How many Nigerians have pressure cookers in their kitchens?
Do they even know such an appliance exists?
Anyway, the pressure cooker is the best solution to the Op's dilemma.

Good day Nairalanders, I have a little problem. I bought some cowskin(ponmo) few days back. They are not so soft, at least to my satisfaction. I've been soaking it in water since I bought it but no significant change has happened. Are there ways I can make them soft? I mean very soft. Are there things I can add to it. Your responses are highly appreciated.

Soaking it in water
You didn't mentioned boiling. How about boiling it with onions and a a little salt.
Pressure pot will do a better justice to it if you have one.

Nail? Explain pls, and is this not risky health wise?

Nail acts as a catalyst. Simple chemistry. Though no impact on health

Use pressure cooker.

10 mins your ponmo will be so soft. Even a baby without teeth can chew it.

Stop cooking meat with salt.
In the absence of a pressure pot, cook your meat/ponmo without salt. Only put in salt when it is 85% done to lock the flavour.

There are two types you will find out there. The one from the male cow is usually the soft one cos male cows are usually not reared for long they're easily replaced.
The one from the female cows are tougher because they are used to breed so are kept longer. By the time they're slaughtered it's in their old age that makes the skin tough.
Simple
Thanks for this wonderful piece of info... We learn new things everyday.

Surprisingly, after eating these, you'll come out to join those who laugh at Obavoh and mock him for not eating good food.

These "ponmo" has no nutritional value and are pure waste of money.

Anyone who's eating them is simply wasting his money and eating far poorly than our dear Obavoh does.

It would be far better and rewarding to "dash" the money out

Animal skins are not meant to be eaten

Just fry it in palm oil or cooking oil for like 20 Minutes . so it will be very hard then put it inside your stew after a while you will shocked that the pomo will be soft.
that is how I do mine and it even tastes sweeter

It's the perfect solution - no alum, potash, or any such weird recommendations. Just stick them in the pot and time it. Cuts the time by half or 3/5, thereby saving gas/fuel.

There are not-so-expensive aluminium types in the market, so a salary earner could save for it, knowing it'd save them gas money in the long run.

To be honest , if not because we consume everything consumable, we should not be eating Ponmo at all .
We can create a thriving leather industry in the south if we just find something cheaper to eat.
But, we all understand sha. In all you do, don't use potash , it's bad for your health .
Use a pressure pot or throw the damn thing away sad

People just love ponmo, not because of lack of protein. Egg is cheaper than ponmo.

Use small baking soda.
Baking soda is what chefs uses to soften meat all over the world and also reduce cooking time.
Just a teaspoon is OK.
I use it to parboil beans. Wash and cook.
