Trump's strategy goes beyond boosting enthusiasm, he and right wing media are prepping their base not to accept any result unless Trump won. This same strategy is used to undermine the credibility of all US institutions - all government agencies, particularly the security agencies, the media. Even the judiciary, any judgement against Trump is corrupt, but judgements in his favour is fair.
Any polls that shows Biden ahead is faulty or manipulated, but those that shows him ahead in indicative of his popularity and assurance of winning the elections.

You were mostly right. In both 2016 and 2020, there was polling that had Trump winning or within the margin of error. In 2020 I believe it was Rasmussen, that had Trump above, by a point or 2, a week before the election. In both cases, the right would use the polling to do exactly as you mentioned. Esp. in 2020 they argued that since in 2016 a lot of polling didn't have Trump winning that if the polls said it was close in 2020 that meant Trump was actually going to win.

Real clear politics had Biden leading. Even fox news polls had Biden leading.
