The University of Benin (UNIBEN) is facing a looming power crisis as the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) threatens to disconnect the university’s power supply over a disputed electricity bill. The university is contesting the bill, which skyrocketed to N280 million for the month of April 2024, compared to N80 million in March 2024. https://metrowatchxtra.com/2024/05/25/new-tariff-uniben-cries-out-we-cant-afford-n280m-monthly-bill-as-darkness-looms/ 2 Likes

If the managements of establishments like UNIBEN are not corrupt and have not been using electricity bill payment as a channel to steal money, why hasn't UNIBEN been using prepaid meters? Can't prepaid meters serve such an environment? 12 Likes |

What a shame! A school like Uniben should be capable of generating their own electricity like the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University. Maybe their VC should visit ABU for training. 20 Likes

President Tinubu, It is time your government comes clean with Nigerians about the privatization of virtually everything in the country. Instead of transparently selling these assets to private individuals through an open and fair process, it appears they have been handed over to oligarchs and monopolists behind closed doors. This has led to an untenable situation where the common people are bearing the brunt of these decisions. For instance, if the University of Benin requires 280 million Naira for electricity, this cost will inevitably be transferred to the students. Similarly, with petrol prices soaring to 700 Naira, the ripple effects on food transportation, education, and other essentials are being felt by citizens across the board, without any form of relief. This direct transfer of financial burden is exacerbating the already harsh living conditions for many Nigerians. Some institutions and sectors should be shielded from such drastic escalations. Yet, your government has taken measures like increasing interest rates to 27%—one of the highest rates globally—without any corresponding alleviation measures. This move is not only inhumane but also displays a lack of strategic foresight. Countries that have implemented similar policies typically ensure that employment opportunities are available and that social welfare programs support the poor and elderly. The removal of the fuel subsidy appears to be merely a transfer of wealth to those selling petrol. Similarly, the removal of the forex subsidy eliminates a critical buffer for businesses that rely on foreign goods. What exactly does your administration have planned for the average Nigerian? We are not asking for palliatives or student loans that only add to their burden. With students facing electricity bills of 28 million Naira, these so-called solutions are laughable at best. The minimum wage has remained an afterthought even as the hardship faced by Nigerians intensifies daily. As you mark your first year in office, when will the "talakawas," "àwọn aláìní," and "ndị ogbenye" see any tangible benefits from your administration? It's time for your government to prioritize the well-being of the masses, fulfill your promises, and implement real strategies that provide relief and support to the Nigerian people. 19 Likes 1 Share |

280M in one month is outrageous. Most of these government schools don't have access to their IGR; they depend on government subvention and they are already underfunded by government and overburdened with staff salaries and maintainance... While we understand that power is "privatized", increasing electricity tariff of an underfunded, overburdened institution is not reasonable 10 Likes 1 Share |

And some clowns say the increase in electricity tariff would lead to a reduction in cost of production. How some people throw away logic and common sense just to be identified as supporting apc is beyond rationalisation. 2 Likes 1 Share |

...this electricity increase is not a well thought decision. It will cause inflation greater than fuel subsidy. Tinubu will burial Nigeria. The increase is just too much and unsubstaniable. It's the government that devalued the naira as against the dollar. Making gas and fuel even more expensive after subsidy removal. Increasing tarrif because of dollar will further burial Nigeria in the coming months. It usually take 4months before these types of effect start puring in. Just imagine university of Benin as a big factory? And a sudden increase in their tariff. What would happened to this type of company? Increase of their products by 300%. And there will be two things involved. Either they closed up or they lost market share. They will reduce workers loads as well. This similar thing is what is happening accross the country for people using large electricity bills. so many companies currently. Hotels and factory will find it difficult to stay are float. 1 Like |
