A country with an economy that was dependent on agriculture before the oil boom??

^^^
A 'dependency' on agriculture doesn't necessarily imply fertile or productive soils.

olisaEze:
A simple test of soil fertility is the presence of earthworms. Where in Nigeria is this organism not found??

^^^
undecided

There is more to soil fertility or soil productivity than the presence of earthworms.
Do you have data for the concentration or distribution of earthworms across Nigerian soils?

Very funny sets of criminal-some entities.
Nigeria with an average crude oil production of 1,300,000 barrels per day,and at a price of about $89 per barrel, by 364 days a year,is making nothing less than $42 billion per year(excluding royalties).
FIRS is now saying that non oil revenue is now more than 50% of what's shared at FAAC.
Going by those data,Nigeria makes nothing less than $100 billion per year even with the level of corruption in the oil and revenue sector, mostly as a result of under disclosure and under remittances by the collection agencies.
These people just amazed me with their caricature submission.
They just want to increase tax again even with the biting economic hardship.
They are taking the masses for granted, what's happening in Kenya is a child's play the day the masses will wakeup.
There's hope for Nigerian brother. Let's believe

The general point you (and others) are making is valid and duly noted. But there are some assertions commonly made about this country that are inaccurate, to put it mildly.

In reality, most of Nigeria's soil is low fertility or low productivity soil. Over 60% of the country's soils fall into the very low productivity to low productivity brackets. All the talk about Nigeria's fertile land is to put it bluntly, a myth.

Nigeria's weather is also...not quite perfect. It varies widely (from the hot, highly humid weather of most of Southern Nigeria) to the very hot, relatively lower humidity of large parts of Northern Nigeria. The high humidity and searing heat do eventually take their toll on people, livestock and even machines.

Nothing like low quality soil that cannot be condition to suit crops needs, dnt we have abundant professors, doctors of soil science in Nigeria again.israel is turning arid desert soil into fertile lands.we dwell too much on problems instead of finding solutions.

Totally different topic.

Before the current monsters got in power what stopped the previous monsters from building the needed infrastructure? Obasanjo’s 8 years saw $16b wasted on a project to solve our power problem but nothing to show. They are all the same, most of them just changed parties.

The current monsters criticized the older monsters so I expected them to do the right thing at least. Did OBJ demonise any govt before getting power in 1999? Whereas the current monster did. They promised better exchange rates but what is the reality today?
I am not into partisan bullshit, fyi.

The first order of business is to get the diagnostics right.

Denial is always an option. You mention Israel...well the Israelis could just as easily have claimed their soil isn't arid (despite clear evidence most of it is) and they could have chosen a different path...and the possible outcomes are anyone's guess.

Nobody is 'dwelling too much on problems'. My point clearly flew over your head.

Politicians have been looting the country since day one,and you want us to believe we are poor.you thieves looted the country dry.
If other countries politicians loot their countries wealth the way Nigeria politicians does to ours that country won’t survive the next day.our major problem is bad governance and leadership.
Re: Nigeria A Poor Country – Presidential Committee by benjaminlawson(m): 1:37pm On Jun 29
Mr. Tax reformer, let it be known to you that Nigeria is not poor, our poverty is man made, particularly this useless party that is ruling us now. Our poverty was as a result of you politicians and top civil servants who have taken our resources as personal income and enterprise, that when money is generated by income generating agencies, they pay whatever they like into government purse as NNPCL always did, they will deduct all abnormal deductions. Then when the little they send to federation account reach there, 60% of it will be embezzled by politicians and civil servants, the remaining will be spent on frivolous expenditure like, construction a building at 21 billion naira for VP, buying yacht for billions, buying suvs for each national assembly members, taking thousand of people to the so called conference, which the attendees did not understand why they were there, buying jets, subsidies hajj operation of few individual at billions and above all, contract inflation. All this is what make us poor, which is deliberately induced by the wicked leaders so that they can control our thought.

I can't but agree with you. Yesterday, I saw on a friend Status, one of the house representative member declaring how much he gets every month...I think the man is from the South West by his accent and I don't know the actual reason why he was declaring what he collects monthly right inside the assembly.....below is the list....salary 2.5M monthly, Wardrobe: 7.5M monthly, Newspaper: 1.2M, 7.9M Furniture monthly,621k, 248k, 828k, 631k...PA allowance....I got so sad and couldn't continue listing what the money was meant for again.....but all added together was in the range of 27M Naira monthly..

olisaEze:
This is a very big fat lie that is recently being propagated by the poor excuses we have for political elites. Nigeria is not a poor country by any means. A country with large commercial quantities of gas reserves, crude oil, coal, gold, natural resources & mineral deposits, large tracts of very fertile arable lands, perfect weather and abundant human capital, can only be poor by choice and not by fate. Even with our humongous debts, this country still has the economic potential to pull at least 5 million people out of poverty each year. The combined wealth of Nigeria’s five richest men - $29.9 billion - could end extreme poverty at a national level yet 5 million face hunger. More than 112 million people are living in poverty in Nigeria, yet the country’s richest man would have to spend $1 million a day for 42 years to exhaust his fortune. And all this money was made off the Nigerian economy! Poverty and inequality in Nigeria are not due to a lack of resources, but to the ill-use, misallocation and misappropriation of resources. At the root is a culture of corruption combined with a political elite out of touch with the daily struggles of average Nigerians. They want you to believe Nigeria is a poor country, yet our lowest politicians earn far above presidents of richer nations! Ndi ala!!! cool

“That $30 billion is even less than the budget of Kenya which is around $32 billion. It is barely a quarter of South Africa’s budget at $130 billion. And of course, it’s even less than the budget of New York City, not even just New York State. So, clearly, Nigeria is a poor country with the potential to be a wealthy country.” ------Minister.

Potential to become a rich country is on when income from crude oyel wells discovered in the north by Buhari government starts to pour in.
