Blessing Iripia Alims has emerged as the first ever female President of the Students Union Government SUG of the University of Calabar UNICAL.

Alims emerged after tough election with close rival Ebim Dennis and others.

She made history as the first ever female SUG President under the first ever female Vice Chancellor of the institution, News360 Nigeria gathered.

Brief Profile

Alims hails from Gakem, Bekwarra LGA, Cross River State.

She is currently pursuing a degree in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution with a CGPA of 4.75.

She's a serial volunteer with the following NGOs: Girl's Power Initiative, The Bridge Leadership Foundation founded by Liyel Imoke, former governor of Cross River State, AIDS Healthcare Foundation and Youth Advocates, UNFPA Nigeria.

In 2022, Blessing Alims, was one of the winners amongst over 150 contestants drawn from across Africa to participate in the Youngers Foundation Female and More Social Impact Project. She was the only winner from Cross River State, a win that saw her going on a 10 days learning visit to Kigali, Rwanda.

Blessing has been involved in lots of charity initiatives and outreaches that have impacted positively on thousands of persons. She is one of the founding members of the Youth Friendly Hub in the University of Calabar, a hub that is impacting the lives of students positively with relevant skills for sustainability.

Just recently, she was selected to attend the Young Women Leadership Training Program (South South Region) organized by IFES - International Foundation for Electoral Systems.

In the campus debate organized by the National Union of Campus Journalists NUCJ, for contestants for the SUG President, Blessing Alims emerged number one with 87 points to defeat four other male aspirants.

Las las, UNICAL will still set JAMB admission cut off mark at a ridiculously disgraceful 140 out of 400 (35% admission pass) and accept 5'O level passes from combined two sittings results in its 49 years of mediocre admission standard. Smh.
Same mediocrity prevails at UNIUYO too with 140 cut off and 2 sittings O level!

Serious organizations know how 35% score can get you admitted into your school so don't be shocked when they don't hire products from schools like this in Nigeria.

It is no surprise that UNICAL undergraduates are failing massively. The university is culpable by lowering admission requirements to the most ridiculously low and mediocre level that should make every serious employer not to take any product of UNICAL serious.

The University of Calabar has been admitting failed JAMB candidates yet the federal Government keeps subsidising such mediocrity.

It's completely unacceptable to have any Federal Government funded school to be admitting students who fail JAMB. It's ridiculous. The Federal Ministry of Education should stop this mediocrity. 35% is not a pass mark!

Obviously the vc engineered this, hence there's nothing to celebrate over.

Don't mind me, I'm just envious. During my days at unical I was too studious and didn't partake in politics. Maybe I was just timid undecided

Congratulations to her!! And I hope I can say congratulations to the students.

I remember what we looked for in aspirants during my undergraduate days. They were all superficial. This candidate is more friendly, this candidate has organized free tutorials, this candidate has a great fashion sense. Even sometimes, we assumed that academic achievement is a relevant criteria.

So, did we ever achieve a candidate who was able to effectively represent our interests or successfully bargain for better first-aid or care for students at the Jaja clinic or successfully bargain that our power supply be improved or our broken toilets be fixed? Or that our fees if not reviewed lower, not be outrageously tripled?

No! None of this.

And the reason was because, we didn’t seek such candidates. I wished someone told us to reorient our thinking and prioritize proper qualities like courage, empathy, a commitment to social justice and intelligence relevant to the position. Zik hall was close, but it was the Elder’s choices that always triumphed and the elders were the ones who probably sanctioned that one of their colleagues be stripped naked and marched to Idia and Awo. If there was a student who was courageous to speak up for a thief and save him from lynching, a student that challenged oppressive authorities even among the students bodies, a candidate who could demonstrate they could achieve a win-win goal in their negotiations - yet willing to accept a suspension for mobilizing students to demand a pedestrian bridge because he was mad for the students safety. A student who saw any suspension or victimization as a badge of honor insofar it’s achieved in his effort to amplify the student’s interest. It is such people to hope for.

But often we settled for candidates who were only seeking to boost their egos or pad their resumes, rather than serve.

I hope the University of Calabar students finds in this president elect, a leader that embodies the right values.

Why are Yorubas not holding their Governors accountable for not massively putting the monthly Allocations into Encouraging/Developing Farming as their Northern Counterparts have done over there Years?!!!
