Trigger Warning.

Look, I was yabbing Jessica Alba after reading the summary, only to recall mid-yab where I first discovered her - Dark Angel. She was a BAMF in that show, so now I'm watching this film because I haven't seen BAMF Alba in a very very long time.

In July 2010, audio recordings surfaced online of Gibson making abusive and racist remarks in a conversation with his ex-girlfriend, Russian singer and songwriter Oksana Grigorieva. The pair had been together since 2007, and Grigorieva gave birth to their daughter Lucia in 2009.

In the clip, Gibson can be heard saying: "You go out in public and it's a fucking embarrassment to me. He told her she looked like a "fucking bitch on heat" and said it would be her fault if she were to get raped by a "pack" of niggers people he referred to using the N-word.

this was what did him in and put him on ice for like 10 years

Oh, right. Yeah, I saw someone saying this in the comments section about Gibson as a response to the Jonathan Majors movie.
Wonder how I somehow forgot that.

I've been saying the same thing. There haven't been any good new movies for streaming for weeks now. All we've been talking about is series and HOTD.
Is it because of the strike or something. The only new movie is from A24 'I Saw the TV Glow' and the movie is shit

Netflix are in the streaming business. They need new contents to service the needs of their ever growing subscribers.
They don't need every movie to be a thought provoking exercise.
Btw they also have those in their library.

Anyway it's good to see Jessica Alba again.
She fine as hell

I don't know the cause of the decline but they need to rectify it fast. Glad shows are holding it down, especially this month of June, i have been eating good.

A movie doesn't need to be thought provoking to be good, and currently Netflix are releasing neither.

The really good movies in their library, are from outside production and they are from yester years ago that they recently just acquired rights to.

I can't even name 5 really good Netflix original movies from this year alone, and app is becoming more redundant personally to me.

And Jessica Alba in a 2024 flick seems like a fan service gimmick to me, because she has been out of the movie game for so long, that i even thought she retired, and puting her in a low quality flick contextually, seems counter productive.

But it's totally okay if these kind of movies appeal to you.

To me, I feel it's partly due to the strike. That strike fvvked many things up for first half of this year. So much movies moved and that's the reason DUNE PART TWO is still the number one movie till now.

Still wonder how Netflix have the stomach for this kind of outrageous budgets for a movie to be dumped in streaming straight up. If it was going to theatres initially before coming to streaming I can say, they can recoup their funds but a movie that's gonna be forgotten in two weeks time, that's a whole lot.

Despite how one is made to believe streaming is profitable, I highly doubt that a movie with a $200mn-300mn budget will make back it's money solely in a streaming service. Not possible to me. Those profitability are reserved for movies in the $50-70mn (or lesser) production budget.

Anyways, they seem to have hired a new executive who's not into overly spending on these mostly trash storytelling with big budgets. Looking forward to what the film slate of Netflix will be in 2025.

I heard she retired already but decided to come back from retirement this year or so cos she got bored and her business got so energy & time consuming she couldn't breathe. I heard she scaled the business to $1bn before selling it.
Can't verify how true it is.

Netflix has undergone some serious reshuffling earlier this year in their film department. So, things might change next year.

πŸ˜‚it might actually be your thing but I just think it's just very artsy in a bad way. It can be a short film but they made it longer just because - just using bright colours and dark colours with very slow transitions and camera movements 😭 a 9/10 story a bad direction

They know it'll be profitable just because of the stars and director in the movie. Look at the Gray Man- although no one liked it (except me) it did well enough to guarantee a sequel in less than a week πŸ€·πŸ½β€β™‚οΈ. The Electric State has Millie Bobby Brown in it - someone that just made a movie (Damsel) that's already in the top 10 most watched Netflix Movies ever made. With Chris Pratt and some A List celebsπŸ€·πŸ½β€β™‚οΈ. It looks like that has always worked for them

I don't really think that's working for them. All those numbers na vibes to me to make them seem ultra successful.
Sure, they bring lots of viewers but I highly doubt just a single movie alone will bring about $200mn worth of subscription money by itself in 3 months of average theatrical window.
Many of those movies na flop on a normal day eg that Rebel Moon. One new Netflix movie like that dethroned it from number one spot in just 2 weeks iirc. A B movie at best oo. So I doubt those Netflix numbers.
Also the mere fact that viewership doesn't necessarily equate money in streaming makes it even more questionable.

We can very well remember in 2019-2020 when Disney launched across the world with it supersonic rise to over 100mn viewers. Everyone including Wall Street was hyping the service up. Fast forward to 2024 the service hasn't still turned profit yet and a massive money drainer for Disney with billions in losses. It's still not even close to profitability judging Disney's initial 2024-25 profitability schedule.

Remember when HBOMAX launched in 2020 with its struggles and ppl focusing on its slow pace of amassing viewers. Yet it's now profitable with $50mn last year and about $80mn+ Q1 2024 already. It's Average Revenue Per User sef, Disney wishes it has despite having a significant larger subscriber count.

With these I highly doubt these success narrative Netflix is spreading with their mega movies. The only thing I feel probably helps Netflix is cos of their immense scale with over 200mn subs worldwide. So its easier to sΓΊck up the spending outlay. Even at that Netflix unleashed a massive crackdown on password sharing last year. Price increase, Job cuts, animation department being shelved, announced a reduction in film numbers and a focus on quality, and a sack of their former film head to hire a new boss in Dan Lin.
Several restructure in the last year suggests things ain't so super smooth as they would make everyone believe.
