Why not fight corruption, remove subsides and industrialize?

Keeping subsides, means more debt, which means more burden for the poor. Remove subsides, and there is a chance of investment and jobs , which benefit...the poor.

Remove subsidies should come last. But we all know he don't have a clue on what to do not to talk of the order. As for the corruption part, can he fight himself?

We had to remove subsides because in 2012, the people that now lead us opposed subsidy removal. SO, the government of the day then kept subsides.

Fast forward to August 2022, and the resultant debt was eating 90% of our revenue. Hence all three candidates talking of subsidy removal. And thus tinubu being forced to remove subsides on day 1.

I don't like tinubu, but if I was in his shoes, I too may have to remove subsidy. It;s tough when 90% of your revenue is going to service debt , part of which results from subsidy. Something had to give.

Anway, karma is a baitch.

You did not understand what they said

Nowhere does the report say a thing about restructure and de-incentivise corruption.

What the IMF said was that if you want to remove petrol and electricity, first put a safety net for the most vulnerable in the society. This is good.

I have always supported Conditional Cash Transfers. The World Bank lent Nigeria $800m for it to be shared amongst 15m households. The problem on ground is that there is no database of those to disburse to. Conditional Cash Transfers are a very good way of assist the less privilege as it most often given to mothers (rarely fathers who may spend it on women, booze and gambling). It is means tested. It is also very economical.

So, what should the government do if there's no database? That's the elephant in the room.

I suggest find other ways to help the poor. One may be the lifting of the huge protective wall on many agricultural products Nigeria has no competitive or comparative advantage in such as rice, wheat and poultry. This will crash the price and make food more affordable to the poor.

Government can go further and lift the ban on the importation of Okrika as well.

The petrol and electricity subsidies needs to go. It is simply costing too much and simply increasing the nation's debt burden which is already unbearable.
You actually expect them to say it verbatim. I know you to always put up courtroom attitude of never backing down and trying to win debates but you are far from the mark here.

Expenditure re-priotization can't happen of you share allocation to 36 states where the governor is king. That statement connotes restructuring to allow money be used for most productive things. Stop feigning ignorant stupidity here. The last statement in the quote says it all.

It read: “Expenditure reprioritization is needed to create space for social protection and other priority spending. The authorities have recently approved an enhanced social transfer mechanism developed with World Bank support, and some initial payments have been made.

“In response to governance concerns, the authorities automated and digitalized the system to build a robust mechanism that delivers swift and targeted support to vulnerable households—some 15 million households or 60 million Nigerians potentially benefit from the scheme. Once the safety net has been scaled up and inflation subsides, the government should tackle implicit fuel and electricity subsidies.

IMF is so naive...!

It offends me when people underestimate the level of corruption in this nation.

If you want average Nigerians to benefit from anything, then better directly supervise it.

These heartless corrupt infidels will divert that money, and cook up stats for you.

Subsidy has not been removed.

Plus to get more jobs....(note that if you listen to APC , they will tell you that subsidy removal means more jobs, which is true , but is also not the whole story)...we have to become an industrial economy that exports industrial products.

A corrupt government cannot fight corruption. What sought of government spends 15 trillion on a new road when its electricity infrastructure is collapsing

15 trillion won't fix electricity at all

We kind of need 28 trillion naira annually for 5 years to fix power, according to the experts.

(The road is a useless project though, and it would push us into more debt.).

why rid the fuel moved from 180 to 700?
Re: IMF to FG: Scale Up Cash Transfers To Poor Nigerians by nairalanda1(m): 7:36am On May 10
Bullfallo:
why rid the fuel moved from 180 to 700?

Landing cost of fuel has been over N1000 for several months now(it reached N720 in october 2023, N1000 In Jan this year). That means a subsidy of N300-500 is being paid per liter of fuel.

What happens is that when the cost of subsidy gets too much, government reduces the amount of money spent on subsidy which manifests as a price increase in petrol

IN 2012, fuel was N65 while landing cost was N99. GOvernment increased prices to N97, meaning the difference between pump price and landing cost went to N2 from N34 and thus subsidy costs fell a bit.

IN 2015, fuel was N87, Landing cost was N132. Government increased prices at pump to N145 meaning that the difference went from N55 to zero naira.

And so on.

you are speaking jargons. Subsidy was removed. It was floating of the dollar that increases landing cost. It all shows apc was a failure.
