What Is The Cultural Origin Of Egusi Soup by iwuchukwutony(m): 12:20pm On May 23 |
Is it traditionally associated with the Igbos or Yoruba's ethnic groups? Some one should clarify me on this with evidence. |

iwuchukwutony:Egusi soup originated from Igboland and the word Egwusi was misspelled Egusi during the arrival of Europeans,by the explorers. Egusi has many alternate names across Igboland, often bordering on dialects and communities. |

Onyiiobi7735:Your post here is absolutely FALSE! Check the attached screenshots below for more historical information. This is exactly how some highly dishonest young Ibos on an NL frontpage thread blatantly lied that egusi is not a Yoruba word but from their language. Fortunately well-read folks of Yoruba descent took all of them to the cleaners when it was CLEARLY shown that EGUNSI (egusi) is a Yoruba word that was already recorded in the first Yoruba-English dictionary published in 1843! The first Ibo dictionary by Bishop Crowther in 1888 however had NO egusi or even Egwusi listed in it and subsequent editions simply because ELILI or Enini are the original Ibo names for melon (egusi). =>https://www.nairaland.com/8047476/igbo-soups-all-nigerian-tribes The final blow to the relentless liars among the young Ibos who SHAMEFULLY do not know their own history came when the screenshot of the Longman Ibo dictionary were uploaded on that thread and the Longman entry under egusi CLEARLY showed that the IBOS got the word egusi as a LOAN word from the "Yor" (Yorubas). The entry also referenced Elili as the ACTUAL Ibo name for the yoruba word egusi. That also AFFIRMED that egusi soup has been eaten in Yorubaland for centuries. These are facts that older Ibo scholars such as J.C. Echeruo who contributed to that Longman in Ibo dictionary already knew... That egusi is an original Yoruba word. =>https://www.nairaland.com/8047476/igbo-soups-all-nigerian-tribes/1 Kudos to the Yoruba folks for having a Westernized and educated elite and middle class in the 1800s and for documenting their linguistic and cultural histories as far back as the 1800s which have enabled the ability to debunk the inciting LIES and historical FORGERIES by cultural thieves among the younger Ibos trying to STEAL and claim Yoruba words as theirs. 1 Like 2 Shares
