96ACE: The solar project at ABU (and UI) are government funded projects through TETFund in collaboration with a German firm. Most Tertiary institutions in Nigeria have energy development plans, but the issue is funding and approvals. There are tertiary institutions that have developed better and cheaper electricity prepaid metres, but no funding and support. There are others that are ready to develop mini hydro power stations, but government refused approval. 1 Like |

turmacs: The truth is that they didn't use 280 million naira power. 80 million naira in March, 280 million naira in April!! All of us in Nigeria classified as band A are facing the same issue, just that institutions like universities will be on a far bigger scale. We didn't have power supply for 48 hours straight, band A customers! The light they brought three days ago had spoilt my "follow come" phone charger, expensive charger for that matter, band A light be dat o! This fraud shouldn't be allowed to stand 2 Likes |

immortalcrown:It seems you guys don't read news before responding. Electricity per kwh per hour was increased from #66 to #225. Is that not a big difference? That's almost 500% increase. If their electricity bill was #80m/Month before, it's now #280m. How do you expect institution like Uniben to cope with this geometric increase? Now, if it persists, the university will be left with no other option than to increase school charges to meet up since subvention fund from the government hasn't increased. You think this is an issue of prepaid meter? It seems you don't know the issue of this band. People forcefully categorized as band A have disconnected from BEDC source because they will need #100,000 plus for electricity in a month. 1 Like |

Unigrad:You are the one that responds to comments without understanding the comments. I said why is the institution not using prepaid metres. If the institution is using prepared metres, the institution will not owe electricity bill because of the hike in electricity tariff. 1 Like |

Ideally, universities should be at the forefront of renewable energy adoption but it's a country where people don't practice what they preach. 1 Like |

immortalcrown:I just dey laugh you. Before April 2024, their electricity bill was #80m/month which the university have been paying without owing. Due to band issues and increase of electricity from #66 per kwh to #225 per kwh, the price rose from #80m in March to #280m in April. If this kind of thing happened to your personal company, will you feel the impact? Uniben is saying the price should be reduced so they can afford to pay. It seems BEDC told them to pay the one they can afford to pay and carry the rest over, but Uniben is refusing that because if they do that, they have accepted the new tariff. This is not issue of owing and prepaid meter, is the issue of the cost. From #66 to #225 not too much? If your house is in band A and you are being charged #225 per kwh per hour, you would have understand better. I hope you understand now. 3 Likes |

victorVIC1:Now, it will take billions of Naira for Uniben to fix solar that can power most of their things. If you are used to solar, you will agree with me that it's not cheap as people claimed it to be. You will have to change batteries every two years because the more you use, the more the power goes down. Most of the solar panels and batteries in Nigeria are fake. Let me just rest here. 1 Like |

ivandragon: What are you trying to insinuate? ABU had ABU dam before 2011 and have been self reliant in terms of electricity. When the TETfund act was established in 2011 to repeal the ETF act established in 1993, Every higher institution got their fair share of the funds. Below is an excerpt from TETfund webpage: The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) was originally established as Education Trust Fund (ETF) by the Act No 7 of 1993 as amended by Act No 40 of 1998 (now repealed and replaced with Tertiary Education Trust Fund Act 2011). It is an intervention agency set up to provide supplementary support to all level of public tertiary institutions with the main objective of using funding alongside project management for the rehabilitation, restoration and consolidation of Tertiary Education in Nigeria. The main source of income available to the Fund is the two percent education tax paid from the assessable profit of companies registered in Nigeria. The Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) assesses collects the tax on behalf of the Fund. The funds are disbursed for the general improvement of education in federal and state tertiary educations specifically for the provision or maintenance of: *Essential physical infrastructure for teaching and learning *Instructional material and equipment *Research and publications *Academic staff training and development and *Any other need which, in the opinion of the Board of Trustees, is critical and essential for the improvement and maintenance of standards in the higher educational institutions. |

So why build a new renewable energy sources for schools or cities when we the government can embezzled the funds and keep it safe for dia generation to come... |
