Hello everyone,

I'm seeking your insights and experiences on behalf of someone planning a building project in the southwestern part of Nigeria. They are at the stage of deciding between a flat roof and a pitched roof.

For those who have experience with flat roofs or pitched roofs in this region, could you share your thoughts? What are the advantages and disadvantages you've encountered with each type? Which do you think is more suitable for the climate and lifestyle in southwestern Nigeria?

We are looking forward to hearing your opinions and personal experiences!

Flat roofs are becoming popular for modern buildings in Nigeria...Lekki and most new estates are going that line. They offer a sleek and contemporary look, and I learnt they are cheap to construct. Unfortunately, I heard that it requires regular maintenance to prevent water damage and is not ideal for areas with heavy rainfall...Like Western Nigeria.

An honest opinion is needed, please.

From your caption and the body of the article, I think you are just asking for a public validation. I think you are not asking for what will work for your client, rather you are asking for what the public will like about your client's house. Why? Is the client building for his personal needs or is he building to impress the public?

Well, let me share my own opinion about roofing in Nigeria. I will choose my roofing style based on my building design. The design of a building determines the roofing style that will excellently suit the building. In a place like Nigeria that does not experience snowfall, having a building design that suits flat roofing is not a bad idea.

The purpose of a building can also influence the roofing style. For someone who's parcel of land is small, choosing a flat roofing style is good so that the person can use the roof for solar panels and also for relaxation. Solar panels can be placed on a high-frame structure to form a shade over the relaxation space on the flat roof.

Apart from the fact that a flat roof does not look good on some building designs, flat roof has no environmental disadvantage in Nigeria. As a matter of fact, building modification is easier when the house has a flat roof. Cleaning the roof surface to avoid water damage is an inconsequential issue.

Not asking for public validation. Pitched roofs have been preferred in Nigeria over the years. However, modern designs have flat roofs which look cool, However, we would like to know if having a flat roof has come with some disadvantages that can't be managed. We wouldn't want to venture into a roof design and regret it later. At least, if we go ahead, let's know what we are getting ourselves into.
