Olayemi Cardoso, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, has blamed the naira’s decline and instability on the “seasonal demand” of the global foreign exchange market Peoples Gazette checks on Aboki Forex indicated that the naira exchanged in April for N1,000 was selling for N1,500 Wednesday afternoon.

Speaking at the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, Mr Cardoso said the naira’s instability reflected the interplay between demand and supply.

“Members further observed the recent volatility in the foreign exchange market attributing this to seasonal demand, a reflection of the interplay between demand and supply freely functioning market system,” Mr Cardoso said.

The CBN chief, however, said the officials were working out modalities that would relieve the nation from the economic burden of “seasonal demands.”

“There is light at the end of the tunnel,” Mr Cardoso said Tuesday. “We are beginning to get some reliefs” which he said were proofs that “the tools that the CBN is using is working.”

The CBN governor said the approval of 14 International Money Transfer Operators (IMTO) was a step in the right direction as it would engender healthy competition.

“The MPC commended the bank for its recent approval of 14 International Money Transfer Operators (IMTO),” Mr Cardoso stated. “This is expected to improve competition and lower the cost of transactions, thus attracting more remittances through formal channels.” The instability of the naira was affecting the purchasing power of Nigerians, who depend heavily on imported goods for daily survival.

sad They will never take the blame or responsibility but keep on passing the buck. Gross ineptitude, incompetency and cluelessness @ it peak.

So when is this patch patch CBN dumbass figurehead going to apologise to the BDCs, forex speculators, Biance, crypto traders, International students and others that his clueless regime have blamed and harassed for the free falls of the naira? How long are Nigerians supposed to suffer while inflation skyrockets? It's the CBN's job to manage the economy, not to make excuses.

Meanwhile IMF and World Bank who kept on goading the govt to economic cul-de-sac are wicked western organisations to influence Africa with grants and loans, in order to favour the westerners by sabotaging Africa with heavy loans that later become a bad luck against our economy.

I thought their keyboard warriors said they were making a progress.

Nigeria's inflation rate is now at 33.69% as at April 2024 - the highest in 28years since Mar 1996. Since the turn of the new year, the naira, which was floated almost a year ago has witnessed a dramatic depreciation, leaving a devastating mark on organised businesses across the board.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) low net FX reserves and the defense of the naira sparked risk-off sentiments amongst foreign investors and limited inflows from Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) with multi- national companies leaving Nigeria in droves.

Right now it's the turn of “seasonal demands”
to be blamed as the reason our Naira is crashing and becoming worthless

It's now so obvious that Tinubu with his patch patch CV CBN governor got absolutely nothing to offer

Since the time of Buhari, the APC does nothing but blames and more blames. A regime that has forced investors out through inconsistent policies and corruption. A government where tax collectors are managing the economy with profligacy and looting as philosophy. A government without blueprint, which rather announced subsidy removal and floating of the naira in the inauguration field without policy evaluation and analysis can only be equated to a cripple leading the blind. Nigerians entered a one chance bus in the
agbado regime since 2023.

I think that the elementary economics makes this simple. Demand and supply. As a country we demand dollars more than we demand our local currency.

Or should we even talk about our politicians who love to Embezzle in dollars?

Or our import driven economy?

The indices are against the naira.

Oga you are confused and empty

The fact you are already saying you aren't magician the last time is usually the precursor that failed govt like buhari started with

We would waste another four years only for you people to later admit your were failures and subsidy was still paid

Binance is no longer responsible for it?

EFCC and NSA should arrest seasonal demand.

Seasonal demand is a saboteur.

If seasonal demand escapes, they will talk to INTERPOL to extradite seasonal demand.

Nonsense and Babablu.
