Why Was The 1966 Coup Tagged Igbo Coup? by OredoPikin: 7:10am On Jun 29 |
The 1966 coup in Nigeria was led by a delta man, born and brought up in kaduna. Why still tag it igbo coup instead of South south coup or delta coup? Is there a collective agenda to paint the igbo tribe bad? 1 Like |

Because leaders from other regions were killed except the Igbo leaders. And eventually after the coup, it was an Igbo man , Aguiyi Ironsi who benefited from the coup. So it's Igbo's coup It be like some of una missed history class in secondary school 52 Likes 4 Shares |

helinues:At the time the coup happened, the Eastern region was easily the most peaceful region, and there was no good reason to kill anybody from the east. That coup happened basically because of the crisis in the south western region caused by the Awolowo and Akintola politics, and the seemingly biased actions of Balewa who favoured Akintola and had Awolowo imprisoned, who was loved by the majority. Those soldiers were sympathetic to Awolowo. 9 Likes 4 Shares |

helinues: This is not true. The military at the time, just like every other sector had a predominance of igbos. A yoruba man ademoyega was also involved. The plan was to get rid of the corrupt civilian leadership at the time. They started executions from the west and north and had plans to eliminate the igbo leaders at the time but the coup was foiled before they could get to the East. Go and read "why we struck" by adewale ademoyega. Please note that nzeogwu was delta igbo but grew up in the North and spoke hausa fluently. He was igbo in name. That coup was not intended to entrench igbo dominance. We keep talking about the coup but forget the chaos that led to it. Awolowo in his tribalistic nature caused the events that led to that coup. Please go and read and stop constituting nuisance here on nairaland 4 Likes 3 Shares |

Masterminds of the 1966 coup: Emmanuel Ifeajuna, Timothy Onwuatuegwu, Chris Anuforo, Don Okafor, Humphrey Chukwuka, and Adewale Ademoyega These guys were Majors (in rank) in the Nigerian Army at the time. They invariably had to involve senior officer(s) - Kaduna Nzeogwu, who was Lieutenant Colonel. On realisation that the coup had failed, Ifeajuna escaped into Ghana dressed as a woman and only returned to fight with the Biafran army (before ultimately, his principal also followed suit), while Nzeogwu Kaduna was apprehended. This is just to clear the erroneous assumption that Lt Colonel Kaduna Nzeogwu was the mastermind behind the coup. Major Adewale Ademoyega who was one of the masterminds was not Igbo, so calling it an Igbo coup based on participants was very unlikely. Besides many lower-ranking personnel across the Country partook in the operations aspect of the coup. It appears there was some level of sabotage of the coup itself by partakers as leaders in other regions were eliminated while those of Igbo stock seemed to have been led to escape or were coincidentally nowhere to be seen. That is where the perception of an 'Igbo coup' began to grow. Also, with sequence of events after the coup - political and social, this perception grew stronger. |

helinues: Same happened with Murtala Mohammeds coup, but it was never tagged "Hausa Coup" They even put Murtala on the N20 note, named buildings and Airports after him, just for being a successful coup plotter 1 Like 1 Share |

helinues: I'm asking a question Why is that coup the only one that has ethnic tag? But Murtala Mohammeds coup that even killed your Military Governor of the Western Region, Lt Colonel Fajuyi and other leaders from other parts of the country, was not called "Hausa coup" Rather, Murtala Mohammed was honoured on the N20 note, had Airports and Highways named after him, just for being a murderous coup plotter One rule for the North and another for the East? 2 Likes 1 Share |

helinues: No point creating another thread, everyone knows it's always one rule for the North and another for the East. That's why Murtala can be on the N20 note but Nzeogwu can never be there even though both men did the same thing One of the hypocrisy of the Nigerian State 2 Likes 1 Share |

OredoPikin: so for the sake of hoping people you don't know like you, you've decided to paint a full blooded fully aware Igbo man as a lesser igbo man. Nzeogwu is 600% an igbo man and if he leads a coup, it's an igbo coup. Something he's not ashamed of, you want to feel shame on his behalf. Shut up. Start your own igbo coup aturu. You think you're the normal one and he was abnormal? 2 Likes |
