MultiChoice Nigeria says it will appeal the ruling of the competition and consumer protection tribunal (CCPT) after the company was fined N150 million for challenging the court’s jurisdiction.

On Friday, the tribunal fined MultiChoice and ordered the company to provide one-month free subscriptions on DStv and GOtv to Nigerians.

MultiChoice announced an increase in the cost of subscriptions for its DStv and GOtv packages on April 24.

However, on April 29, the tribunal stopped MultiChoice from increasing its tariffs and cost of products and services, which was scheduled to begin on May 1.

MultiChoice challenged the tribunal’s verdict restricting it from increasing the prices of its packages through an application filed on April 30 by Moyosore Onibanjo, the company’s lawyer.

The tribunal, in its ruling on Friday, cited section 39 (2) of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) Act which states the “tribunal shall have jurisdiction throughout the federation and on all commercial activities aimed at making a profit”.

For failing to comply with the order of the tribunal not to implement the price adjustment, Thomas Okosu, who led the three-man tribunal panel, imposed an administrative penalty on Multichoice.

In a statement addressing the order, MultiChoice said it disagrees with the position of the tribunal.

MultiChoice Nigeria is aware of the recent ruling by the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) regarding its jurisdiction to entertain a price regulation matter,” the company said.

We disagree with the ruling, and will therefore file an appeal against said ruling.”

MultiChoice said the company is restrained from making further comments because the matter is currently sub judice.

They Are Not...

They did not ask the majority of Nigerians to vote for an incompetent idiot based on their ethnicity or religion.

They didn't use dark magic to make our economy appear like a madwoman's underwear.

They did not coax the Naira into a doggy posture and then let the Dollar ram her from behind.

When you have an incompetent buffoon in power, things will continue to appear difficult.

Why is the government attacking Multichoice? I'm not really their fan cos I'm part of those paying through my nose to keep enjoying their services.

The problem here isn't from Multichoice but from the government. TV rights are expensive especially Premier League, then when you add multiple taxation and other harsh policies by the government, you'd discover that they too have to keep increasing their subscription rates so as to remain in businesses.

This is what is killing investments in Nigeria. How can any government agency force a business entity to provide free service. Rubbish judgement.

Nice one.

Multichoice is a business. Their product prices are largely a reflection of the current state of the economy and ,under APC most especially, the economy has been in the toilet.

People are just being sentimental about this issue (probably because it's a foreign country) but if you're currently doing business in Nigeria, you'd understand how inhospitable the economic climate currently is.

In a country where you have to provide your own infrastructure; uninterrupted power, security, pay rent for premises, pay many multiple taxes, pay staff, and so many other costs of doing business, how do you expect to break even? Where does the government come in to help?

The only thing the useless government is good at is having officials that will still loot the so-called fine like they've been looting all the loans they've been collecting for decades.

God help us in this country.

It is so simple as long as we remain consumers and not producers of goods and services this what you will get my take is very simple we should change our mind set we should focus on producing what we as citizens need that is when things will start getting better government should support and enable us in this aspect

This multichoice has become something else in this country. Something they cannot even try in south Africa. They have seen Nigeria as a country where anything goes due to corruption. So they feel they can do anything and go Scot free.
