Yeah, for sure the Govs will always tilt the state police structure for their selfish political gains, but if they'll deploy them to effectively tackle the insecurity ravaging the populace, then I think we would have made progress as a country.

I don't care who endorses this idea, personally speaking I do not support having state police in Nigeria

Here on Nairaland some people can't have a difference of opinion without dragging tribe into it, imagine what would now happen if two people from different tribes have a disagreement and the matter is taken to the state police of one of the parties, their is no way the judgement will be fair.

Some states in Nigeria are not economically viable and are struggling to pay basic salaries of their existing staff, you now want to add the burden of paying salaries of state policemen.

During elections it means the incumbent state governor can use apparatus of state police to rig and witchhunt the opposition, and he will succeed since the commissioner for police in the state will dance to the governor's tune since he appointed him!

The problems this thing would create are just too many! undecided

Thank you Jesus..

Once state police is approved , I'll go to Anambra and join.. I greatly feel like putting a finger on the trigger and pressing it so hard against Fulani terrorits and unknown gunmen

don't forget we have the judiciary to checkmate them in terms of Electoral malpractice. We could also have a situation whereby state and federal police monitor the election and possibly a limited number of military presence.

You won't stop disgracing yourself as a typical zombie! State policing issue has been a subject of discussion before the over ambitious moves of obi to rule this country. It is obvious, you are one of those situational lovers of the initial zoo!

Of course they will support, it's in their interest and that of the governors. Tell them to support local government autonomy now, you go hear another story
Re: 36 Assembly Speakers Endorse State Police by yemex04(m): 8:38am On May 17
Would they all also be quick to endorse the Local Government Autonomy? A well functioning LG administration is key to enhanced security also. So they should not just stop at endorsing state police, they should take a step further to more importantly endorse local govts full autonomy.

Presently, Nigeria as a nation have no better options than state police.
let every state be responsible for their own security and if there is any upsurge of insecurities in any state, that state governor will be hold responsible and could as well be impeached by their house of assembly.
The federal policing is not working in Nigeria, as can be seen by all these incessant killings, kidnappings and destruction of livelihoods by terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, and Fulani -herdsmen terrorists, leading to the current food insecurities, yet some Nigerians want us to continue along this same ineffective policing system.
Nigeria need states police as soon as possible, instead of all needless arguments.

You hurriedly agreed to endorse this because you know it will help you politically. NIGERIANS have been begging you for years to back the AUTONOMY of LGAs.
Re: 36 Assembly Speakers Endorse State Police by seunayantokun(m): 8:47am On May 17
When you're wicked, you become mentally retarded. That's for those who are coming up with excuses to stand against state policing. 'State governors will use them bla bla bla'; they will become thugs bla bla bla'; etc. They find it difficult to imagine that they are not inferior to other humans in countries where state, council and city policing work. They find it difficult to imagine that the essence of putting the right operating law in place is to reduce the number of cases of abuse as obtainable in the UK, US, etc. They find it difficult to think out any new good thing . They just believe they are incapable of anything good while always wishing for an Eldorado economy and development. The heavens over them are ceiled with iron darkness which no light can penetrate. They are the type who just cannot think outside the box - they unfortunately picture their desired future of difference in the undesirable present space and come up with impossibility. They think the world started and ends in their myopic mind. And, the only cardinal word in their lexicon which they blurt when ideas for new steps of progress are muted is 'impossible!', impossible!', impossible!'.

We need state police, even community police as well. It's a total fantasy to think one single Nigerian police force can police a nation of over 200 million people
What is also needed is proper regulation and oversight to ensure abuses are kept to a minumum by dubious governors
Re: 36 Assembly Speakers Endorse State Police by Mrexcell(m): 9:11am On May 17
Nice one from the speakers I don't expect any IGP to support state police because they know they will loose their huge federal allocations which they most times embezzle and also loose their federal influence over states.

We are ripe for state police but we are not ready yet for it,
Most of our governors can't handle it in terms of huge financing it's structure.
Witch hunting is still there.

State police where operations and strategy are controlled locally while administrative matters like recruitment and promotion are controlled at the federal level is the way to go.

If nigeria is not ripe for state police then nigeria is not also ripe for either independence or even restructuring. The advantages of state police outweighs the disadvantages imagine a situation where fulaniherdsmen will be killing and sacking innocent people in their own communities but the state governor can't do absolutely nothing because he doesn't have the constitutional powers to order his commissioner of police to go after the foreign fulani invaders we have seen this happen in enugu, benue and other states.

State police is welcomed

At least to fight Fulani terrorists and bandits without interference from Abuja.

Reason Fulani bandits can kill and kidnap without a corresponding response from the police is because Abuja police hq is controlled by Fulanis in the corridors of government. Forget Egbetokun is Yoruba, he is a stooge of the Fulanis. Even Tinubu is a stooge of the Fulanis.

If I control policing in my state, I can deploy the police efficiently to curb crime without any political interference.

Crime in Nigeria is mostly state sponsored.

Very true many nigerian youths will now be encouraged to join their state police because the fear of being posted to sambisa forest to fight bokoharam will no longer be there anymore. Ametukun, ebubeagu and other local state vigilante outfits will all now be submerged into their various state police.

To avoid state governors abusing State Police, every State Police Chief, including his Board members, are to be elected by the people, and accountable to the people.
That's how it's done in most of Europe.
Re: 36 Assembly Speakers Endorse State Police by charged: 9:48am On May 17
hmmm....
Why should the IG of Police say such embarrassing talk regarding this last month? WHY?....without telling us which time or year we will be 'ripe enough' for state police?, maybe never (instead of him putting things in order and making it a LANDMARK ACHIEVEMENT of this administration that during Prez Tinubu presidency o, State Police system was installed)....see him even calling for bundling of ndlea, frsc, etc, with police!!!

As a matter of fact we are more than ready and OVERDUE 'sef' for State Police Departments!

The only thing is that, FEDERAL POLICE MUST HAVE SUPERIOR AUTHORITY over some cases in ANY state. That is what happens in the USA, Canada, Britain, Italia, Germany and co. The US FBI have superior influence over any state police where they go to, e.g. over the NYPD, and co.

But NIGERIA IS TOO BIG for one central police to police. {Dont let them put fear in you say politician will misuse them}
Re: 36 Assembly Speakers Endorse State Police by Charlly1907: 10:39am On May 17
I will support state Police because it make sense, aslo ensure the security of the state at large.
People complain that state governor will use it against their opponent's, people that aren't even governor use this federal police against their opponent. What i got from this is that we need it now because of the insecurity in the country.
Secondly the state police will be close to the community than this federal police
Thirdly state police wil reduce crimes within the state.the criminar will know that the state police man known all his hid out and way

Totally agree with you. Many people forget that state governors are already the chief law enforcement officers in their states. The DPP and courts are already under them. The simple fact is we can't keep putting off what is necessary due to fear of abuse. State police does not mean there will not still be Federal police, it just means the roles and responsibilities will now change. Things like traffic control, CID, forensics can all be done at the state level, while things like anti riot, elections..can remain with the Federal police

Federal police is worse. Should I send you a picture of a scene where the police were seen snatching ballot boxes and some, thumbprinting on ballot papers? Who were they working for...ghosts? I want you to Google it yourself. We need to try a state police first and see. I don't know why some people are afraid of it.
