How long are we going to keep mute with the graduate trainee recruitment that has age limits capped around 24-26 years old without considering several external or internal factors that has affected some people from graduating at the expected date.

Does it mean people outside these age limits do not have any future for any corporate role or are they are not qualified

Please share your own experience or way out.

It is an unfortunate issue in Nigeria. In UK there is nothing like such. You can apply to graduate trainee at whatever age as long as you have a graduate certificate and other requirements like grade score. However, age requirement is basically a discrimination.

Company in Nigeria and other places where such practice is done always hangs their justification on career growth expectations. For example, by 40- 45 years, such person should be in an executive level and there could be adequate ROI to the firm. The truth is, how many of them actually get to that same executive level in that same organisation especially now that there is fluidity in talents mobility.

There is urgent needs to have a review of this discriminatory practice especially in Nigeria where educational process is not that smooth- available universities cannot accommodate candidates that seats for Jamb even if all passes and in addition to consistent strikes in universities. These set of people shouldn’t be punish for life over matters that is clearly beyond their control.

Age limit, it a major issue in Nigeria system but am sure we will grow pass this. Can there be different between a young man/woman at 26 and 35?

Am still in doubt of what we are looking for if not getting the job done. I think is a purely design to keep frustrating those who had tried hard on them on to see themselves through school. Instead of encouraging such people we create gap just to keep them perpetually poor.

We can still do better

God bless you sir for putting this out, a beloved friend of mine was disqualified upon his application to sterling oil on the grounds of age, meanwhile he was one of the soundest Petroleum Training Institute has ever produced, strong, agile and willing to learn, with great passion in the oil and gas industry. As we speak, he is contemplating suicide only to inability to secure a job or graduate Trainees owing to age limits.

Thank you for raising this important issue regarding the age limits recruitment. This has affected many individuals in Nigeria.

In our context, the age limits for GT roles often pose significant challenges for those who have been delayed in completing their education due to various external and internal factors. The rigid age restrictions fail to account for the diverse paths individuals may take in their academic journey, which could include factors such as financial constraints, health issue, or family responsibilities.

It's disheartening to see talented individuals being excluded from opportunities based on age, especially when they possess the necessary qualifications and skills for the job. This practice not only limits the potential talent pool but also perpetuates inequality and hinders diversity in the workforce.

To address this issue, organizations and policymakers should consider implementing more inclusive recruitment practices that focus on merit and capabilities rather than arbitrary age limits. In addition, there should be greater emphasis on providing support and opportunities for individuals who may have faced delays in their academics, ensuring that everyone has a fair chance to contribute to the corporate org.

People outside the age limit has future but it has to be bore out of determination.
For someone who is beyond the graduate trainnee age nor have no relevant job experience but needed one.
I will suggest they volunteer themselves for their preferred job role if they have other means of survival. Though their chances of being taken in by some companies are very slim because of their Regulations or SOP.

Volunteer experience is an additional experience to bag that Job you want.
