This is how long it takes to pay off mortgages in the UK n the USA so there is not a single thing wrong with paying it off in 4 or more years. People pay mortgages on houses for forty years just to own it.

Now imagine paying the 1 million as rent on a house or car for over 40 years without owning it and paying exact amount for the same duration to own it ?! That is the difference btw mortgage n rent.

Nigerians would rather pay rent their livetime to keep their household wretched till eternity instead of paying off mortgages n gifting their offsprings an edge with a bulk sum in the cost of the house or a whole house for their offspring to kickstart their lives.

Seems you misunderstand me. My issue is not with taking a modgage or financing a car. It is a good thing to do that. Some of us have done that in the past when things were better.
The point is that the capacity is no longer there to pay such modgage or financing due to destroyed purchasing power.
Eg a good house in Lagos will cost you excess of 200m to buy. Due to the prevailing instability due to inflation, no bank will finance you for even 10 years. Certainly they cannot finance you in dollars, only naira. Why? Assuming a bank gave you 30m naira or $200k 10years ago to pay Eg 75k or $500 montly for a period of 24 years.
How will that modgage be serviced today when 75k is now $50? Abi will the person be expected to start paying N750k to service his house payment at today's rate? How many Nigerians that could afford 75k then now do 750k? It does not make sense.
Same applies with cars. Go on car financing sites in naija and see. Back then you could get a brand new Toyota camry for 4.5m, pay Eg 50k-80k monthly for 36-48 months.
Today a camry cost 100m. To finance it brings it to 116m for 36 months.
Omo, you will have to cough out 3.2m monthly to service the loan for 36 month!
Who can afford to pay 3.2m monthly on just motor matter in this naija?
