The intelligence quotient of a people is a measure of their productivity.

The quality of our Education is drastically reducing, and this has affected our development as a people.

Intelligent quotient is different from education.

One can have a high IQ without education.

Also, formal education is different from informal education.

Maybe you should specify exactly what you mean!

Any Country where the biggest business is politics would suffer what we are suffering..

Politicians have only one work.. consume, and our own people do it greedily.

The type of education we have encourages memorization and not problem solving.

I see my co workers use theories of decades ago and fail because they are not open minded.

Funny enough, they will pass exams but wont be able to solve life problems.

Lolz, dey play. Education is not the reason we are underdeveloped but our cultures and traditions. Do I even need to mention numerous highly educated people in the public services that are hopelessly corrupt. These are professionals who earned their degrees in both Nigeria and first grade universities abroad.

The reality is that, black man cultures, particularly ours in Nigeria are exploitative and domineering ones. Every single soul in Nigeria are out there to oppress and make the other ones worship and beg for crumbs. You can take anything out of a black man but you can never take this innate attitude out of him.

In summary, everyone want to be king in order for others to worship, and the only way to achieve this is by holding an economic power and denied others the privilege to be like him. I am so sorry to say, we are not different from the same leaders we are blaming today. It is not our fault, but what we are by nature.

Although you made some valid point but I'll not entirely agree with you. Are you saying over 200million people will behave and act the same way? Definitely not!
In as much as I've seen most of everything you highlighted in so many individuals but at the same time in this same country, I've seen people that are completely selfless and want the best for other people as much as the want for themselves, I believe I'm one of such people. What this means is that, we definitely still have people who can get to power and make serious change. Forget the numerous educated people that are highly corrupt, all of that can be easily dealt with by having the right people in power.

Now i must say i do agree with the OP to a great extent. Our education system shouldn't even be called an education system in the first place, there's nothing being taught in our schools that can drive development of a nation in any way, I believe we both can both agree to this.
A nation's development and progress hinge on a multifaceted approach where education plays a pivotal role. While intelligence contributes to productivity, it is not the sole determinant. The interplay of quality education, socio-economic conditions, infrastructure, technology, cultural practices, and collaborative efforts creates a conducive environment for sustainable development. By focusing on these areas, a nation can unlock the full potential of its people and achieve significant advancements.

In conclusion and to address the topic from my own viewpoint, I believe both the government and the people play crucial roles in developing a nation. The government creates policies that shape the economy, education, healthcare, infrastructure and others. It allocates resources and funds projects that support national development, and provides legal frameworks and ensures stability, which are essential for growth. On the other hand, individuals drive innovation and start businesses that contribute to economic growth. The people's skills and labor are vital for implementing development projects, and active participation by citizens in democratic processes holds the government accountable and drives social progress. A nation develops effectively when both the government and the people work together towards common goals.

All of these can be achieved when a significant number of individuals with high intelligence quotient are present among both the citizens and the government. Sadly this is something missing in our dear nation.

Now, this is a another significant issue because many people misunderstand what true development entails, which is why we often praise governments for achieving only the bare minimum.

Got your point sir, and yes I agreed, but before I proceeded, what is your own definition of education?

I will repeat again, education is the key to nation building and development but doesn't take away cultural value in people. If western education change people, Chinese, Indians, Arabs and many countriess would've totally embraced western culture and value as well. Though Nigerians and majority of blacks embrace it but that doesn't change the core cultural value in us.

You can't develop a nation withiout taking humans factor into consideration. The extent of nation building and development depends entirely on her value system and tradition. Development is inherent cultural value, not what you learn from modern education. And contrary to your opinion, there is no difference between the government and the masses because the said government or leaders are formed or emanated from the same masses. If masses are ignorant of their value system, then there is probability that the government is not any better. Besides, people in this part of the world can only be selfless when their peace, finance and influence are not being threatened. Give this same people power and privilege and see true African culture in them.

If you read wide from socrates, plato, arististotle, Thomas hobbies, down to Karl max, Lenin , etc, you will discover that what we called education today is perceived western cultural value and civilization. That says, we can't use the same education and value system as template for other societies with complete different set of people with value system, ideology and traditions.

What is yours?

It is simply a transmission of knowledge, skills, and character traits. Nothing more, nothing less. Though could be formal or informal.

Education doesn't necessarily ensure freedom from mediocrity, intelligent or humane.

Freedom from mediocrity - That is not always the case, we have many articians who are very much better than our engineers. Farmers in the villages are much more better than majority of our graduates. The real education happened within practical espect of industry and not obsolete material being repeated severally for decades in our universities. That is why the country can't move forward, we depends so much on formal borrowed education, while our core value and antecedents practices keep deteriorate.

Intelligent; I don't know what you mean by this because it has been proving times without numbers that not all educated people are intelligent, and not all illiterates are dull.

Inhumane: This one is not even tally, as humanity has nothing to do with education. Alot of highly educated people ranging from colonial era has been found guilty of war crime and genocides.

Re: Why Nigeria Is Underdeveloped? by Mrlola: 2:15pm On Jun 29
We are underdeveloped because the British left us with a bad educational system. Our educational system was originally designed to help the British perpetuate resources exploitation from the colonies. When you get over to the UK Canada, and the states, you realize that a good portion of their citizens learned trades like plumbing, welding, and others. Things that actually actively improve their societies. In Africa and other colonies, our education stops at being able to read and write, do mathematics without knowing the application. At the end of the day, we just know how to engage in a service economy. This is why most of our "graduates" do not contribute productively to the economy. Nigeria has about 95% of its educated citizens who do not contribute meaningfully to economic development because of defective educational system. Unfortunately, this trend has continued because we don't have a functional system capable of doing an impartial assessment.

In conclusion, they are not educated.

Education makes you a problem solver.

Every good thing is a product of good. Intelligence is good and it has produce good things.
Right here is the difference between IQ and education.

Education is the solid amount of information and facts you know, from the Numbers and letters you learn in nursery school to the advanced theories you learn and memorize in Uni.

IQ is your capability to apply your knowledge and reasoning to create something new or solve a problem.

IQ is like the raw cognitive potential someone has, and unfortunately this is not something that's equal among everyone.
There's evidence suggesting environmental factors and (this is still a subject of dispute) genetic factors does stunt people's IQ.
Education alone will not improve someone's IQ.
Things that can stunt brain development and tank a person's or community's IQ are:
Being abused as a child.
Malnutrition.
Starvation.
Lack of access to good healthcare.
Exposure to toxins, like lead. etc.

With this you end up getting stunted people in your society, that are superstitious, impulsive, short sighted, and/or violent. Education can only have a minor effect on changing this, without the underlying issues being addressed.
