Eagba:If you can learn cockroach production without causing a major disease outbreak, contain them to just your production site, and eradicate them all when you decide to stop, go for it. Also, treat this as their main meal rather than a supplement. The millet, corn, and soy feed that people throw around here is nonsense. Then you find a clean energy source in their feed. The person you are asking doesn't know about it. Go ahead with your research, bro. If you can do it for only the chicken you eat at home, and eggs you eat...and you can add organic veggie...Trust me...you will live longer than the average Nigerian. Goodluck bro! 1 Like 2 Shares |

Gentlesoul2021:Breeding is a business billionaries have taken over, and the end game is to control food supply. Exactly what is already happening in Nigeria. The game is that there won't be gardeners and backyard farming... just like how it is already in Nigeria. Go check out... Everyone is calling on the government to give them food. Did people who live from 1900 to late 90s solely depend on government for food supply? Even Awolowo did not attempt to work on staple food. Rather, he introduced cash crops - rubber, cocoa, palms, etc. But today, all forms of breeding have taken over food production from gardeners..lol. Go ask farmers the cost of seeds... They can't even use heritage seeds because diseases were deliberately spread so that they can buy their own diseases resisted varieties. So, the same thing is happening in livestock and poultry. The broilers you buy are called commercial. These ones are the ones they want farmers to buy. Sure, the female can lay eggs, but I won't be surprised if they have modified it such that they can't lay eggs again. My point is that the last time I checked, they can still lay eggs, but if you try it...you won't get good quality chicks. You will likely have deformation here and there. However, you can tweak it if you have breeding skills also. But why would you wanna spend months or years tweaking it when you aren't interested in becoming one of the guys who are taking away farming from common men and women? It takes a lot of money to do that. So, if you want to breed, there is a special kind called "parents" you buy. Then, you can get into the business of breeding. However, you are restricted in many ways. These billionaries still have "grandparents," and I won't be shocked if there are already "greatgrandparents". Go through my threads on the high cost of day old and learn more. Read the comments there. One day old chick of the parent is over N5,000....and they sell in bulk. You will be lucky to get 50 chicks. Lol. Try to do research on NL. These topics have been discussed many times...so, it gets boring when people start asking questions that have been answered many times. No one will respond. So, get yourself together and dig out old threads. Make research. Good luck! 1 Like |

Gentlesoul2021:Listen, threads you will learn so much from don't make front page. Some of them already have many pages. Threads that make front page are like 1 page, and they patch the initial post with pictures to make them front page worthy. Lol. You won't get so much there because stupid comments suddenly flood the thread after hitting the front page. And then, things died down, and if the OP isn't the front page hunter, the thread continues...and if you follow such, you start learning. There are so many threads on poultry - chicken, turkey, duck; ruminants - goats, cattle, sheep; rabbits; etc. Use the search tool, input your search words, and restrict your search to the agricultural section. You'll be amazed tons of information that will pop up. Good luck! 1 Like |

epainos: Lol. It's diversification bro. Ever heard of multiple portfolios in business. In your farm, broilers may be the cash cows, but local fowls would be an additional source of income. Besides, locals are less stressful than broilers |
Re: Journey On My Local Chicken Production by epainos: 5:37am On Jun 21, 2024 |
stanvesco:Local fowls for personal consumption is OK... but kindly show me one person who has made enough reliable income from raising them? And let us know the additional income such can give. Have you ever heard of breakeven analysis in business? Have you ever heard of profit and loss ratio to know which lines to discontinue? When you understand broiler production, it isn't stressful. The problem with most farmers is that they don't want to spend at all, but they want to make big money. Period. Learn the optimal condition to raise them, give it to them, and they will do excellently well. People who complain they are stressful just don't want to learn or don't want to spend. At the end of the day, it's all about how we view life. If you can spend and even waste time in order not to spend money, then, good for you. Responsible people compare time and money. Time is money. I am not saying people should not rear local chickens, but I am asking them to come forward and show us that they have made something reasonable out of it after 1 year or 2 years of production. Go check them out... They make may be N150k or even less in 2 years. And they treat it as their main business. No wonder they keep struggling financially. For the purpose of health, it is perfect. I can do it for such too. So, diversify with sense bro because diversification can also shatter you. |
Re: Journey On My Local Chicken Production by stanvesco(m): 5:43am On Jun 21, 2024 |
epainos: Lol. You think and plan too much bro Sometimes, perfectionism is a wahala. Get those local chickens and enter business. Learn along the line. Local chicken is still in business today because someone is making profit. I have a friend that ventured into this business and his business failed because somebody bought out his entire stock. Meaning that he sells, sell, sell and outsold his main parents. So yeah, the market is available. Enjoy bro |
Re: Journey On My Local Chicken Production by epainos: 5:57am On Jun 21, 2024 |
stanvesco:Read what you wrote. So, your friend who outsold himself is wise or stupid? That's when you don't plan. Stop this rubbish... and plan well. Tel me how local birds raising is a business? From what I know, 99.9% who raise it eat 90% of their birds themselves. They are mostly in villages. A business you can not easily scale up...lol. Have you learned about scalability in business? This is a priority for modern businesses. If you want to get a business visa to these super world power nations, your business must be able to scale up easily. You have to show them the plan how to scale up. Perhaps you need an adviser to help you with a good business plan. Most of you see it as a waste, and in the end, you mess up. Still, you don't learn. Perfection is not what I preach...so don't twist it. I am only saying...show me that this thing is profitable, but you can't. And ya ya ya ya ya....it is profitable...it is profitable...show me na...you can't...Next...you plan too much. Are you damn serious now? Nope, I won't be a failure ....I won't follow blindly. That's how they promoted f3 f4 ft noilers...I will make eggs from my noiler...I will use kerosene automatic incubator...lol...rubbish!!!! Go check all the threads....they were all crushed. Should I start posting failed threads here? Just cos it is cheap or free does not mean it is worth doing. Again, I am not saying local birds aren't OK... but hey...na waooo. I produce quails... but it is for personal consumption. I don't come here to promote it as a source of income because it is not in Nigeria. But the eggs and meat are ok. It even has a better feed conversion than turkey... but Nigerians won't still buy it. But it is good for personal consumption. I know it is not worth promoting it, so I don't. If you don't plan well, you have successfully planned to fail. Period. |
