Toyota Corolla 2009 Gear Issue, I Need Urgent Assistance by ladycn: 10:05am On Feb 13, 2022
My Toyota Corolla 2009 (American model) shaft was replaced because of the knock/bang sound I hear when I push the gear lever from Park to reverse. The change caused gear oil leakage for some days. The seal was later changed and oil topped but the leakage became minimal. He said the rust on the new shaft cup was probably the cause, he cleaned the rust, washed with fuel and fixed it back.

Prior to and while these were going on, the gear had not been engaging to 4 and 5. After the mechanic did and serviced the valve body, the car began to rev (without a change in speed) only when I accelerate and the speedometer pointer is about to leave 40. Mechanic serviced the valve body severally (changed some solenoids), even used another car valve body but it didn't solve the revving issue ( it selected gears up to 5 on its own, however, still revvs at that point, when I accelerate myself).

We scanned the car again and it produced these codes: P2414, P0710, P2757 (P2757 code has been showing for some time though) and P2716. Eventually, the oil got burnt, 4 gear specialists we contacted said the fibre got burnt and need to be replaced. Gear Box was brought down for service, fibres and drum changed and fixed but the car still Revs at that point when I accelerate. I made sure I bought the original Toyota WS he used.

The gear specialist now suggests we replace the valve body that my gear box is very neat and can't be the cause of the problem. I'm exhausted. i had from the first day told the mechanic/gear specialist that I don't want trial work.

In summary, the issues the car has are the revving without a change in speed when I accelerate and the bang/knock sound I get when I push the gear lever from Park to reverse only.

4 persons have checked and confirmed that the Engine seats are in tact. They all said shaft is the cause and that the shaft I bought has been worked on.

Shaft causes drivability issues not high rev.

The gear components has already been compromised, buy a replacement gear, if funds are low switch to manual transmission and rest.

It is hard to come by a gear technician in Nigeria of today, sometimes sef the parts to fix the gear aren't available to a qualified techy

Update Thanks everyone for your contributions so far.

Valve body bought was fixed on Sunday and the revving stopped. However, the ride is not smooth. The car makes a knock sound when it's selecting gear. The gear specialist said I should drive the car for days that it would get smooth on its own.

I don't know how long I have to drive the car for the gear selection to get smooth, but if it doesn't after a week, I will have the gear box changed. I can't manage the car for a long time because I do interstate travel some days.

@ladycn Please If I may ask. How did you finally resolve this issue with your Toyota Corolla 2009? I have exactly the same issue and I have done a lot but still unable to resolve the issue. I will appreciate if you can share the knowledge.

Good morning.
So sorry My story is lengthy, It the way I can explain my problem, so u can understand me.
I'm using a 2009 corolla, and my problem with the car started like 6-7 months ago when I noticed small gear oil was leaking in btw the engine and the gear. The Mec said they will need to bring down the gear box to change the seal and I said no way, that I will prefer to be toping the oil than to risk working on the gear. I usually top the oil 1liter every two weeks depending on how much I drive the Car which is not that bad. Then it changed for the worst last month, I started using 1liter every week, then twice a week, then 1liter every day.
At this point I do not have a choice but to change the seal. The seal was changed by the mec and the leaking didn't stop, so a gear specialist was call to check the gear and he said I have to replace the oil pump. Bought oil pump 45k and when he came to install the pump the turqe converter didn't come out easily as it should and he said I have to change the converter too, piad 35k for another converter, he installed it, we mount the gear back and the oil leaking stop but I noticed some clicking sound coming from the gear box, call his attention to it and he said it will stop when the oil circulate fully, So he left.
I engage the gear and everything seems fine until after two days, car won't move as it use to, it revs high with slow movement, managed to get it home and the next morning, it did not engage in drive at all, I tried it later in the afternoon and it engaged, test it out in the street and drives fine. Tried testing it later at night and the drive didn't engage again. I was planning to arrange the car to be towed to my Mec workshop and I engage the drive and it worked, I quickly drive the car to Mec. The gear guy come again and open the back aluminum and said Its bad he showed me the worn out part and said It has to be replaced and he will change the fiber in it. Paid another 150k for the aluminum cover.
But he brought a worked one, that he couldn't find the tokunbo and vow it wont give me any issues that it's just to hold the pressure. He fixed it and car works fine again took the car home for sallah and returned on Wednesday.
Thursday night gear started revving high with little or no movement, but this time around I noticed if I allowed the car to cool, it works fine for some minutes and goes back to revving high with no movement. Now the gear guy is telling me to change valve body I told him never that he should get me good tokunbo aluminum cover I paid for, or give me back my 150k or I get police involved.
I make enquiry on the cost of a new 9pin gear and I'm get a price range of 550k to 750k.
It's too expensive for me right now, Have spent all savings for sallah and it will take a while for me to get 750k for new gear box
I'm thinking of retracing my step from the convert maybe I should just put back my old converter and see how it goes then replace the aluminum back cover if that doesn't work.
Have scand the car and it's not bringing gear related code.

I need help pls.
I need a competent gear specialist pls.

We have always reiterated here that no gear expert for naija for now even parts to fix the gear are not available.

Retrace your steps and if it works fine manage the vehicle and save up for replacement gear. Normal scanner won't pick gear codes, you need high end scanner for that.

You have tried, I have dealt with 6 mechanics over a very simple fix my car needed, I even went to one of those very big workshops where your details are entered into the system at the reception 😅 before you're attended to, a fully air-conditioned space, their high end scanner was used to check my vehicle and the list of parts they told me to buy would make even a novice know they're just doing guess work, a very small regular workshop fixed my issue.
The worst thing is being unfortunate with quacks who promise what they know they can't deliver just to milk you, transmission issue is my most dreaded issue, one weyrey mechanic won even use my manual mode one day like that if you see how I take slap him hand comot, something wey me never try before lol.
My advice, don't deal with these people you dealt with, find a new technician who's said to be good in your area, tell him to revert to the original state and manage your vehicle like that if it works, pending the time you save for a new gear. I pray not to have gear issues but If it happens God knows I'm not repairing, it's either I scrap the vehicle or buy a new gear, I'm not wasting my money on no gear specialist.
