“You are a reference point for all Nigerian Youth” - HE Oluremi Tinubu, as First Lady receives First Female Nigerian Graduate of Royal Military Academy, UK

The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has welcomed 2nd Lt Princess Oluchukwu Owowoh after she completed her training on the 12th of April, 2024 at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, UK.

The First Lady who noted the sterling performances of 24 year old Owowoh said the officer is a good example of the great feats Nigerian youth can achieve.

“Your determination and resilience are quite remarkable and you are an inspiration to the youth of this country. As a woman, the first who has made a mark in a male dominated field, I salute you”.

“You have the entire world ahead of you.

This is just the beginning. You are now a reference point for all Nigerian Youth. If you remain focused and positive, you will reach your goal in life”.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu in a practical demonstration of celebrating the officer requested all present, including the Wife of the Vice President, Wife of the Speaker, Wives of Ministers, Wives of Service Chiefs and Members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria give a standing ovation to 2nd Lt Owowoh.

“I thank the Nigerian Army for giving 2nd Lt Owowoh the opportunity even in this male dominated field. Thank you”.

In her remarks, the wife of the chief of Defence Staff Mrs Oghogho Musa pointed out that the training and graduation of Owowoh is a testament of improved female inclusion in the country.

The Commandant of NDA, Maj. Gen OJ Ochai explained that Owowoh was the best of the 200 selected cadets fron the NDA.

He said the Officer excelled in three areas earmarked which were, Academics, Military Subjects and Physical Fitness.

She received the prestigious Sandhurst Medal after the likes of Sir Winston Churchill, Prince Willam of Wales and Former head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.

She has since been assigned to the Nigerian Military Intelligence unit on her return to the country.

The First Lady, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Hosts 2nd Lieutenant Princess Oluchukwu Owowoh, First Nigerian Female Graduand of the UK’s Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst (RMAS).

Senator Tinubu, who received Owowoh, led by Major General John Ochai, the Commandant, Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), to the State House on Monday described her achievement as outstanding and divine.

The First Lady commended the Nigeria Army for giving a female the chance to excel, she further encouraged the nation’s youth to emulate Owowoh’ resiliency and cautioned them to desist from being destructive, lousy and problematic.

She recommended Owowoh for a national award and encouraged her superiors to encourage her to become a youth advocate for others to learn positively from her.

Earlier, the NDA Commandant Maj Gen John Ochai had said that Owowoh’s outstanding performance, marks history amidst countries like India, Pakistan, Qatar, UK, Canada, Australia and others, who brought their best to be trained in that institution where she succeeded.

The Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, is one of the most prestigious military training institutions in the world. It is the British Army's initial officer training academy and it also trains officers from other Commonwealth countries.

Several famous Nigerian officers have attended the academy, including General Yakubu Gowon, Major General Hassan Usman Katsina, Major General Illya Bisalla and Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu. The alumni of the college include several members of the British Royal Family (including the Princes William and Harry), members of several Arab royal families (including Kings Talal, Hussein and Abdallah of Jordan) and heads of state of several African and Asian countries (including Generals Akuffo and Afrifa of Ghana). The Sultan of Brunei is also an alumnus of Sandhurst.

Prince William graduated in 2006 and the Queen was inspecting the cadets. Prince William was trying to look serious like the other cadets, but the Queen stopped in front of him and said something that forced him to smile.
