The quest of Ogun State to be an oil producing State would soon materialize as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), sets to begin oil and gas exploration in the Gateway State.
Stakeholders in the oil industry, including the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, Managing Director, SHELL Petroleum Development Company Ltd, Mr. Osagie Okubor; Chief Executive, Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Engr. Gbenga Komolafe and the Group Chief Executive Officer, NNPC Ltd, Mr Mele Kyari, stormed Ogun State on Friday on plans by the Federal Government to start oil exploration in the state.
They were received by Governor Dapo Abiodun and his Deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele.
Hon. Lokpobiri, who spoke at the governor’s office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta said Ogun State has always been part of the Dahomey Basin with prospect of having huge deposit of hyrdro-carbon.
The Minister said: “We decided that we are going to resume exploration in the different Basins; we decided to come to Ogun State to reassure the people that we have very high potential of discoveries here. Ogun has always been part of the Dahomey Basin and our presence underscore the seriousness the federal government attaches to the exploration activities that we want to carry out in Ogun State.”
Hon. Lokpobiri who added that oil and gas remain the quickest way to Nigeria’s economic prosperity, said his team is in the State in continuation of the campaign for exploration activities.
He said the visit was also to demonstrate the seriousness and commitment of the federal government to shore up its revenue through the oil and gas sector.
“Today we are here to tell the people of the federal government’s commitment to ensuring that we continue our campaign and exploration activities across the country. We are doing this exploration activities in several places across Nigeria and today we are in Ogun after which we will proceed to Sokoto State,” he added
The Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited,(NNPCL) Mr. Mele kyari, while speaking, said Ogun State is blessed to be in the Dahomey Basin corridor with expected high deposit of oil, assuring that the corporation is coming back in ernest to commence exploration activities, even as he expressed the hope that oil would be found in commercial quantity.
In his remarks, the Executive Director, Nigerians Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Mr. Gbenga Komolafe, said the coming of the team to Ogun State is to further demonstrate the commitment of the Federal Government to grow the oil reserves and enhanced federation revenue.
“We all understand that Nigeria is very prolific in oil and gas, but then there is still need to grow the reserves through exploration activities given our huge hyrdro-carbon as a bench mark,” he noted.
Komolafe informed that the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) makes provision for the funding of the development of the Frontier Basins, adding that in line with the commitment and the aspirations of the government, the Nigerian Petroleum Regulatory Commission is working in synergy with the NNPCL to leverage on the PIA to aggressively carry out oil exploration in the Dahomey Basin.
“The Dahomey Basin stretches up to Delta, Edo, Ogun and Ondo states. We intend to in the course of this exercise, cover all those states leveraging on the provision of Section 9, Subsection 4 of the PIA.This is good opportunity for the people of Ogun State and it would be complementary to the reforms and transformation initiatives of the governor. We want to congratulate the governor and the people for being the beneficiaries of this initiative,” Komolafe said.
Responding, Governor Abiodun said Ogun State is part of the OPLs 302,303 306, 307, saying the acreages present unique opportunities for the qualification as a Frontier Exploration State as defined in the PIA section 9.
He observed that the history and studies over the years allow any investment under the frontier exploration basin funding to not only realize the oil and gas potentials, but also acquire data that would aid Bitumen exploration and exploitation in Nigeria.
The country, Abiodun maintained holds the second largest resolves in the world of 42,b tons, adding that a lot of studies have shown the potential of the basins, which brings Ogun State to the fore and projecting it towards becoming a beneficiary to achieve commercial success and derive economic benefits from exploration and production within a minimum time schedule.
“It is noteworthy that this is a region of the country that provides ease of access, low entry and operating costs, a safe and welcoming community and a very active state government support and participation.
“Ogun State therefore presents some unique opportunities towards the realization of the full intentions of the PIA section 9 on frontier exploration as it will contribute to guarantee additional petroleum production of additional petroleum products for the country and afford more supply to potential refineries in the area.
“As a low hanging result, this area also presents the opportunity for Bitumen extraction, thereby reducing import dependency and bringing with its savings in foreign exchange expenditure on this single line item,” governor said.

