By Matthew Atungwu

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has said that the upsurge of corruption in the country is defeatable if every stakeholder on the anti-graft corridor makes concerted efforts.

The Commission’s chairman, Ola Olukoyede made this statement in his Eid-El-Kabir message.

He stressed that renewal of efforts towards combating all forms of economic and financial crimes is necessary to kill the menace.

“It is obvious that we can attain peace, love, progress and unity of purpose for a Nigeria free of corruption and unsavoury practices.

“Let’s keep building. Let’s keep attacking every threat to our progress. Let’s keep fighting economic and financial crimes together,” he said.

Olukoyede added that Nigerians were not inherently corrupt, and there was nothing fundamentally wrong with the nation.

The anti-graft boss felicitated with the nation on the occasion of Eid-El-Kabir, emphasizing that the lessons of the festival should drive more commitments to the anti-corruption fight.

“The lessons of forbearance, sacrifice, faith and hope in Almighty Allah which Eid teaches should imbue in us fresh desire to please God and serve our nation without corrupt practices.

“We should renew our efforts towards fighting all forms of economic and financial crimes,”
he said.

Corruption is defeatable but a man who graduated from a school 4 years before the school was founded cannot defeat corruption.

A drug lord who escaped prison by paying over $400k cannot defeat corruption.

A man with dual citizenship cannot defeat corruption.

A man who used bullion Vans to launder money cannot defeat corruption.

If you want to defeat corruption ask Tinubu to mention any teacher that taught him economics in secondary school. Start from there.

By arresting any boy with dreadlock then labelling him as a fraudster (yahoo boy), Abi by using you guys as a tool to oppress the other party.

Corruption will stop when you people start looking at the elite in a certain C(criminal) party.

First of all, you didn't say anything tangible, notable or laudable sir. Yes, Nigerians in the olden days were not inherently corrupt, but the present day Nigerians including you, are inherently corrupt... even the babies grow up in the midst of corruption! They see you guys taking bribe from their parents, they naturally imbibe the spirit of bribe giving and taking because it's happening all around them. If military/paramilitary men and women stop taking bribe today, we would have stopped 60% of the corruption problem undecided

As long as we have corrupt people in government...forget defeating corruption. Until we start handling down life sentences to corrupt government officials... Oh, I forgot, the judges too are abysmally corrupt undecided

No sir, corruption is part of life in Nigeria and can never be eliminated. The only thing we can do is to define which limits are acceptable.

Let me explain.

Corruption is defined as abuse of entrusted power for private gain. In simple terms it means using public power, influence or assets for private gain. So for example when a nephew or niece gets a job in a govt establishment without due process by their uncles influence, that is corruption. When a governor awards contract to friends and allies with due process that's corruption. When people demand or collect money from politicians before they cast vote, that's corruption. Or calling your daddy to intervene when u get caught for violating traffic rules, that is most definitely corruption.

Bottomline is the entire Nigerian system functions on corruption. Everybody tries to manipulate the system in their own favour, not just politicians. Most only complain when they are not the ones benefitting.

The converse is also true that people are actually not only justified but incentivized to be corrupt. How can u be paying a father with wife and two kids 50k a month. And u think he won't look for other means to survive And even if he decides that he is holy and does the right thing, by the time he retires into poverty, everybody will blame him for being foolish.

It was painful that 85% of yoruba Muslim faithful in Lagos yesterday celebrated Salah without fresh pepper and tomatoes 😭 its worst when you remember that our brothers the Yorubas love pepper yet great numbers couldn't afford it, 6 pieces of pepper goes for 500 naira and 7 pieces of semi unripe tomatoes goes for 1k. I can tell you that there is hope and cheaper alternative to tomatoes but we are working on pepper too but for now lets concentrate on cheaper alternative for tomatoes. Do you know that pawpaw is better than fresh tomatoes? Yes I said pawpaw especially the red ones, I will be hosting a special seminar here on nairaland tomorrow 10 AM, join me and say goodbye to fresh tomatoes
