But statistically, this is just one player from a squad of 26. This XG does not translate to more than 1/26th of each sample size. Therefore your extrapolation is wrong.

If you are to measure approximate XG per player in each squad, average XG per squad may drop down to 0.2, making it the generally acceptable XG for penalties across the board.

Previously only the best teams in each league played great football. The mid table teams were mostly pragmatic.

Nowadays, even relegation cadre teams play great which tends to soften the pain of defeats for the fans. And this is mostly due to Pep's influence.

In Germany Ralf Rangnick influenced their style of play with his gengen pressing which he adapted from Sachi and one Dynamo Kyiev coach.
Also, Germany invested heavily in coaches and players development which brought about significant improvement in the quality 9f players produced.
In France there's Clairefontaine Training Centre where talented players from France are selected for camping and training.
In England there was serious investment in academy football in the early to mid 2000s and continuing till date, this resulted in more technical players being churned out by top academies.

I'm not referring to 80s or 90s vs now. Small EPL teams in the 2000s already had lots of money even more than some big teams in other top leagues.

It's a matter of coaching. The Villa team I referenced had John Carew, prime Ashley Young, Lilian Petrov, Stephen Ireland, Stewart Downing who were quite good or at least decent players. If they were coached today, they'd play at a much higher level.
