It is 2024, why should I teach a two year old child his/her native language?

Slavery mentality.

Teach your kids your native language first before other languages.

What of a case where they were born abroad. Who will they speak it with apart from family members? How will it aid their interactions with white people?

Being born abroad is not a yardstick not to learn or speak your native language.

Nwanyiocha(a swiss citizen) taught her children how to speak and understand Igbo language even before they relocated back to Nigeria.

They relocated. Now, I ask again, children born abroad with no plan of ever visiting the country — what do they need their native language for?

They relocated few months ago.

Children born abroad with no plan of ever visiting their homeland are not worthy to be a topic for discussion.

Now, in a Nigerian state where everyone speaks Ijaw, what benefit would a Yoruba speaker enjoy?

A Yoruba speaker may engage in a Yoruba class to teach the Ijaw speakers how to speak Yoruba language.

We have Igbo and Yoruba teachers in Chinese schools.

A lot of the arguments above are flawed.

Language is identity. Apart from color and development, language was the only thing that separated us from colonizers during those times.

How would you feel if you meet a Chinese and then discover that he cannot actually speak the language?

The fact that English language is widely accepted does not mean that it is the best thing after slightly burnt smoky jollof rice. 😎 I see a lot of Nigerians giving their children foreign names to make them look sophisticated. They also prevent them from learning their native languages. Their eyes will open in years to come.

Rather than not teach your kids their native language, simply avoid giving birth!
In anything you do, never deny your kids their identity. The River that forget its source don't just get lost; they dry up!

Open to the importance of the language of their origin.

Honestly, I feel one’s native tongue is overrated. I will create children capable of surviving in an international world. Nigerian native languages will limit them to conquering their own region, not even the whole country.

This topic is apt. I love the guy that wrote a physics text in igbo. Granted that teaching a child native grrounds the child in your culture. However, i feel it takes out the energy you would have used to teach him skills, languages, science that would impact on his life. We need to use our native language to create value. We are trying that through our music. However, to make it have more impact we need to teach science and maths in our native language

How old are you?
Your reasoning is weird to me.
What happens to your identity?
If I may ask, are you better than the Chinese and Japanese most of them don't speak or understand English, but they are surviving more than you in the international settings.
Pray for intelligent and smart children.

Me and a few work colleagues had a heated debate last week.

I was of the opinion that in 2024, English was the superior language for any citizen. The benefits are too numerous to mention. Nelson Mandela claimed you could appeal to a man’s intellect when communicating, however communicating with him in his mother tongue appeals to his soul. In the same way, since business is international, a Nigerian-bred proficient English speaker can carry out trade hitch-free with Caucasians. At the very least, the Nigerian can scam them — showing that his/her fluency in the language is on par if not superior to theirs.

All of the responses they gave revolved around living in Nigeria while skipping the fact that over 250 ethnic groups already exist. I found them unsatisfactory.

It is 2024, why should I teach a two year old child his/her native language?

Is this a joke or you're just trolling

Mtchewww all this gen z,for the last time LANGUAGE SIGNIFIES IDENTITY, you are not better than the Chinese, German, Italians, etc.if you teach your kids the so called English or whatever.what will be their IDENTITY undecided Ehh ogbeni?
Re: - by arinzos(m): 10:20pm On Jun 06
Teach them your native language. Then teach them English and any other foreign language.
Germans, Italians, Chinese can speak their languages and then English.

Your native Language is your Identity!
