Subsidy was fraught with corruption but has anyone been arrested? It has even been reintroduced without arrests and prosecution so expect the current corruption to be more severe. Our structure and attitude has been influenced by availability of easy crude money. Fortunately, that money is being used to repay wasted loans by past govt. Restructuring is starting us, either forcefully or diplomatically.

"Fortunately"? Or 'unfortunately'?

Restructuring. Yes. Let us hope it doesn't come about forcefully because the negative effect might end up being worse than what we have today.

Bottom line you remove subsidies everything scatter then put subsidies back and everything else go back as b4. All ready they are taking in more in revenue from taxes. Just go back to default b4 May 2023.

1. Free transport to work

2. Subsidised homes. Like the ones built by shagari in the 80’s . Little one two & 3 bedroom houses. They would pay N5000.00 per month

3. Build large cooperative stores that would sell groceries at rock bottom price. That means government would buy fruit and vegetables from farmers and subsidies them. Including meat rice& fish.

It can be done. There would be know reasons to increase wages which would eventually lead to a runaway inflation. The 650,000 labour is asking for would lead to runaway inflation just like in Zimbabwe.
govt csnt debate prices with farmers. They can only give loans and get paid with produce for it.

If the president can unilaterally make pronouncements that impoverish the people, then a sincere leader can do same in the opposite direction.

Though I agree that it is a vicious circle because the society breeds the politicians and the politicians run the society, so its basically garbage in, garbage out. Our sociopolitical culture and values are at its lowest ebb in decades.

But some people have to break that mold or else the country is doomed.

I agree with you reverse the policy.

There is what is called deflation. When prices starts tumbling downwards. Look if we look inwards produce what we eat, build our little houses with our own products and have free transport. Naira would not only gain value the 30,000 Naira of today may actually fall to the equivalent of $1,000.00

Its that simple. Subsidy removal was a big and costly mistake. It's never too late. Return back the price of fuel to 180. And dollar back to 400.

It would take alot of time but things will go back gradually after 6month to 1 year

But increasing the price of PMS by over 200 per cent in one single day does not lead to runaway inflation. Then rapidly following up by floating the naira in an import dependent economy does not lead to runaway inflation. Then quickly scoting around for everything you can possibly increase, including the price of electricity does not lead to runaway inflation. And you havent started yet, the hard on in your trousers is still boiling.

God bless you for these cos I used to tell some of my friends and even neighbours that increment in salary will not solve current challenges but the look me as a bad man just because they work with government and I don't. Anytime there is increase in salary right from 1999, there is always increase in price of goods and services.

Let's just become communist already. Forget the wages they can decide what we eat, where we live, where we work and how many kids we have. The state has proven to be good at running schools, the electrical grid and other industries like oil refineries. Revolution now comrades.
grin grin grin cheesy
Workers get communist wages but spend ultra-capitalist, where prices rise daily.
Nor be juju be that?

Minimum wage increment should be gradual but should end up around 125 to 150k within like 2 years. Govt can even use it to campaign from mid-2026 to early 2027 as an achievement.

And govt should try to reduce inflation. Food, fuel and transportation are the main drivers of inflation in 9ja. Govt should look at those areas to tackle inflation.

The last two aspects of your suggestions were practiced in the former Soviet Union (USSR).

That socialist strategy proved to be unsustainable over the long-term hence the Russians after the peaceful break up of the former USSR into independent countries opened up to the free market economic system.

The BEST bet is to introduce more CNG refill stations such as those already in existence by NIPCO, and more CNG buses and vehicles fully to transport finished goods, farm produce, and people. This would rapidly drop the cost of transportation and goods and services would be cheaper. But this must be monitored because there are greedy people who would still want to game the economic system to maximize profits. So, whistleblower phone numbers can be provided for folks to report food items hoarders, and illegal check points were money is extorted by rogue policemen and soldiers, and state agents that collect illegal levies from food trucks moving from one state to another. There would be an instant drop of food prices in partnership with the market unions.

The second solution would be to invest heavily in drones for security purposes to prevent kidnappings by foreign Fulani nomadic invaders fleeing the drought and violence in the Sahelian region countries of West Africa and armed robberies that have made driving on some highways and going to the farms for commercial and subsistence farmers nearly all over Nigeria a nightmare.

The death penalty has to be implemented ASAP via electric chairs, lethal injections, or hanging. This is meant to serve as a deterance.

That's not how to run an economy that will eventually be productive.
Have you ever wondered why there are homeless people(USA Citizens) on the streets in the USA, but the USA is giving 50 billion dollars in aid to Ukraine ?
What you just described is just another way of moving the subsidy around.
Schools should be free.
Housing Loan for workers should be at a low rate.
Provide incentives such as land and tax breaks business start ups for the first 10 years.
Subsidies and free stuff should be for disable, children and the elderly.
We are the 6th producer of liquefied natural gas NLNG in the world.
1 VLCC Tanker of LNG sells for at least 300 million dollars. Nigeria is not broke !! We have just being grossly mismanaged.

If you are a good economist inflation is the easiest thing to curb. Find what is causing the inflation

1 transport cost that should be taking off once fruit & vegs are purchase & warehouse in the cooperatives. The cooperatives on the hand would sell to the people at subsides rate. Bingo inflation over

2. Gasoline since government cig powered Lorrie’s would be doing the delivery to the cooperatives that would be reduced to the bearest minimum .
If inflation was that easy to curtail, how come the US is still finding it difficult to manage inflation over there.
Right now, Fed. is still battling to know whether reduce the interest rate or allow it to remain like that.

The best solution to the problem is simple. Let all the political office holders be integrated in the minimum wage. Stop all the bogus allowance and medical tourism. And let their children attend public schools. I bet you the economy will be revived within 1 year and everybody will be happy. My own opinion.

It is for public workers. The public minimum rate drives the private minimum rate. And in most cases the private minimum is always higher than the public one except domestic staffs who stay in ova’s house. Private individuals would also be allowed to shop in the cooperatives so long they pay annual fee of N10,000.00 per year.

Anything subsidy in this country is synonymous to corruption. We don't want any free thing from government. Let them pay living wage. If I have all the money I need, even if a tuber of yam is 5k, I can buy it. Workers are not beggars.

There would be no need to increase salaries you said? Workers are spending money on many other things apart from transport, accommodation and food. The lists of basic needs and essential items and services that people spend money on is endless.
You talked about runaway inflation that increase in minimum wages may cause but fact that you're ignoring is that there is already runaway inflation. I'm even surprised that you are not aware of it despite your username

You are asking the wrong question here knowing what your average politician who has been occupying political office since 1999 is packing month in month out. Senior civil servants are not left out. Nigeria as a country is making more than enough money to make citizens comfortable through govt welfarism campaign. Corruption is what we need to kill, not that we are not generating enough revenue

You mumu na multidimensional
Farmers have also sold cheap from creation

Middlemen which the govt will cut off is who or what eat up profit from farmers. All the govt need do is erase middlemen n replace them with an effective govt agencies which we can't seem to do in Nigeria.

Just yesterday an Igbo lady in Niger created a thread of how she buy close to 22 pieces of yam for 10K each piece from her sample is sold for 2K or more in Lagos by middlemen.

The difference in prices does return to the farmer but goes to feed the beast n ever hungry middlemen that consistute nothing to the society but drain the society of all benefits.

budaatum:

In order to subsidise to feed you, government will buy cheap from farmers, who will then find it unprofitable to plant food so food gets imported at inflated prices.

Trust me. You are worth far more than 30k a month or you at least ought to be.