There's NOTHING like Delta Ibo. What you have in that area of Delta North is a large number of communities founded within the last 800 years by migrants from Edo groups as Bini-Edo, Esan-Edo, Yoruba (Olukumis), Igalas, Nri. The great Anioma son who was in a active service for the Catholic church in Igbuzo (formerly called Ibusa) during the Nigerian Civil War, Reverend Father Kunirun Osia in an interview he granted to Emeka Esogbue shortly before he passed said CLEARLY that it is WRONG for misinformed people right from the colonial era until of recent to erroneously continue to refer to ALL indigenes of Anioma as Ibos or Delta Ibos, because ALL Anioma indigenes came from multiple ethnic groups.Kunirun Osia was an indigene of Obamkpa in Aniocha North LGA of Delta State which the same LGA that the Olukumi towns or community are located close to Onicha Ugbo, and Isele Uku in the same Delta North. |

I don't think that the gully erosion in the SE has to do with oil and gas extraction in the SS and SE. It's largely because of indiscriminate deforestation and poor building/ road construction planning.but if you have any interesting academic journal on it, please share.
The oil producing states have been receiving massive compensation and still does if you see the huge revenue allocations to them every month. They are not being creative and honest with the money they receive because the political will supports such corrupt system. It is up to the people from those areas to hold their leaders accountable. If they don't, trust me, the oil and gas extraction industry is not what failed their future, it is their past, current and future leaders.
Oil producing state leaders are supposed to be investing massively in agriculture , education, environmental conservation, not building long stretches of roads, multiple bridges, massive houses etc as they are currently doing in sandfilled towns they create by destroying the little fauna and flora which serves as natural buffer and protection between them and massive flooding in the future. It has happened in Otuoke where HE GEJ destroyed a largely substantial part of their natural forest environment to build a Federal university, FMC, military formations, estates, bridges, roads etc. The environment gets so flooded that even he could hardly live comfortably in his house in Otuoke, Ogbia , Bayelsa state.
What is the point in building structures that will one day go underwater especially after the oil would have significantly dwindled. Smh Buildings of any form - roads to houses - did not cause the modern day gully erosion problems in the SE region. Oil exploitation did. Do a research to see how. The oil producing areas of the Niger delta region redeive a pittance from the resources in their immediate vicinity. The difficult terrain of the Niger delta region necessecitates more percentage than what is given from derivation so far. Mich of the proceeds from oil is funnelled to the old Northern region through proliferation of 20 new federating units in the old Northern region but a meagre number of 17 states in the two southern regions. Land mass or population figures is NEVER used as yardstick to proliferate too many states or regions in an area with larger land mass or population, in a country formed by different regions. The 36 states political structure created by northern military dictators who created 20 states in one region but 17 states for 2 regions, remains the hugest FRAUD about Nigeria. The oil producing areas of the Niger delta region should have become like Dubai if not that the proceeds of oil from the Niger delta region is denied the region. |

People, why are you falling for a story that is more of an illusion than reality? I don't know if there are any carbon deposits in the southwest but from my experience there are none. why did I say this? 1. Exploration for Carbon deposits is a very expensive endeavor and I don't think Nigeria government at present has the money to do that. Valero an oil company in Texas, I once wrote a cost roll-up program for one of their well in the Permian Basin of Texas. Just setting up one exploration deck was over $20m. This was on a land, not some offshore place. Imagine spending $20m with no assurance of striking oil. 2. None of the Big Oil companies are involved in this project which tells me they don't think there are any deposits worth exploring. I hope I am wrong. |

But the fact that the refinery built in Lagos State by Dangote was suppose to have been situated in Tongeji island in Ikpokia, but for the greediness of a former Ogun State Governor. That only should tell you what sits beneath that part of the State alone. Ogun State is immensely blessed with huge deposits of untapped natural resources. But I would rather the State leverage on its agricultural strength, however, as always, Nigerians like shortcuts to doing things, while the people are never patient enough to reap the benefits of long term developmental and economic plans, the various govts look for quick fixes to things. Governors don't like to invest in projects that won't yield until they are out of government, for the fear of abandonment by subsequent governments and not taking the full glory and reaping the financial result. Oil and Gas leaves blood and crisis at Its wake at the host community. 2 Likes |
