Are Agberos A Necessary Evil In Nigeria? by 4mee: 2:46pm On May 12 |
When Bayo bought a commercial tricycle, he had no idea what he was getting into. Before he could put the vehicle on the road, he had to get approval from a unit, an axis, a zone, local government and state. He had to pay tickets daily and marker costs with each trip. His life became a living hell. What he didn't know was that the NURTw mafia even had people who were extorting them also. Below, Bayo and his colleagues debate NURTw officials on how much they collect, and what it is used for. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rhLVnckmDs Why exactly does the NURTW exist? What exactly are the tolls for? if you have answers, please let me know |

It is global issue. I saw documentary about Italian mafia and how they muscle in on the lucrative tomato industry in Sicily. Go to America, they're right there too. 3 Likes |

CodeTemplar: ^^^ Interesting how the comparisons are always made with the dysfunctional bits in other societies - never their functional parts. Tell us about 'agberoism' in Norway, Finland and Denmark - then we can have a lively discussion. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

The 'chairman' tells us 'marker' money (collected from drivers) is used to 'settle' cultists and other undesirables...or else they will make trouble. There you have it...its a 'protection' racket, plain and simple. The 'chairman' also tells us he 'pays' soldiers, regular police and SARS (I take it this was before SARS was disbanded...or he is using the term loosely to describe any special police anti-crime units?) from the 'ticket money'. So what exactly is this payment? Is it a bribe? Is it a donation? Is it recorded in official government documents? The sad thing is that none of this is new. What is even sadder is that very few people truly recognize the effect of this extortion on productivity and the value chain. And in all this, the lagos state government (as well as other state governments) looks away and pretends not to know what's going on. We are not ready. When we are ready we know what to do. 3 Likes |

Grown men tying themselves in knots trying to explain why the ticket reads N200 but the union collects N1,800 or N2,000 from drivers. The NURTW in Lagos is nothing but a collection of thoroughly corrupt, debased and debauched men with no honour, no accountability, no virtue...nothing. They are the very worst that society has to offer...men promoted far above their station by an equally immoral, compromised LASG. Their senior members (who are always in the news for the wrong reasons) are very close friends of BAT. He recently took time off from running a country of 200 million people to 'settle' a quarrel among the members of this thug cartel masquerading as a so called transport union. That says it all, really. 3 Likes |

Unions are everywhere in the world. Difference is that in developed economies, the union dues are deducted at source by employers. But in Nigeria, they have to use force to get people to pay their dues. We all try to outsmart ourselves in Nigeria |
Re: Are Agberos A Necessary Evil In Nigeria? by Fujiyama: 8:41pm On May 13 |
Nyamiriflathed: ^^^ No. That is not a valid defence. The good thing is that the corrosive effects of this deviant agbero sub-culture will be fully made manifest in a few years - and there will be no argument about it when it happens. It will be way too late to do anything meaningful about it then. An entire system built around the criminal slothfulness of cultists, thugs, NURTW officials, sundry loafers etc. and their blatant extortion of bus drivers and tricyclists. People who hate honest labour but who love feeding fat off the labour of others - and the system allows this! This is the mark of a society in freefall - and the so called indigenes of Lagos stand by and do nothing. They enable this abomination with their silence, thinking that vain chants about Lagos' dubious mega city aspirations is going to solve this problem. Reality will bite soon. Hard. |

Nyamiriflathed:The dues are unnecessary and very unfair to drivers and passengers as it's one of the factors that leads to fare hike. Unlike what they have in developed countries, what operates in Nigeria is an exploitative relationship between drivers and drivers' union. Drivers in Nigeria pay on every trip and at every stop instead of paying regular association dues 1 Like |

4mee:Many people who don't understand the Yoruba language are wrongly translating the word Agbero which literally means to carry passengers in English. Period. Agbero was WRONGLY translated as a "thug" in the English subtitle of that video. A lot of those Agberos wear official NURTW uniforms and they are also bus drivers and those NURTW members are also registered Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) members. So, these guys are NOT thugs and NURTW is a national organization with the headquarters in Abuja and 36 state branches. Years back, I did my research and readings on the origins of the transport unions and Agberos in Lagos and Nigeria. Now, there are some impostors and urban street gang members who migrated from other states to hustle in Lagos State, and they extort money from folks. Those are NOT the real Agberos but simply impostors and must be removed forcibly and given jobs to do in the modern agribusiness space for instance. Tbh, it's better to have an e-payment system for collecting the daily dues from transport drivers by all the transport union bodies so as to remove the inefficiencies and financial leakages that can occurs using the current system. 1 Like |

Konquest: ^^^ Interesting how the impostors and gang members are always migrants from other states who come to Lagos to commit crimes and extort decent, law abiding people...while the indigenes are without blemish. I suggest you take another look at the video. The stuff said in it is nothing new - its been common knowledge for years. The whole NURTW thing in Lagos is a well organized, well oiled protection racket - and also a state approved extortion ring. It has been this way for decades. Nothing new there. It simply isn't true to claim the problem is people from other states. Konquest: ^^^ But you know who to direct this recommendation to, don't you? You think they don't know what to do? If the powers that be want the inefficiency and the leakages to stop this very minute, they will. But the powers don't want it to stop - because they profit from it. They persist with this rotten, foul system and at the same time continue with the evil propaganda of Lagos as a mega city etc. etc. The daily ticket issued to a driver reads N200 and yet he actually pays N1800 or N2000 each day. What happened to the rest of the money? NURTW pays SARS, OP MESA, and NPF operatives - what exactly are these payments? NURTW pays the LASG - how much exactly and is this money documented? We are not children. |

Nyamiriflathed:in my first comment I mentioned Italian Sicily mafiosos extorting even tomatoes industry. They now own most of that industry and run them with mostly African migrants(let's not say slave). Please research that a little. It is plain mafia/underworld stuff being masked as a union. What are the core functions of these unions? Are they backed by law? If yes, cant the agberos in govt pretending to be progressives put their activities on Remitta or other platform? The devil has these kind of units in many nations of the world. Go and research the american crime world and realize even the wall street executives are not immune to the rent seeking madness. All those crime thrillers about Genovesse, the Five families of NY, Gambino, Luciano, Gotti, Lucesse etc you think they are fictional? They are censored stuff in fact. Recently one of them was in news. They still operate and as Paul rightly submitted, the love of money na the root of all kinds of evils. All kinds indeed. Then we have the emerging northern bandits who levy producers of essentials likes being dome in industrial Lagos. |
