Obasanjo Needs To Apologise For Putting Murtala On The N20 Note by gidgiddy: 10:46am On Jun 24
When Obasanjo was military dictator in the 70's, he put the face of General Murtala Mohammed on the 20 Naira note. This was a huge error because Murtala Mohammed is not a role model for anyone. He was a murderous coup plotter, war criminal and military dictator. There was nothing positive about the man

How do you put Murtala Mohammed alongside the likes of Herbert Macaulay, Zik, Awolowo and Sarduana?

When Obasanjo returned as civilian, he had the opportunity to correct this national embarrassment of putting Murtala Mohammed on the N20 note. Obasanjo introduced the N200 and N500 and put eminently qualified people on it. He had the power to remove Murtala from the N20 Naira, but did not

Obasanjo needs to tender an apology for not correcting the mistake he made.

A military head of state is simply someone who used guns to shoot his way into power. There's nothing glorifying about that and such men should not be honoured on public tender

Nigeria is a strange country. Honouring a man who came to power by the barrel of the gun is why others will one day try to get to power through the barrel of the gun

He is considered as a hero in some quarters due to the role he played during 1966 coup and the eventual civil war where they emerged victorious. All the officers that participated in that counter coup and eventual civil war were handsomely rewarded.Honouring Murtala Mohammed is part of it.Buhari is still reaping benefit of his participation,OBJ,IBB,Danjuma,Gowon etc...

Many People have evidence that Gen Ironsi was Part of the Jan 1966 Coup

That said Muritala Mohammed was also part of the July 1966 Coup but it was not Muritala that started the Coup Crisis

Gen Ironsi was the head of the Army and was responsible for Providing Security for those murdered by his Army boys

For example Brigadier Ademulegun's Security details were secretly changed in the Middle of the night without his knowledge

Only Gen Ironsi was Authorised to do that
That was the very honest bitter Truth.

Secondly Azikiwe went Abroad because he knew of the planned Coup
The British intelligence contacted Dr Azikiwe’s Doctors in the UK who confirmed there was
nothing wrong with Azikiwe and he was healthy enough to return to Nigeria, for the

Commonwealth Conference

After the Coup Azikiwe sent Gen Ironsi a Telegram from the British Colonial Office addressing Gen Ironsi as the Ruler of the Country before Ironsi had even taken over Power
It was after the Telegram was sent that the British Colonial Office corrected Azikiwe that Dipcherima from Borno was the head of the Rump Cabinet of Ministers and not Gen Ironsi

Thirdly after the Prime Minister was Kidnapped and Several People Killed Alhaji Ahmed Kurfi Went to the State House to see Gen Ironsi about the Missing Prime Minister
and found him at a meeting with Ifeajuna who had just killed Brigadier Maimailari and Prime Minister Balewa Present

Fourthly the Police had warned Gen Ironsi 2 weeks before about the Coup and had asked Gen Ironsi to arrest the officers planning the Coup because the police were not authorized to do so

Gen Ironsi took no action and it Later turned out that the 5 names given to Gen Ironsi including Ifeajuna Nzeogeu , Onwategwu were the core coup plotters

The Problem is that the North believes Gen Ironsi had a hand in the Murder of their Leaders because he took no action to save their lives when abundant evidence of a planned coup was presented to him

Talk to your councillors, local government chairmen, assembly men, house of representatives members, senators, ministers and governors so they can pass a law approving this for all coupists including the perpetrators of the January 1966 coup who started it all....

Thanks for this historical insights. You should open a thread about this ,you know....because it was obvious the Ibo high elite were all in the know and behind the events of January 1966 but the Ibo propagandists always try to paint a picture of an all inclusive Coup because of the mischievous inclusion of Major Ademoyega who obviously did not recognise himself as a puppet in the hands of the Ibos like Ifeajuna and Nzeogwu.

This your version is high speculation with not a single evidence and a very pathetic attempt to justify atrocities...

The funny thing is the man who led the coup was Nzeogwu Chukwuma, when he died he was buried in Kaduna with military honours by Northern soldiers and his burial was fully supported by Murtala Mohammed... this is a historical fact...

The very people claiming to fight for revenge actually honoured the man who started the whole thing.

The Evidence is even abundant
It is Propaganda that the evidence is speculation

Go and read the British Declassified Intelligence Files

Do you know that Gen Ironsi gave Major David Ejoor deputy at the Enugu Battalion orders to take over the Battalion because David Ejoor would not be returning to his post as it's commander?

It was only later in the morning that Gen Ironsi discovered that Ejoor was still alive only because he had slept in a different Hotel room from the one the Army had booked him in that same hotel

When Ejoor went to check his previous hotel room later it was Riddled with Bullets

The Coup plotters thought they had killed David Ejoor meanwhile he was fast asleep in a different Hotel room

Gen Ironsi was drinking Tea and Biscuits when major Ejoor walked into his office unscathed
Gen Ironsi couldn't conceal his shock on seeing him

I haven't seen or heard any proof of the alleged interview until today - can you produce another site?

Why on earth will Aguiyi Ironsi make David Ejoor commander of Mid-west region?

Why would he make Murtala Mohammed Chief of Signals of the armed forces?

Why will he make Gowon Chief of Army Staff?

Why will he make TY Danjuma his personal scribe and the head of his personal guard?

Why will he station the 4th Battalion (a northern dominated army close to Lagos)...

For a tribalist who wants to kill and dominate everybody he seemed to be making the reverse steps.

Ironsi did Something O!

Of the 13 Troop Formations in Nigeria
a staggering 11 were under Eastern Region Officers

The Battalion at Ibadan had Akahan as it's GOC only because the Northern Soldiers there were enraged at having their.last 2 Northern GOCs brutally murdered and were only willing to have a Northern GOC because they had completely lost trust in the Southern Officers

Could you blame them?

If he did something he would probably be alive today and would have remove Danjuma as his chief security officer.
