The boy not only stole from his father and family, he stole his own future. His education in jeopardy, with the only beneficiaries being bet9ja and his girlfriend.

Gambling has destroyed many lives and will destroy even more in the coming years but we are not ready for that conversation yet.

Gambling destroys as fast as drug abuse. Leading to poverty, debts, anxiety, depression, withdrawal from friends, stealing, dropping out from school, closing down businesses, selling one's properties, shame and uncontrollable addiction from chasing losses.

Imagine if this boy had started a business with the 25m he stole from his dad. But gambling addiction will make you believe you can make a quick turnover and become rich overnight.

The scammers all over the internet displaying fake tickets and assuring unsuspecting but greedy youths of "sure games" are also not helping matters. Ask your self if these so called professional punters have liberated their entire family members from poverty? So why are they interested in liberating you from poverty. Think o. Think.

I remember a volunteer work I did with an NGO a couple of years back, I got to understand how much lives gambling has destroyed. From broken marriages, to ruined businesses, to suicides, the list is endless.

Some of the real-life experiences I saw;

1. A banker with F***t Bank in Lagos who was stealing customers' funds to bet. A young guy of 26 years at that time. He was eventually caught and dismissed. Family rallied round him, paid off his debts and found him another job at G*Bank. He went back into the same thing and was sacked again.

2. A business man in Anambra who wrecked his business because of gambling. His wife was about to divorce him because things had gotten worse financially. He underwent rehabilitation and then relapsed again. This time around, stealing from his wife's money to gamble.

3. A pastor in Imo State who was using church funds to gamble. By the time he reported for counselling, he had wasted over 9m naira of church money on betting.

4. A boy in Ibadan who sold his father's car to gamble. This boy was 19 years old as that time.

There are so many cases I cannot mention here. But from my personal experience, while all parts of Nigeria are bedeviled with this social vice, the South East is most affected. Being very industrious people with access to liquidity, they spend so much on gambling and this has wrecked many previously successful businessmen.

If the national assembly does not pass a law to regulate this growing menace, many youths will lost their future to gambling.
