The Federal Government has announced its plans to embark on a comprehensive review, restructuring and reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in a bid to meet up with the demands of the future.

The Minister of Youth Development, Dr Jamila Ibrahim made this announcement at the opening ceremony of the maiden meeting of NYSC management with heads of corps-producing institutions in Nigeria, held at the National Judicial Institute in Abuja, on Monday.

According to the Minister, over 5000 corps members will have their entrepreneurial ventures funded with up to N10 million.

He explained, “Permit me to inform us very briefly on what is to come regarding NYSC reforms. I’m pleased to announce that I will be inaugurating a team to undertake the review, restructuring and reforms of the NYSC. The first of these reforms will be centred on reviewing participants with an entrepreneurship mindset and making skills development a core of the programme.”

He further explained that they envisioned a future where the NYSC programmes are not only self-sustained but also a revenue-generating programme within the next five years. To achieve this and would institutionalise the NYSC ventures as an investment and asset management outfit.

He also reaffirmed the NYSC’s commitment to the security and general welfare of corps members, appealing to corps-producing institutions, parents, and the general public to complement efforts in sensitising young graduates on call-up for national service.

“We urge you to use all available avenues to complement our efforts in sensitising young graduates on call-up for national service to avoid travelling at night when reporting to their states of deployment,” Ahmed said.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, in his address, welcomed the participants to Abuja and commended the NYSC management for choosing the city as the venue for the meeting.

Wike who was represented by the Mandate Secretary, Women Affairs Secretariat, FCT Administration, Mrs Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi said, “NYSC has consistently symbolised our collective commitment to national development, unity, and integration. We must adopt innovative strategies to surmount challenges and enhance best practices for the engagement of our young graduates in national development efforts.”

He praised the NYSC’s efforts to enhance its operations through technology-driven approaches and urged the to actively contribute to the meeting’s success.

Focused, funded entrepreneurship for self sustainability is a sure welcome development. However, vast majority of these to-be entrepreneurs will hit the woods sooner than they take off as far as the business climate remains arid. Plus Nigerian factor will enter the scheme and you will start hearing Chinyere Sadiya Oludayo has diverted 10billions, and later you hear that the entrepreneurs have refused to refund the grant given to them or you hear unborn almajiris, agberos and school drop outs have being enrolled in the Entrepreneurship scheme.

At the end, only a few serious minded corp members will make it.

they are struggling to get what they will use for 29th may speech.

What happened to funding 100,000 ex corp members with 10 million each (1 trillion naira in total) after reviewing their plans to create employment and exportable wealth and see if Nigeria will not exceed a trillion dollar economy within 4 years and unemployment rate reduced by over 50%

Before any body talk any rubbish the last budget is about 30 trillion naira so if youth can get 1 trillion yearly it is not a bad idea

The scheme that has integrated nothing and fostered no unity among the tribes of the country. Rather than have a reform that ensures that the scheme fulfils its purpose, they want to have a reform that is more geared towards money. Of course, money is the main thing. Unity and integration can go to blazes.

Is it 10 million for 5,000 entrepreneurial ventures or N10 million each for 5,000 entrepreneurial ventures? I hope this isn’t a lie.

Please they should add to the reform that every prospective corps member is eligible to serve in his/her geopolitical zone except he/she opts for other zones when given options between his zone & any other zone. Let prospective corps members choose states within their respective zones.

Simply turn all NYSC camp to a farming training center... Then create farming centers across each state and deploy corpers there. Provide them with the necessary machines for farming and see how food prices will crash.

N10 million each. Nigeria has tons of naira. They are just looking for ways to inject it into the economy without spiking inflation.

This has Bosun Tijani's handwriting on it. The NYSC will become the largest hub in Africa.

Counterpart seed funding will follow.

True a lot of corpers are too thick to take advantage but some can and will form teams to seek funding.

A great idea. Execution will be key.

Re: FG Set To Restructure, Reform NYSC by Judolisco(m): 9:43am On May 14
Nothing new here.... No be d same SAED? madam minister go to south Korea, they also have a similar program there and learn what they're doing differently, I'm not of the support that NYSC should be scrapped, some of my best moments as a Nigerian was when I was serving.....

One pressing issue we have in dis country is that majority of the youth ain't working and a country where at least 70% of her youths ain't working, that country can never move forward....

NYSC should be divided into sections, NYSC EDUCATION, NYSC health, NYSC engineering, nysc agriculture, NYSC military/paramilitary..... Then deploy youths to different sectors, especially agriculture.....

A trained teacher was posted to my PPA back then in Ekiti, only for her to say she's not teaching, and she relocated... I was shocked because some of us ain't even trained teachers, all dis nonsense should stop, you'll see corpers now paying 100k for juicy PPA and juicy state... Abeg how dat corper no go steal public funds when given the opportunity?

Na wetin oga minister suppose change bdis
