In a bid to avert the planned nationwide strike, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the leadership of the Nigeria Governors Forum have invited the leadership of the Organized Labour for an emergency meeting Tonight, sources familiar with the matter told our correspondent on Sunday Afternoon.

“A meeting has been summoned by the senate president and the Nigeria Governors Forum. The meeting will be held Tonight,” a highly knowledgeable source said.

On Friday, the Nigeria Labour Congress declared an indefinite nationwide strike, starting on Monday, June 3, 2024, due to the Federal Government’s refusal to increase the proposed minimum wage above N60,000.

The President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, announced that the strike followed failed negotiations between the government and organised labour.

Despite the government’s final offer of N60,000, which included a recent increase from an initial N57,000, the labour unions found the proposal insufficient.

At the meeting, labour revised its demand, reducing it by N3,000 from the initial N497,000 proposed last week, setting the new proposal at N494,000.

Despite this concession, the negotiations remained deadlocked as the government maintained its offer of N60,000, leading to the declaration of a nationwide indefinite strike.

Labour should not rescind their decision to go on strike.

This strike must hold.

Left to FG, they can pay N100k convincingly but you see those governors heh, well this new minimum wage would exposed some of their charades.

We go see if all those who donated billions for pilgrim go talk say they can't afford the new minimum wage

The Governors are having a good laugh at labour union, as at the last meeting no Governor was present. Can you force the Governors to pay the proposed 60k?. A state like Abia could not pay the old 18k minimum wage and nobody could raise a voice. How could they afford 60k or a little above.

The government is not serious at all.

While I understand that the labour unions are not making reasonable demands, the government has been far from reasonable with their own offers too.

At best, I will term the government offers as utterly ridiculous.

You claimed to be earning far more in revenue, yet, no one feels the impacts.

The government at both national and sub national are having ovetbloated workforce.

No palliative for one year since this suffering began.

Anything less than a 100k, the strike should hold.

Tinubu, I didn't vote for you to make people suffer.

If obi or atiku had done this, this is what my comment will be.

I'm not a hypocrite.

If the union should collect bribe to call off this strike, may they die miserably.

Crime rate is on the high side because the purchasing power of people is getting decreasing on the daily basis.

It's either you pay people reasonably or build more prisons.

Low wage is directly promotional to high level corruption and crime rates.

Imagine the Nigerian army personnel getting meagre 50k as monthly pay, why won't they protect the oil bunkers instead of arresting the perpetrators? If boko haram members offer them irresistible offers in millions, won't they sell them arms and ammunition of the government?

What about the police, civil defence, public service, civil service, medical personnel etc?

The story is the same everywhere.

That is why only the elite are working with the cbn and firs.

People always say how would the fg be able to finance the increase in minimum wage but have forgotten this same fg wud quickly bring up flimsy coastal road projects and approve without thinking, allow for billions of naira to be approved for buying cars for the senate etc and other unjustifiable spendings. My question is what is the basic amount a family of five can spend on feeding in this present era? How will they survive on 60k? It's just unthinkable and unfathomable. We all know there will be inflation if minimum wage increases but fg shud just increase it tremendously first or return petrol back to it's old price.

Joe Ajaero of NLC is very stupid. If an oil producing state like Abia cannot pay the paltry sum of 30k minimum wage, how will anybody be able to pay 400k minimum wage? The dwarf is just using NLC as a labour party offshoot to destabilize the country.

Labor should insist on 497k , demand #150k first, give Federal government 6 months-1 yr to stabilize the Naira and fuel ⛽️ to a reasonable price. If after 1 yrs those conditions are not met then they add another 100k to the 150k.

If government succeeds by bringing $ &⛽️ Prices , Then the minimum wage should remain at that # 150k , meaning things will get cheaper . In other to avoid inflation.
