Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said that President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies have created a hostile environment for businesses, both big and small, to thrive.

He added that the private sector is overwhelmed by the president’s economic policies and burdened by his failure to address the policy fallout.

“The manufacturing sector, which holds the key to higher incomes, jobs, and economic growth, has been bogged down by rising input prices, higher energy and borrowing costs, and exchange rate complexities,” Atiku said on Tuesday in a statement made available to PUNCH Online.

The former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party recommended six economic rescue strategies for the economy under Tinubu.

My boss colluded with external parties to rob our workplace, but I went to prison for it – Ex-inmate0.00 / 0.00

He said, “First, pause and reflect. It is important that the government understands what reforms must be undertaken and in what sequence. A framework is needed with clearly stated reform objectives and strategies.

“Second, undertake a comprehensive review of the 2024 budget within the new reform framework. The 2024 FGN Budget, the exact size of which remains a mystery, is not designed to address the structural defects of the Nigerian economy or the cost-of-living crisis. It will neither create prosperity nor promote opportunities for our young people to lead a productive life.

“Third, undertake a comprehensive review of the Social Investment Programme (SIP) to mitigate some of the impacts of these policies on the most vulnerable households. The SIP must go beyond Conditional Cash Transfers to include programmes that prioritise support to MSEs across all economic sectors, as they offer the greatest opportunities for achieving inclusive growth.

“In addition, a holistic programme to support medium and large-scale enterprises to navigate the stormy seas in the aftermath of the withdrawal of subsidy on PMS is also needed.”

He added that Tinubu must be cautioned against any attempt to further pauperise the poor by introducing new taxes or increasing tax rates.

He said, “We are aware of the behind-the-scenes attempts to increase the VAT rate from 7.5% to 10%, reintroduce excise on telecommunication, and increase excise rates on a range of goods.

“Fifth, provide clarity on the fuel subsidy regime, including the fiscal commitments and benefits from the fuel subsidy reform and the impact of this on the Federation Accounts. It is curious that since April 2024, fuel queues have mounted at many filling stations across Nigeria, and the infamous ‘black market’ has sprouted in several states. How much PMS is being imported and distributed, and at what cost? What is the implicit subsidy?

“Tackle security headlong. President Tinubu, as a matter of priority, needs to rejig the nation’s security architecture as what is currently in place is not serving the needs of the people. The state of pervasive insecurity continues to adversely impact agricultural production and the value it brings to the economy, especially in the Northern parts of the country.”

Will he heed to these wonderful strategies?

Because it's now obvious that Tinubu is a notorious dullard. His cluelessness is legendary.

In the 12 months that President Tinubu has been in office, an overwhelming majority of Nigerians will readily agree that the president had taken Nigeria to the brink of total economic meltdown to which there appears to be no way out. All the pegs of his economic policy have proven to be contradictory, dysfunctional and disastrous to the economic and social health of the country.

The devaluation and floating of the naira has proven to be yet another disastrous policy. The business environment has proven tough for both medium and large enterprises as a result of the high cost of fuel, leading to the collapse of many of them. The outlook is that many more will collapse in the coming months as the situation bites harder.

The evident failure of its economic policies has exposed the incompetence and cluelessness of the Tinubu administration. There is an adage which says if you find yourself in a hole, you stop digging. But in its state of self-inflicted desperation, the Tinubu administration has instead chosen to pile more misery on Nigerians who are now watching it balefully. The administration has resorted to taxing and levying the already overburdened Nigerians.

Atiku is the main opposition. He plays the opposition without bitterness. Kudos to him. He is the only candidate I can vote if Tinubu messes up by 2027.

One annoying thing about these politicians is the unsolicited advice they tend to give after leaving office with little or nothing to show. After turning Aso rock into a boxing ring with his boss, corruption at all levels, sales of public assets to friends and cronies, worst form of electoral processes and conducts, $16billion stolen electricity fund, siemens scandal, no refineries, brazen impeachment of governors, third term agenda, festering of bokoharam and establishment of sharia and numerous others, PDP failed and Anyone associated to that party either formerly or currently should remain silent forever!

Fair enough. Still within the opposition right to criticize constructively like this.

O ti su Atiku grin grin grin

We all know why Tinubu's policies are bitting hard...

He is implementing two very key hard decisions at the same time..

- Removal of fuel subsidy
-Unification of the multiple exchange rates.

Funny enough, all these foreign organisations like IMF, World Bank and the likes were pressing our government to make these policies...now that the policies have caused loads of hardship, they are changing mouth.

Well, for me, President Tinubu should hretrace his steps and reverse one of these policies...we know they are inevitable, but, do it one at a time.

Let's face fuel subsidy first, while you keep defending the Naira to lower the exchange rates..so, that prices of goods and services can come down.

With all the promises of refineries coming up, we hope we have reduced pump price of fuel..then, afterwards, you can implement the unification of exchange rate and stop defending the Naira.

Facing these twk policies at the same time is just monumental hardships everywhere.

This is my own lay man opinion

Tinubu does not understand business policies that can create and sustain a business because he has not ran a successful business before.

What does the Jaujau man know? When his blind supporters were hiping him during elections, after deceiving them he was the one who made lagos, claiming the glory of all his predecessors and his successors as his, including our street that we tarred with asphalt and the transformer we jointly bought and erected in our CDA, I told them they'd soon see the real tinubu and his weaknesses. His loss in same Lagos which he claimed to be a case study was enough proof he doesn't measure up.

Who propaganda epp? In lagos, you could tell some lies and your men would cover you up. Nigeria is bigger than lagos. Before you sneezed, you're already noticed. Your lies can't be covered for too long
