Inaugural Train Journey Marks Milestone for Kano's Dala Inland Dry Port

In a significant development for Kano and international trade, the first set of 40-foot import containers has arrived at the Dala Inland Dry Port in Kano, Nigeria, from Apapa Port in Lagos. This journey of 1132 kilometers was completed in just a few days, showcasing the efficiency of the new transportation link.

The Dala Inland Dry Port, a joint investment of over $6 million by the Kano state government, the Nigerian Government, and the Shippers Council, was commissioned in the second quarter of last year. This port serves as both a port of origin and destination, enabling direct import and export operations.

On June 6th, 2024, the Federal Government @SenAlkali @NGRPresident officially launched the reopening of this freight corridor, marking a significant milestone for the railway route connecting Kano to neighboring states and nearby countries. This railway freight service is expected to create numerous business opportunities and facilitate the movement of import and export goods between these crucial regions.

The introduction of this freight service is expected to bring several benefits, including improvements in transportation services, a decrease in road traffic accidents, lower costs of goods, and a boost to Nigeria's Gross Domestic Product. This development is a testament to the commitment of the government and stakeholders to enhance the country's logistics infrastructure and promote international trade.

Senator Sa'idu Ahmed Alkali is the minister of transportation.

Senator Sa'idu Ahmed Alkali @SenAlkali

You may recall that during our regular project inspection last month, I mentioned that we plan to resume freight services on the old narrow gauge rail line from Lagos to Kano in June after completing rehabilitation.

Recently, we conducted a trial run moving import containers from Apapa Port in Lagos to Dala Inland Dry Port in Kano, and we successfully transported numerous 40 ft containers from Lagos to Kano in just a few days.

This freight rail line testing, spanning a distance of 1132 kilometers, had approximately five locomotive driver changing stations at Ibadan, Offa, Mokwa, Minna, and Kaduna Junction. Through the Nigerian Railway Corporation @info_NRC , we have implemented a regular inspection mechanism to prevent potential vandalism of rail tracks, including the removal of clips and fish plates.

I am delighted to announce to Nigerians that today 6th June 2024, the Federal Government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT GCFR will be officially launching the reopening of this corridor for freight. This significant railway route will create numerous opportunities for businesses and facilitate the movement of import and export goods between these crucial regions in the country. It is our intention that this railway service will facilitate the transportation of a substantial number of import and export containers, leading to improvements in transportation services, a decrease in road traffic accidents, lower costs of goods, and a boost to our Gross Domestic Product.

Our dedication to the continuation and successful conclusion of current projects is guided by the principles outlined in the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR. The President has consistently demonstrated his commitment to providing assistance and support for any initiatives that aim to improve the transportation sector in the country.

We are confident that if future governments adopt the same forward-thinking political dedication shown by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we can realize the Nigeria we aspire to.

Sen. Saidu Ahmed Alkali
Minister of Transportation

Mosebolatan @OIOlawale

I hope it doesn’t return to Lagos empty

I also hope this isn’t how slow it travelled all the way. That journey would easily be about four days or more. Despite being a narrow guage, it should move faster and I hope we will see more freights on this route

Dr Kabir A. @kbturaky

Sir, it travelled at 40km/hr. You know it cannot go the same speed when it already arrived its destination

Madam President (rtd) Iyabo Arinola Ifeoma Awokoya @iyaboawokoya

God bless Bubu, God bless Amaechi and God Bless Nigeria. Dear NRC and Dala Inland Plot. We can do something quickly about the approach. Plant some vegetation please

Dr Kabir A. @kbturaky

The idea is to extend the apron with the same concrete as the stacking area do that all the containers can be offloaded from the locomotives at the same time.

Engr Aliyu Jari @Aliyujari

Shows old narrow gauge line from Ibadan to Kano is now functional while work is ongoing on standard gauge line between Kano & Kaduna.
You asked about this a while back.
If we can transport fuel & other goods by rail cost of transportation will be reduced to cut down inflation

Madam President (rtd) Iyabo Arinola Ifeoma Awokoya @iyaboawokoya

Yes. I believe the narrow gauge has been functioning all along but it is quite heartening to see that Nigeria Railway Corporation is now more purposeful about haulage from Port to Port. (sea to inland). Let us just pray that they make is commercially expedient for importers and exporters and cargo customers so they can be patronised. Kudos to the new Minister of Transport

Ahmad_001 @Bt_ahmad

Nice, do you know how long it took from Lagos?

Lukemon Owolabi @lukemonowolabi

About 48km/hr and it took 4 days of travel from 7am to 6pm avoiding night joirney due to security fears. The train was also preceded by a railbus with engineers and security men on board...

I was going to post this years ago, but I never got round to it.

Dry ports

There has been talk of creating dry ports in Nigeria for a long time, especially during the Babangida era, but not much progress was made. Laws that permitted the operation of inland container terminals were passed during the Obasanjo era and some of these terminals were established on paper. In 2014, during the Goodluck Jonathan era, 6 of these dry ports were concessioned. The concessionaires were expected to build and run the ports.

Things moved much further during the Buhari era. The Buhari Administration had a railway modernisation plan which saw them complete the Abuja-Kaduna line, construct the Lagos-Ibadan line and "complete" the Warri-Itakpe line. As part of that plan, one of the dry ports was commissioned and the foundation stone of the other was laid. These were the Kano (Dala) and Kaduna dry ports.

Wait a minute! What are dry ports?

Imagine that you live in Kano and want to import goods. Imagine that you can indicate Kano as the destination for your goods. Imagine that your goods are shipped into the Apapa Port and directly loaded onto a train that is bound for Kano. Imagine that the train brings your goods to Kano and deposits them at a place where you can clear them through customs and make all the necessary payments, without having to go all the way to Lagos to clear them at the Apapa Port. That place in Kano where you can clear your goods is called a dry port.

Some of the proposed dry ports in Nigeria are in Kano (Dala), Kaduna, Ibadan, Katsina (Funtua), Abia (Aba) and Plateau.

To save our roads and reduce transportation cost and inflation, Rail transport for heavy duty containers are the best.

Wish this tempo can be sustained across the nation

Another name for a Dry port is a Bonded terminal. There are a number of them operating in Ijora and parts of Amuwo Odofin. One of the largest Bonded terminals in Lagos is operated by the Sifax group.
They were introduced as a way of decongesting the ports. So an importer can choose to ship his goods straight to a bonded terninal (and not Tincan or Apapa) and clear them from there. All the clearing and inspection agencies you would find at a regular port are also present in a Bonded Terminal e.g customs, NDLEA, SON, DSS etc…
