FG moves to suspend nationwide collection of levies on Okada riders, fuel trucks, shops

The president said he was exercising the powers conferred on him by section 5 of the Nigerian constitution.

President Bola Tinubu is considering a six months suspension of the collection of taxes, levies or charges in business of few sectors of the economy.

Recipients of the tax suspension will include Okada riders, transporters of goods, fuel transporters, wheelbarrow and cart pushers, shops owners, market traders, amongst others.

This was contained in a draft executive order titled, “Inflation reduction and price stability (fiscal policy measures, etc.) order 2024, dated May 1, which is aimed at bringing down inflation and the prices of food items across the country.

According to the draft executive order, the president said he was exercising the powers conferred on him by section 5 of the Nigerian constitution (as amended), Section 38 of the Value Added Tax Act, Cap,V1 2004 (as amended), and other powers.

The suspension, the draft order revealed, is for “road haulage tax and any other levy or charges on transportation of goods; bicycle, truck, canoe, wheelbarrow and cart fees.”

Others include: “business premises registration; shops, kiosks, and market taxes and levies; animal trade and produce sales tax; further suspension of VAT and diesel (AGO).”

The draft order also directed that “States and Local Governments shall take appropriate steps to support the implementation of the tax suspension.”

Is draining my haulage business
For example from Mile 2 to Igbesa (Badagry road) my driver pay over 45k,
expect you use military personal as escort you will still but less than 40k

Just last week,I forgot to buy ticket due to the heavy downpour that took place in the morning...... Only for me to come outside with my keke and unfortunately came in contact with some useless agberos cheesy

My question is that--"where do these levies money go to in the first place?

Cuz there's one chairman here in my area who works in the levy collection office....Na so so beer he dey drink every evening,with our hard earned money angry

ok.. then what about the subsidy saved from petrol? Another point is after this thoughtful concern about the levies, who will enforce them? The police that collects bribe forcefully? Or the touts that freely dish out black-eye to the cyclist and drivers? Create state police and local government elections

I was also shocked the day i discovered that wheelbarrow pushers bow pay tax.

I called a wheelbarrow pusher to carry some goods from the truck to my store, only for me to carefully observe the wheelbarrow and discovered there was a number on it. I asked the barrow pusher what the number was for and he said it was placed by govt and that they do pay tax. I was like WTF 😳
