I Feel Embarrassed When Guys Bargain For Foodstuff In The Market by natedensel: 8:50pm On Jun 14 |
Is it just me or it's same with other guys, the embarrassment I feel is as if I'm the one doing something embarrassing, and I can't help the feeling, because of that I shy away from buying foodstuff or other stuff that will make me bargain. Most times I ask my sisters or girlfriend to accompany me so she can do the bargaining or get the stuff for me. My older brother bargains alot like he can't do without bargaining and for that I avoid going anywhere with him. Incase you're wondering how I survive without bargaining, I just use people close to me when its something I must bargain for, but if it's something like clothes, I know the standard price for stuff like that so I just make an offer, and for basic things like packaged groceries I buy from supermarkets in more than one quantity. 14 Likes 8 Shares

I had to read patiently to under what you mean. Yes it's true some people are shy when they get to the market. They don't have the confidence to price down or negotiate certain things. This is probably because you didn't get the chance to frequent the market with mother. Because some mothers can beat down the price of a 500naira pepper to 200naira. If you are the shy type, have it at the back of your mind that there is no fixed price for anything. If you can afford to shop in a supermarket, the prices are moderatly sized without cheating but you fit still price am 67 Likes 5 Shares |

My uncle is so good at bargaining that I rarely see him give police or soldiers money at check points even when they are expecting something. This is in sharp contrast to my father who gives them small something so as to continue his journey. 55 Likes 3 Shares |

natedensel:Life never happened to you and pray it doesn't because if it does, you'll not only bargain, you'll beg those market women. There's nothing wrong with bargaining for price though some people do it as if there's something else involved. 166 Likes 9 Shares

natedensel:If I come your Shop to buy food stuff. If I didn't end up buying it at the cost price or a little above the cost price I won't be a happy man. I must price like 5 different shops before I finally buy from one person. 31 Likes 5 Shares |

This is just me, no matter how ignorant I am towards the price of the product I'll still compare other prices before going for the right one. blessedinnoma: 6 Likes 1 Share |

natedensel:a typical Nigerian? There are others that say man shouldn’t go to the market to get food stuffs , even as a bachelor I see a lot of one sided thinking people try to talk down on me… but as a typical me. Who cares? In business or in life you will definitely need the skill of bargaining, I have met a few business people that in my capacity I can call them great financially … there Bargain. Please have a change of perception , if not for you for the sake of a possible place in the future … there is a known fact that most Africans don’t properly Bargain interest rate on loans they seek from international organization…. Oh! These are two different things right? No there are not. It is your money … it is your resources… when the option is open you can make use of it… there is nothing shameful or inhuman . Even in places where you think there is no room for bargaining … there is a chance to speak up to get a better deal. Be smart . Oga!!! Real life is no zadaka as we are been programmed to be. Keep the change . Fling money up and down. It shows how much we lack wisdom And common sense. It has nothing to do with generosity or what ever excuse … we are the poorest people … but we are the once’s with the biggest ego, pride and nonsense thinking . 69 Likes 6 Shares |

RealityKings: Thank you! My mother will price 1 Naira pepper to 10 kobo, then when the malas at Mile 12 tell her to just steal it, she will tell them how her 12 year old son will beat all the malas in Mile 12. Today, when he prices things, his siblings call him mala beater. 7 Likes 2 Shares |

If Meek Mill, 50 Cent, and some other millionaires can haggle for prices of items, why shouldnt you? You should learn to be bold and socialize too 10 Likes 3 Shares |

The bigger issue is, why must we bargain for virtually everything in Nigeria? We prefer the method that reduces competition and gives unmeritted profit. That's greed. 6 Likes 1 Share |

I don't know how to haggle prices and avoid it as much as I can. During my undergraduate days, I used to think I was doing great because I try to think about prices from a Lagos perspective. A friend followed me one day and a piece of fish that I buy for N30 he priced it for N10. Since then, I will tell him in class if I need go to the market. He was sometimes pissed because he thought I was wasteful since I buy so much and I go to the market frequently. I don't think it is because I am shy because I am reserved and not shy. I think most times for me, it comes from a place of empathy perhaps, because I feel they are going through much stress selling under the sun. At some point, I wouldn't buy things for my younger sister when I started working because anything I buy is always too expensive in her opinion because I do not haggle prices. That said, haggling is different from bargaining. I can bargain for a fair income because there is an industry standard and average which usually is my start point and I put my reasonable percent above it. 6 Likes 2 Shares |
