4. Avoid Driving Too Quickly or Slowly

Your engine has to work hard to overcome wind resistance when traveling down a highway. At 100 km/hr and 110 km/hr, respectively, you’ll consume up to 15% and 25% more petrol. That should entice you to drive slowly, but doing so would cause your engine to shift into a lower gear and use more fuel. Therefore, it is preferable to maintain a constant speed of within 50 to 90 km/hr when on the highway to get the optimum fuel economy.

Driving 40km twice daily is quite a lot though! But from the calculations I did from the numbers you gave - your Camry's consumption is approximately 18L/100km (Europe) or 13 mpg (America) which is frankly speaking quite crappy. You should take it to another mechanic to get a second opinion as you've said already that the catalyst is intact & exhaust isn't leaking. I honestly can't tell you what the issue might be.

Trust me, I understand how biting the money being spent can be, nah so Naija dey make allufus dey kaku... Good luck.

Get the car properly scanned first and see what error code is causing this issue….a faulty O2 sensor is one of the most notorious fuel guzzler in most modern vehicles

To and fro is about 80km right? Is there traffic on your route? Do you drive aggressively? This questions will help solve your issue.

There is no real traffic, the one we encounter is usually mild and you can't stay in it for more than 5 to 10 minutes. I won't consider myself an aggressive driver,my speed is between 60 to 90kh ...

Toyota camry( Big daddy) is not fuel efficient as people normally think. Nothing is wrong with your car. 80km journey isn't a small distance. 10k of fuel @#690/litre is just around 14 litres if at all the pump hasn't be altered. Most fueling stations sell 0.8L as 1L. I repeat, your car fuel consumption is perfectly okay.
Also, the high price we now buy fuel is giving us an impression that vehicles consume fuel more. Imagine, before emilokan govt, 2,500k fuel would have covered you for the same distance. I use the same car (4 valves) and I know what I'm saying.
