In line with the Electricity Act 2023, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, issued an order transferring regulatory oversight of the electricity market in Imo to the Imo State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

This was contained in a recent order signed by NERC Chairman Sanusi Garba.

The order shall take effect on July 1, 2024.

The implication is that Imo State will be responsible for the complete regulation of its electricity market.

The order stated: “Section 230 (3) of the Act mandates the commission to develop a transition plan and timeline for the transfer of regulatory oversight of the intrastate electricity market from NERC to ISERC upon receipt of formal notification from the State

“EEDC shall complete the incorporation of EEDC SubCo within 60 days from the effective date of this Order and, EEDC SubCo shall apply for and obtain a licence for the intrastate supply and distribution of electricity from ISERC.

“EEDC shall identify the actual geographic boundaries of Imo State and carve out its network in Imo State as a standalone network with the installation of boundary meters at all border points where the network crosses from Imo State into another state.”

With the development, Imo becomes the fourth state to get electricity regulatory authority after Enugu, Ondo and Ekiti states.

Apparently, Hope Uzodinma just woke up from his 4-year slumber after wasting his first tenure in office. Dude is going all over the state starting new projects he will eventually abandon.

To give him a benefit of the doubt, let's see how far he can go with his resolve to use natural gas to power Imo State and its neighbouring states.

First Ekiti, now Imo state. Other states should wake up.

Nice one!

Imo State has huge gas reserves; one of the biggest in the country. Last month, Tinubu commissioned two gas projects in Imo State. In short, Shell is currently building a gas plant similar to NLNG in the state.

Hope Uzodinma has engaged an Egyptian power company that will supply 24/7 power to the state and its neighbours through a PPP arrangement. The source of energy is natural gas. What this news is now saying is that the federal power regulatory agency, NERC, has given Imo State government the approval to start generating, transmitting and distributing its own power.

I hope this helps...

Ebonyi should do same please. This will develop and attract industrial-level investments into the state.

We may not have the oil and gas, but we have the will-power to develope our state.

Imolites will never praise this man just because he is from APC!

They say they didn't vote him in so who voted him in?

Who voted Obi in in Imo?

Why the difference?

They believe anything APC is evil but even the Abia LP governor and Obi's VP candidate were formerly from APC.

The man's name don enter record now!

National grid and state grid will work together until the federal government decides on what to do with its own grid (national grid).

A welcome development. Imo state cannot be sitting on huge gas reserves and still can't access 24hrs light. I hope the state government utilizes this great opportunity by partnering with investors and other electricity regulatory firms across borders to improve electricity generation and distribution in the state. If done properly, I foresee industrial boom in Imo state and neighbouring states in the South-East and South-South.

Lastly, let me commend Hope Uzodinma for this great initiative and past Governors like Udenwa, Ohakim, Rochas and Ihedioha that fought for the gas master plan in Imo, the result we see today from the Shell Gas Plant, Egbema IPP, and the Walter Smith Modular Refinery being built.

This is good news for Imolites. Let's Light Up IMO, we can do it. Lack of power supply has been a major nightmare to the development and industrialization of this country 🇳🇬. Once that is tackled, Nigeria is good to go and say final bye-bye to "Generator country".

Gov. Hope, at least for this one... well-done.👏

This is 100% true, but he didn't do anything significant in 4 years. Most governors work in their first tenure and use the second tenure to complete their ongoing projects.

Gov. Hope, to a reasonable extent has surprised me. Imolites now know Rochas was a complete fraud. I now believe Gov Hope will make a lot of impact on the lives and general wellbeing of the state

The only solution to Nigeria power problem is to unbundle the complicated national grid supply. I like the way the SE is taking the lead in this. It's only a matter of time then the result will begin to show. There's no way investors won't want to come to the region when there's stable power supply.

I pray the FG release MNK for peace to return to the SE. Once that is done, there will be a total clamp down on criminal elements parading as supporters of MNK right now.
