In a bid to address the long-standing issue of touting and illegal activities at Nigerian airports, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has launched an armed Aviation Security unit at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

This was made known in a statement by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo on X.com on Monday.

According to the Minister of Aviation, the unit has been mandated to arrest and prosecute touts and other suspected criminals operating within the airport premises.

The Minister revealed that the initiative will be replicated at other international airports in the country, ensuring a safer and more secure environment for passengers and airport users.

The statement said, “As part of the steps we earlier promised Nigerians to take to curb the menace of touting and other illegal activities around our airports, earlier today the Managing Director of FAAN, on my behalf, unveiled the armed Aviation Security (AVSEC) unit at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

“We will replicate it at other international airports. They have the mandate to arrest and prosecute touts and other suspected criminals around our airports.

“This is apart from the other inter-ministerial effort that is still ongoing to deal specifically with the issue of agencies of government within the airports that are involved in extortion, bribery and begging.”

Keyamo had in a statement on Sunday said the issue of extortion of passengers by officials of government agencies at the nation’s airports is beyond the ministry’s control.

He however said the aviation ministry was working with other ministers responsible for the affected agencies to find a lasting solution to the problem.

The minister’s statement came in response to numerous complaints by travellers over alleged extortion by officials at the airport

Whenever we create something to tackle particular problem, that creation becomes part of that problem, worse or it becomes a new problem on its own.

We've been retrogressive for 60+ years because of the mindset of our people, until we we change this mindset there won't be any progress.

I have never seen this type of begging in my life until I came to Lagos..back then it was only people that are handicapped that beg for money but coming to Lagos was a different eye opener. People in suits, uniforms begs for money, airports, banks, church members(some of them dress neatly and come to church but will come and meet you after church for transport money to go home)...even people with cars will still beg you money. Sometimes if you don't give, it will appear you are a bad person. Someone told me yesterday that I was mocking her when she begged for 1k and I advised her to go and wash people clothes or sweep houses to get paid. I have given this woman 2k, 3k several times and she was not ready to stop until yesterday.

No day in Lagos passes without meeting people that will ask you for money. Unless you decide to stay indoor.

Solution:
Install security camera all over the place, monitor them remotely, anyone that goes against the rule will be captured and arrested immediately or later because there's evidence already. This is even more cost effective and efficient than having people wandering around the airport with arms and receiving salary.

By the honorable minister's own admission, the problem of officers engaging in "extortion, bribery and begging" at same airport is secondary. Yet, that's the major problem you should tackle because it's damaging the image of the country.

But, of course, we know why it's secondary. The bribe money that exchange hands at the airport doesn't belong to the officer collecting it alone. The ogas at the top gets their cut at the end of the day.

So dear minister, please take your time so that it won't backfire if you stop extortion, bribery and begging at the airport.
