the bridge is not even dilapidated! There is nothing wrong with the bridge. Someone there just decided a new bridge was what they wanted in the East, and they pressured the FG to build it! Cost? $2 billion! 4 Likes |

Re: Was 2nd Niger Bridge A 'Wasted Venture' Since You Already Had 1st Niger Bridge? by obailala(m): 12:26am On May 07 |
Tellmeastory:That is exactly my point! There was nothing wrong with the 1st bridge besides that the perennial traffic on it was extreme and unbearable. So it only made sense for the commuters to yearn for a new bridge to ease the pain. However, IF the 1st bridge was dilapidated or unmotorable, and the govt claims it didnt have the funds to patch the already existing bridge, then what sense would it have made to initiate a brand new bridge under such circumstances? Another point about the niger bridge was its cost. A simple bridge of less than 2km over a single river was definitely a practical and achievable project. But is the 700km coastal road a practical and achievable project given the financial situation of the country? The existing roads which run through all coastal states, (i.e. the Lagos-Sagamu-Ore-Benin-Sapele-Warri and the east west road up to Calabar) are all in bad shape and I'm sure 1trillion would completely fix these roads. In the last 20 years, the FG hasnt been able to complete these roads due to fund shortages, but somehow someone thinks its a wise decision to start constructing a brand new parallel road which will costs over N15trillion? Where will the money come from? Must we play blind follow-follow politics with everything? 4 Likes |

NaijaCowFarm: Tellmeastory:@Tellmeastory, Do you know what a coastal road through the Niger delta swamps would entail?.... That road would have over 100 bridges, most of which would be longer than the 2nd niger bridge. Infact almost half of that 700km would literally be bridges, yet you call that a "regular road"? You really think that's a realistic and practical project right? 2 Likes |

The road leads through and opens up the NIGER DELTA to business and tourism. The same NIGER DELTA that is FEEDING ALL OF YOU. Y'all need to STFU. Seriously. 3 Likes |

Don't mind the perpetual Southern saboteurs.. they can't grow above petty politics. We can understand Atiku not being happy with the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project because he is from North, what made the other olodo cum bad market turn opposition of a project that will benefit the South remains a mystery. The freedom South South people are enjoying currently in Nigeria is really causing some people serious pain.. as if they (SSners) should still be under them in a master-slave arrangement. 3 Likes |
