Closure of Banex Plaza.

The fracas that occurred last Saturday at the vibrant Banex Plaza business area in Abuja between some military personnel and traders has led to a one-week closure of the ever busy business precinct.

This incident and it’s disruptive aftermath is yet another manifestation of the growing tension and intolerance in our nation. It is a matter of grave concern about the present state of unease and growing tension between civilians and our security operatives especially the military.

The recent increase in the frequency of these brushes cannot be unconnected with the stressful situation in the country due to economic hardship , insecurity and spiraling poverty. Already our security operatives are overstretched, deeply upset and agitated like the rest of the populace. Whatever may have triggered this particular friction and violence, the recourse to vandalism and violence cannot serve both civilians and the military well.

An indefinite closure of the business premises is not a wise option. It will deepen the present hardship both for the traders and business owners as well as the general public whom they serve.

The economic implications of the prolonged closure of such a vibrant business environment are far-reaching considering the number of people whose livelihoods depend largely on the day-to-day activities at the plaza.

Both the government and military authorities should be concerned about the growing friction between civilians and security personnel and take the necessary steps to end it.

In every country troops are loved by the people because of the critical role they play in protecting and ensuring peace in the land. I desire no less for our dear country.

I would like therefore to urge the immediate reopening of the plaza for business activities.
This should be followed by dialogue and renewed confidence building initiatives to avert a repeat. -PO

This is a recipe for anarchy. Unfortunately, FG & heads of security agencies seem not to be doing anything to put an end to it. Occupying communities & business areas further heightens tension between security agents & civilians.

The government is known for irrational decisions. They can't condemn the anarchy that placed them in power.

Peter Obi is a confirmed dullard. FG should wait till they start killing people before taking action because of hardship. The same security personnel that will provide security for lives and properties are the one involved directly.

Politicians need to put these soldiers in their place before they take over this country with their janj.aweed leadership style.

Who gave soldiers the constitutional rights to shut down that plaza?

The military is gradually taking the place of the police in this country.

Allow the police to investigate who attacked your officers and deal with them according to provisions of the law.

What the banex boys did was wrong, the military is now using a wrong solution for the wrong problem, which will lead to more people in the streets, more unrest, more work for security agents more problem for Nigeria

The People's President has spoken shocked

Nigeria 🇳🇬 is just a lawless country, how will you push everybody into pains just because of some arrogant few? No investigation to fish out the culprits, then you think the better approach is to close down the entire place? undecided

Lawless country for a reason!

totally unacceptable.

That plaza is a macrocosm of Nigeria - the only difference is there is no tribal and ethnic difference there, they all see themselves as brothers, the hausa, igbos, yorubas, and various other tribes there. i dont know how they achieved that unity.

IF YOU COME TO THAT PLAZA AND TOUCH ANY ONE OF THEM, THE ENTIRE PLAZA WILL ATTACK YOU.

Those soldiers thought because its an igbo man shop they can bully him only for the abokis in that area that doesn't fear uniform to jumb on them and beat shege commot for their yansh! not minding the screams from the igbos for them to stop beating soldiers!

How soldiers are now taking over police in Nigeria is surprising these days.

How can u be a judge in ur case, that is what the Nigerian army has resorted to these days.

An incidence happened in a Plaza between ur men and some civilians, police came and resolved the problem, yet they all refused to grant the police access to investigate the matter rather, they locked up the entire plaza and left the people to wallow in economy distress.

I wonder if we are in democracy or military regime.
