What a shame! A school like Uniben should be capable of generating their own electricity like the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University. Maybe their VC should visit ABU for training.

The solar project at ABU (and UI) are government funded projects through TETFund in collaboration with a German firm.

Most Tertiary institutions in Nigeria have energy development plans, but the issue is funding and approvals.

There are tertiary institutions that have developed better and cheaper electricity prepaid metres, but no funding and support. There are others that are ready to develop mini hydro power stations, but government refused approval.

You can't afford 280m naira bill but you know how to use 280 million naira light.

The truth is that they didn't use 280 million naira power. 80 million naira in March, 280 million naira in April!! All of us in Nigeria classified as band A are facing the same issue, just that institutions like universities will be on a far bigger scale. We didn't have power supply for 48 hours straight, band A customers! The light they brought three days ago had spoilt my "follow come" phone charger, expensive charger for that matter, band A light be dat o!
This fraud shouldn't be allowed to stand

President Tinubu,

It is time your government comes clean with Nigerians about the privatization of virtually everything in the country. Instead of transparently selling these assets to private individuals through an open and fair process, it appears they have been handed over to oligarchs and monopolists behind closed doors. This has led to an untenable situation where the common people are bearing the brunt of these decisions.

For instance, if the University of Benin requires 280 million Naira for electricity, this cost will inevitably be transferred to the students. Similarly, with petrol prices soaring to 700 Naira, the ripple effects on food transportation, education, and other essentials are being felt by citizens across the board, without any form of relief. This direct transfer of financial burden is exacerbating the already harsh living conditions for many Nigerians.

Some institutions and sectors should be shielded from such drastic escalations. Yet, your government has taken measures like increasing interest rates to 27%—one of the highest rates globally—without any corresponding alleviation measures. This move is not only inhumane but also displays a lack of strategic foresight. Countries that have implemented similar policies typically ensure that employment opportunities are available and that social welfare programs support the poor and elderly.

The removal of the fuel subsidy appears to be merely a transfer of wealth to those selling petrol. Similarly, the removal of the forex subsidy eliminates a critical buffer for businesses that rely on foreign goods. What exactly does your administration have planned for the average Nigerian? We are not asking for palliatives or student loans that only add to their burden. With students facing electricity bills of 28 million Naira, these so-called solutions are laughable at best.

The minimum wage has remained an afterthought even as the hardship faced by Nigerians intensifies daily. As you mark your first year in office, when will the "talakawas," "àwọn aláìní," and "ndị ogbenye" see any tangible benefits from your administration? It's time for your government to prioritize the well-being of the masses, fulfill your promises, and implement real strategies that provide relief and support to the Nigerian people.
fineboynl:
...this electricity increase is not a well thought decision. It will cause inflation greater than fuel subsidy. Tinubu will burial Nigeria. The increase is just too much and unsubstaniable.

It's the government that devalue the naira as against the dollar. Making gas and fuel even more expensive after subsidy removal.

Increasing tarrif because of dollar devalue will further burial Nigeria in the coming months. It usually take 4months before the types of effect start puring in.

Just imagine university of Benin is a big factory? And a sudden increase in tariff.

What would happened to this type of company? Increase of their products by 300%. And there will be two things involved. Either they closed up or they lost market share. They will reduce workers loads.

This seminar thing is what is happening to so many companies currently. Hotels and factory.

Tinubu is really damaging our economy, seriously.

If the management of UNIBEN is not corrupt and has not been using the electricity bill payment as a channel to steal money, why hasn't UNIBEN been using prepaid meters?
Name one big establishment that uses a PP meter.

Here in UK my university has gone green... They use solar and other renewable energy sources to get clean energy.

Considered how many billions it'll cost to do that? Where'll Uniben find it?

It seems you guys don't read news before responding. Electricity per kwh per hour was increased from #66 to #225. Is that not a big difference? That's almost 500% increase. If their electricity bill was #80m/Month before, it's now #280m. How do you expect institution like Uniben to cope with this geometric increase? Now, if it persists, the university will be left with no other option than to increase school charges to meet up since subvention fund from the government hasn't increased.
You think this is an issue of prepaid meter?
It seems you don't know the issue of this band. People forcefully categorized as band A have disconnected from BEDC source because they will need #100,000 plus for electricity in a month.

Good for nothing institutions in Nigeria that only know how to generate their own cheap electricity on papers.

Call them now to explain how power can be generated from laughter you will hear big big grammar of its possibility.....in reality zero cheesy

Will you like them to increase school fees to a million naira ?

You think generation power for a university is cheap ?

Ideally, universities should be at the forefront of renewable energy adoption but it's a country where people don't practice what they preach.

I just dey laugh you.
Before April 2024, their electricity bill was #80m/month which the university have been paying without owing. Due to band issues and increase of electricity from #66 per kwh to #225 per kwh, the price rose from #80m in March to #280m in April. If this kind of thing happened to your personal company, will you feel the impact? Uniben is saying the price should be reduced so they can afford to pay. It seems BEDC told them to pay the one they can afford to pay and carry the rest over, but Uniben is refusing that because if they do that, they have accepted the new tariff. This is not issue of owing and prepaid meter, is the issue of the cost. From #66 to #225 not too much?
If your house is in band A and you are being charged #225 per kwh per hour, you would have understand better.
I hope you understand now.

Now, it will take billions of Naira for Uniben to fix solar that can power most of their things.
If you are used to solar, you will agree with me that it's not cheap as people claimed it to be. You will have to change batteries every two years because the more you use, the more the power goes down. Most of the solar panels and batteries in Nigeria are fake.
Let me just rest here.

You should laugh at yourself for not understanding simple English. The institution is owing N280 million electricity bill. If the institution has been using prepaid metres, the institution will not owe N280 million electricity bill.

What are you trying to insinuate? ABU had ABU dam before 2011 and have been self reliant in terms of electricity. When the TETfund act was established in 2011 to repeal the ETF act established in 1993, Every higher institution got their fair share of the funds. Below is an excerpt from TETfund webpage:

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) was originally established as Education Trust Fund (ETF) by the Act No 7 of 1993 as amended by Act No 40 of 1998 (now repealed and replaced with Tertiary Education Trust Fund Act 2011). It is an intervention agency set up to provide supplementary support to all level of public tertiary institutions with the main objective of using funding alongside project management for the rehabilitation, restoration and consolidation of Tertiary Education in Nigeria.

The main source of income available to the Fund is the two percent education tax paid from the assessable profit of companies registered in Nigeria. The Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) assesses collects the tax on behalf of the Fund.

The funds are disbursed for the general improvement of education in federal and state tertiary educations specifically for the provision or maintenance of:
*Essential physical infrastructure for teaching and learning
*Instructional material and equipment
*Research and publications
*Academic staff training and development and
*Any other need which, in the opinion of the Board of Trustees, is critical and essential for the improvement and maintenance of standards in the higher educational institutions.

So why build a new renewable energy sources for schools or cities when we the government can embezzled the funds and keep it safe for dia generation to come...
