Napoleon55: The tactics and game play of today is far more superior than what we had in the past. And, I hope football maintains the same trajectory and the tactics of the future be far superior than what we have today. I won't feel bad about it. That is actually what I want to see. |

On the pitch, he clearly executed the role of CB as if we haven't had Libero CBs before. You are being funny saying you didn't check whoscored or whatever site and trying to make it look like "ONLY" every other person does same. What's that? Your denial that you don't check Stats sites at all? Don't lie please. Watching players on the pitch play and knowing their primary positions is one of the fine traits of a good analyst. He may show other attributes but he has a primary role. Calafiori was almost always found on the left side of his team's defensive phases and contributed also in attacking phases also from the left side predominantly. How was that hard to tell? The fact is you were wrong about his position and I knew about Calafiori enough before your comment to know he was no midfielder. I didn't need whoscored or whatever. I know lots of players/talents and watch them without even mentioning all of them. His assist against CROATIA (Not Czech republic) came from a midfield position because he drove forward from the back. Does that make him a midfielder now? So every defender who feeds an assist in an advanced area of the pitch becomes a midfielder or striker then?? I guess we can also call his Defensive Partner, Alessandro Bastoni a midfielder too for laying off similar assists with Inter in the past season in advanced positions on the pitch like the one for Di Marco vs Empoli. I don't hear Midfielder shouts for Bastoni when he also has one of the best long ball techniques in Serie A and has laid off assists in "midfielder" positions too. Get real. Marjoribanks: |

Bastoni, Stones, Ake and now Calafiori are examples of inverted CBs or Libero-like CBs who can come into midfield but no we should call them midfielders. It is funny. Great point My Top Man.π€π½π€π½π― TheGoodJoe: 1 Like |

TheSuperNerd: π My hands are clean. I only explained to him why Calafiori was in the midfield position while watching. I didn't saw we should call him midfielder. Innocent analyst like me. π Maka why did you not include Akanji in your inverted CB list? |

Meliforme: Most players don't resort to long Balls as a main skill set strategy because they have other football competencies and attributes. Anybody π¦ can play a long ball but the timing and accuracy of the long pass is the key ποΈ. Consider Trent his ability to do the long left or right foot within a mini second makes him stand out. But then it's his pin point delivery from free kicks dead balls, shirt and long passes his reading of the game through balls and crosses plus the ability to shoot and score not just long ball that makes him a top level player. Instead of us too look at better players you are mentioning Nwakali & Mathew . 1 Like 1 Share |

Kog45: I didn't notice it in the past. It is something I noticed from Pep Guardiola. What I know we had in the past were Sweeper defenders who were creative and also good with dictating play with passes like midfielders. A person that was so good at that was Matthias Sammer in his later days. Football in the past was rigid when it came to positioning. You will not find Roberto Carlos or Cafu living their roles to go to the midfield to control games. Nor Celestine or Mobi. |

komekn: Just because you saw Kelechi Nwakali's name , you jumped in to argue. Meliforme's point is so simple. Finidi used a long ball playing style of play. His game was built around the long ball. He is wondering why he did not recruit players who are the best long ball specialists in the team. Even Onyedika, who was the best among who Finidi invited when it comes to long ball was left on the bench in the start. What you posted is totally devoid of the point he made. Kog45: The inversion comes with the modern day idea of attacking the offensive area with numerous players, sometimes 6 to 7 players. This leaves a lot of room for the opposition to counter attack. Inversion creates a narrow shield to limit a center direct counter play. |

I would say Inverted CB is a manifestation firstly of the football of the past but only more refined and more in use today than before. Franz Beckenbauer was the first truly recognised Inverted CB/Libero. There may have been others before him but he was the most recognised in the 60s and 70s. He was a defender like no other and till today remains one of the greatest CBs of all time. Kog45: |

TheGoodJoe:Inversion means you get to play in an horizontal line. Kog45 is wrong. The right name is utility CB |

kennysville: Why bias? I have given clear reasons why. The intensity and work rate of Kevin De Bruyne is unparallel. Check out the amount of big chances he creates season after season. Tell me the objectivity you feel I missed. |

TheSuperNerd: Please do a research on Thiago Motta's tactics. It is mind blowing and I think Inzaghi is in for a battle. He views football instead of from one side of the post to the other, he views it from the left side of the pitch to the right. I know you will do justice to it. Calafiori is one of the beneficiaries of his idea. It is criminal for the thesis files of coaches not made public. 1 Like 1 Share |

Motta's work with Bologna obviously caught my attention. Securing UCL football with Bologna is top achievement. Juventus did well acquiring his services for the new season. Inzaghi's inter won't have it easy defending the scudetto surely provided Juventus gives Motta the support he deserves. TheGoodJoe: 1 Like 1 Share |
