Ofunaofu:maybe some of you think only civil servants are the ones in employment. You people don't consider the private sector. How many companies can pay 100k minimum wage with all the challenges they are facing in trying to stay afloat in business. |

seunmsg: If labour's demand is unreasonable and unrealistic, is FG's proposal reasonable considering the rate of inflation in the country. Not more than 100k you are talking is not also reasonable at all, you check out na: how much is a bag of rice, how much is a paint bucket of garri, bean, tomatoes 🍅, pepper 🫑, onion 🧅, what of yam ? All these are basic food items needed in the family, how would 100k provide these for a family of 4 in a month in this present Nigeria? We have not talked of other bills in families. As for me the minimum wage should not be anything less than 250k. |

Ofunaofu:politics has really blinded your sense of reasoning, no doubt. In the first place, is minimum wage your take home pay? When they say 30k minimum wage, who goes home with 30k as civil servants in Nigeria? If minimum wage is 60k, the least paid worker take home pay can get to 130k to 150k. If you haven't be employed before don't fool yourself with your kindergarten analysis. |
Re: FG Rejects ₦494,000 Wage Demand, Warns Of ₦9.5 Trillion Economic Burden by Omenlon: 8:57am On Jun 02 |
siaco:if you peg minimum wage to 250k, what will be the take home pay of the worker? Some of you don't even know what is minimum wage and take home pay. Besides, have you consider the private sector? How many private establishment can pay 250 as a take home pay not to talk of minimum wage. How much do you pay for your children school fees that you will expect the proprietor to pay his teachers 250k a month. |

jamafa: One year ago when he assumed office, naira was 650 to dollars, today it is over 1500 (more than double). So if you save for a year, your purchasing power is equal to someone taking 56% of you total sweat. Not a bad idea to dump the naira that is killing people. Yes, the pending inflation is giving me nightmares. Unionized civil servants would never give up their easy jobs (why most don't fit in the private sectors or business, especially after retirement). |

Comments like this are disheartening. This is a negotiation bro. Government will be foolish to pay 400k, but if the country can afford it, why not? Our annual budget is 27.5Trillion. Government should be reasonable in their proposal. 100-120k would be at least a manageable figure. They should also plug their excesses, their body language should show that we're all in this together. Not importing cars worth billions on borrowed money when there are local alternatives, choking everyone with taxes and all. No family (family of 3) can survive 1 week on 60k even if you live in the village. helinues: |

kingreign: U are the one being foolish, so even if the executive and legislatives slash their salaries, will that be enough to pay 494,000 to level 1 salary earners. What about level 16 earners for all ministries, department and government agencies. Or u think they will all be earning 494,000. . I shake my head in despair. |
Re: FG Rejects ₦494,000 Wage Demand, Warns Of ₦9.5 Trillion Economic Burden by adejades: 10:34am On Jun 02 |
You should educate yourself on the concept of minimum pay rather than throw words you do not understand. Yes, organizations are supposed to pay people using the minimum wage as a benchmark. In the private sector which is unregulated, some pay their new staff in some junior roles the exact minimum wage, no addition (like security, cleaners etc). Some of them even pay below. I have seen cleaners earn 20k as salary as at today!!! Is that not wicked? The current request by labour is negotiable. Govt. should meet them somewhere, 60k is nothing to write home about. Inflation is already out there, caused by govt. and their policies, why should the average worker be the one to suffer? Atiku, Obi, Tinubu, they are all the same!!! Pay people what is due or go to hell, wicked politicians across all levels!!! Omenlon: |

Don't you think their (OPS) fight should be with the government and their policies and not minimum wage. Why should the average man always be asked to manage and continue suffering while others feed off them? Omenlon: |

Just last month, my tfare from Berger to Ikoyi, not even Lekki to and fro was over 75k. No feeding yet, rentage, family upkeep, etc Sometimes, I just laugh when people talk. As at 2014, if you earn 60k, you're doing well cos even 50kg rice was below 15k. So, your family can feed fine and also save for the future. Fast forward to this day, if you earn less than 250k, you're a pauper. The question is, how many Nigerian workers are being paid up to 250k monthly? What labour is asking for isn't unrealistic. If in 2014, a litre of PMS was N89 and now, it's over N600, please do the percentage increase on that commodity alone, so, why should the earnings not be proportional. Go check out budget then and now, check the percentage increase in our National budget, but, when it comes to buying salaries, the workers are always told to sacrifice. As we speak, Nigeria is embarking on a road project of over N15tr |

Labour should be realistic with it's demand, 494k demand for minimum wage is not possible and they know that. Fg should step up at least 80 to 100k. Embarking on strike action wouldn't solve the already existing problem. As labour union is fighting for it's pocket, who will fight for the traders and the common men who are not part of labour union? |

Let the FG float the minimum wage. Let it be floating along with the fluctuations in FX and price of gasolin3/diesel. You can t float those other components of the economy and leave minimum wage stagnant..who does that? |
Re: FG Rejects ₦494,000 Wage Demand, Warns Of ₦9.5 Trillion Economic Burden by triplechoice(m): 11:10am On Jun 02 |
seunmsg: Minimum wage is not for all private businesses in Nigeria. There are lot of exemptions in the private sector. So not all of them pay it. Private businesses with less than 25 staff in their payroll are exempted from paying. You have called the 494k unrealistic. But what of government's 60k? Is that one realistic to you? |
Re: FG Rejects ₦494,000 Wage Demand, Warns Of ₦9.5 Trillion Economic Burden by triplechoice(m): 11:21am On Jun 02 |
Omenlon: Only a few in the private sector are paying minimum wage in Nigeria and that's because of the exemption most of them enjoy under the law. Some large scale enterprise are already paying more than 100k to their lowest paid staff: those in the oil and gas , communications |
