Rising Cost Of Food: Presidency Urges Nigerians To Embrace Subsistence Farming by BeeBeeOoh(m): 7:59pm On Jun 22
The presidency has called on Nigerians to embrace subsistence farming to address the challenge of rising cost of food.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, made the call at a meeting with a group of online editors, under the aegis of the Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE) in Abuja.

A statement on the meeting was made available to newsmen by ACOE’s Chairman, Mr Martins Odiete, on Saturday in Abuja.

“In 1976, former President Olusegun Obasanjo introduced ‘Operation Feed the Nation,’ promoting farming.

“In 1984, when former President Muhammadu Buhari came in, there were shortages of rice, milk, and sugar, and the government had to open warehouses to make these items available to people.

“This is not the first time we are going through this kind of crisis.

“The government is investing in agriculture to make things available and affordable, and as individuals, we also have a role to play,” he said.

Onanuga acknowledged that, things were not working as President Bola Tinubu’ wanted.

He, however assured that in the next twelve months, Nigerians will begin to see the results of the government’s efforts for the country’s benefit.

“Though people complain about hardship, I told the BBC that cost of living crises exist globally.

“Maybe what is happening in the world is a cycle, and countries will have to go through certain difficulties.

“We are going through it, but this government is making serious efforts to reduce the hardships faced by our people,” he said.

Onanuga assured the association of robust relationship towards dissemination of news in line with global best practices.

Earlier, Odiete emphasised the importance of partnership with the presidential media team, at a time Nigerians are eager for essential information from their government.

“In an age where information flows ceaselessly across digital platforms, this partnership is pivotal for ensuring accurate, responsible and effective dissemination of news and information.

“By working together, we can ensure that the information reaching the public serves the greater good of society,” he said.

Odiete, who thanked Onanuga for the meeting, noted that members of the association were thoroughly screened to avoid admitting the wrong persons.”

Sponsor farmers by giving them low interest loans if the government can invest heavily into agriculture

We all know why people don't go to farm anymore. Government should do something about it and not make nonsense advise.

Subsistence agriculture is good but the fact that government is deliberately ignoring Fulani herdsmen who are destroying farmlands and killing farmers calls for concern. Farmers who practice large scale farming cannot go to their farms.
Since I was born, I have never heard of beans being a scarce commodity or price of garri skyrocketing almost everyday.
Tinubu should open the borders let food come in. What's delaying that?
Nigerians are starving nau!!!

Can APC show us example of how substant farming has helped any nation to be rich in history

You want to use 15 trillion to build a road that would never make profit when we are broke

Do you know how many farms that money can set up? How many farm cooperative can benefit?

15 trillion is more than enough to revolutionize our agro sector completely

But no let's use 15 trillion to build road that won't create any permanent job, won't increase revenue in any way

What do you think would happen if we ask farmers to form cooperatives of 50 people minimum, and have access to 500 hectares

you train 5 of them on security for 3 months and give them License to carry gun to protect the arms

give them access to 50 million to 200 million loan at 7% interest rate with 2 years interest free payment and interest start the 3rd year... Payment in 5 years

Say would set aside 5 trillion and an average cooperative gets 75 million

That means 66,666 cooperative would benefit
Let's say 60,000 benefits thats 3 million farmers benefiting and 30 million hectares cultivated

In 5 years interest profit would be over 1 trillion

Yearly tax from this cooperative would be over 500 billion minimum

Now that's how it's done

Which Northerners dey produce food?

The whole middle belt has been ravaged by insecurity, they've left the farm

Tell Tinubu to open up the borders
people are dying
He can find other ways to help the naira like banning Hajj he subsidized with 90b tax payer money

Good advice. I know and seen a good number of close people in Lagos planting few crops both in their gardens and small farms.. All kind of vegetables, yams, plantain, tomatoes, fruits, etc.

Even in abroad my neighbors have gardens that they plant tomatoes, vegetables, etc.

So its not out of place. We just need to stop giving excuses for everything.

No wonder Zxcvbnmghtr was talking about farming in the backyard grin grin grin

So that's the latest APC strategy eh grin cheesy

Onanuga needs to stop saying nonsense with all due respect to him

Operation Feed The Nation was targeted at food crops because most Nigerian farmers shifted attention to cash crops. It failed ultimately.

Buhari's essenco was also a massive failure. I mean, who can even be justifying rationing of milk, sugar and soap in this day and age? Was milk and sugar being produced in people's backyards?

If you're referencing two massive failures as justification for your policy, I fear for what you expect to achieve from such policy.

You're right
People should also rear chickens, goats and cows to have a steady supply of animal protein beside the gardens. The waste from these animals can serve as manure for the garden.
They can also have a small space to keep drums to boil their own crude oil to ensure a steady supply of petrol, diesel and other fuels. Almost all houses abroad have these kind of facilities.
Enough of the excuses from lazy Nigerians
