Residents of Okpoama kingdom in Brass Island, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, butchered a giant fish suspected to be a whale found washed ashore on the Okpoama beach area of the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday morning.

DAILY POST learnt that the stranded fish was grounded on Tuesday night due to a low sea wave at the river bank.

Residents of the kingdom met the stranded whale on Wednesday morning and trooped out with machetes, hawk shaws and axes to butcher the fish, which appeared dead.

An indigene of the community and a former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in Bayelsa State, Mr Tarinyo Akono, said the whale may have died after it got stranded due to a low tide on Tuesday, adding that if it was found alive, it could perhaps have been rescued and sent back to the sea.

The youth president of Okpoama community, Seiyefa Felix Ben-Basuo, also confirmed the incident, saying the people were still at the waterside butchering the animal because of its huge size.

The high tide from the river due to the rainy season might have brought the whale to the bank, where it was stranded. A similar giant whale got stranded at the same waterside and was also butchered by the residents in August 2019.

You will have to explain why it is "uncivilised" to kill and eat an animal that will have died if humans don't take any action to save it in the first place.

You want to argue that they are endangered right? The people who classified them as endangered are the one who made them endangered in the first place not villagers in Bayelsa.

This is a cause for concern. Just in case what disease incapacitated the whale or wreck it.

Hope the disease can't be transmitted to human?

Time will tell

It'd have polluted the area if they didn't butchered it, since the whale is dead.

It's colorful and people will gladly devour this into their stomach?

Anyway, I just want to remind Nigerians that we're in a mess as we are currently all experiencing hardship together.

Whether you voted for Tinubu or Peter Obi..... We are all suffering together.....

The suffering is our turn to suffer... Emi lo Kan for suffering!

There's hunger, and I'm left wondering if the President is aware of the food price inflation.

It seems like we don't have a president.

If this were during Buhari's tenure, we would have called him 'Aboki' or even joked that he had been replaced by Jibril from Sudan.

It's hard to tell if there's a functioning government in Nigeria at all

No pictures or videos....that's big meat and food for a long long time, just roast it, dehydrate it or fill up your freezers.

White people have haunted, killed and eaten whales to to point that some species are endangered now.
But this particular one just died by dying.
We didn't kill it. We didnt haunt it.
So whomever, is free to eat it.
Whenever anybody touches something, it is white people that will shout the loudest, after creating all the global warming and endangering every animal on earth.

Like I said, and like you have pointed out the animal is dead of natural causes and so it's free for all. But saying we should start killing our own because the white has finish killing his own will not fly.
By the way, yes the white man hunted these animals to extinction, and yes the white man has also dedicated more money than any other to it's conservation.
If this animal go it will affect us too. It will not be a matter of tit for tat
